religions Article Spiritual Ecology: On the Way to Ecological Existentialism Sam Mickey Theology and Religious Studies, University of San Francisco, San Francisco, CA 94117, USA; [email protected] Received: 17 September 2020; Accepted: 29 October 2020; Published: 4 November 2020 Abstract: Spiritual ecology is closely related to inquiries into religion and ecology, religion and nature, and religious environmentalism. This article presents considerations of the unique possibilities afforded by the idea of spiritual ecology. On one hand, these possibilities include problematic tendencies in some strands of contemporary spirituality, including anti-intellectualism, a lack of sociopolitical engagement, and complicity in a sense of happiness that is captured by capitalist enclosures and consumerist desires. On the other hand, spiritual ecology promises to involve an existential commitment to solidarity with nonhumans, and it gestures toward ways of knowing and interacting that are more inclusive than what is typically conveyed by the term “religion.” Much work on spiritual ecology is broadly pluralistic, leaving open the question of how to discern the difference between better and worse forms of spiritual ecology. This article affirms that pluralism while also distinguishing between the anti-intellectual, individualistic, and capitalistic possibilities of spiritual ecology from varieties of spiritual ecology that are on the way to what can be described as ecological existentialism or coexistentialism. The framework of the research is Crosby’s theory about nihilism. The study is based on a quantitative approach and employs a survey method so as to collect the required data. Statistical population of the study is the whole Students of Shiraz University that according to the formal statistics consists of 20000 students. 400 students are selected by multistage sampling method. The results show that there is a significant relationship between the independent variables of gender, adherences to religious practices, fatalism, fear of failure, need for achievement and the dependent variable nihilism. Stepwise regression method used to predict the dependent variable. Ordinarily, five variables of fatalism, fear of failure, Adherences to religious practices, gender and need for achievement could predict 33% of dependent variable (R2=0.338) Key Words: Nihilism, Sociology, University Students, Shiraz University, Iran Introduction Undoubtedly, the most fundamental question that every human being faces with, is about the purpose of life. French Existentialism is often condemned for its perceived quietist implications. However, closer analysis reveals a preoccupation with philosophy in the former and with art in the latter. Neither was nonsensical or meaningless, but both reveal a rich individualist ethics aimed at the amelioration of the individual and society. It is through their combined analysis that we can view and productively utilise their alignment. Offering new critical aesthetic and philosophical approaches to Dada as a quintessential part of the European Avant-Garde, this thesis performs a reassessment of the movement as a form of (proto-)Existentialist philosophy. The thesis represents the first major comparative study of Dada and Existentialism, contributing a new perspective on Dada as a movement, a historical legacy, and a philosophical field of study. -

Running head: BRAINS, BELIEFS, AND EXISTENTIALISM Brains, Beliefs, and Existentialism: Philosophies and Treatments Pertaining to Three Approaches to Social Anxiety Disorder, and the Prospect of a New Mental Health Paradigm Jason Campbell Advised by Michael J. Crowley, Ph.D. Yale University April 20, 2018 BRAINS, BELIEFS, AND EXISTENTIALISM 1 Introduction This paper provides a brief overview of social anxiety disorder, and outlines three approaches discernible in the scientific literature to understanding the etiology and maintenance of social anxiety disorder. The connection of each of these approaches to a certain type of treatment is discussed, as well the philosophical assumptions supporting each of these approaches. These three approaches are then comparatively assessed in terms of their suitability for explaining the etiology and maintenance of social anxiety disorder, with an emphasis on the relationship between dynamics at distinct levels of abstraction. The shortcomings of the current DSM paradigm of mental illness are explored, and how improvements thereof may be related to the development of a more robust understanding of the mechanisms of mindfulness-based interventions. This paper concludes with a brief discussion of the potential value of existential philosophy in grounding and guiding the project of developing a new conceptual framework for mental health and illness that is less susceptible to the criticisms of the current DSM framework, and which can satisfyingly account for the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions for a wide range of psychiatric disorders. Social anxiety disorder Social anxiety disorder (SAD), alternatively referred to as social phobia, is an anxiety disorder that pertains specifically to social situations. SAD affects approximately seven percent of Americans annually (American Psychiatric Association, 2013), and has a lifetime prevalence of approximately twelve percent (Kessler et al., 2005). -

Levit L. Z., Ph. D. The Centre for Psychological Health and Education, Minsk, Belarus Abstract. The article under consideration deals with the theoretical analysis and the practical research of the ratio between the two notions: egoism and altruism. The author shows the inadequacy of the one-sided, morally loaded interpretations of both terms. The scores of two ESM-investigations mostly show the positive correlation between the “egoism” and the “altruism” scales in a person’s everyday activity. The results obtained give the opportunity to replace the inadequate view on egoism and altruism as opposites by a more appropriate metaphor of the older and the younger brother. Such an approach removes the idea of antagonism which is usually ascribed to the egoism-altruism interrelation. In the years 2006 – 2012 the author (Leonid Levit) elaborated a synthesizing conception of self-realization and happiness, which is based on the ideas of the systemic approach and combines biological, psychological, social and spiritual (the highest) levels of individual life and activity. The results of our seven-year work on the problem are summarized in five monographs (Levit, 2010; 2011a; 2011c; 2012 a; 2013 c) and articles (Levit, 2009; 2011 b, 2012 b, 2012 c; 2013 a; 2013 b; 2013 e; Levit, Radchikova, 2012 a). -

DEONTOLOGICAL ETHICS “FROM THE CROOKED TIMBER OF HUMANITY, NOTHING WHOLLY STRAIGHT CAN BE MADE.” – Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) [47] DUTY AND THE GOOD WILL Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) wrote prolifically on a wide range of subjects, most fa- mously on epistemology and the limits of human reason in his Critique of Pure Reason (1781). But he is also well known for his moral philosophy, and here he wants to ex- plain the feeling that many of us have that certain actions are required or prohibited of us absolutely, unconditionally, without exception. For instance, many people feel that they are absolutely prohibited from torturing or killing innocent human beings no matter what, even if the whole world depended upon it. Now, what could be the source of such an unyielding sense of obligation? It does not appear to be our desire for some consequence of our action or omission, for we find the action or omission to be right or wrong in itself, independent of the consequences. I simply see that it is wrong to take innocent life, and I avoid it not because I fear going to jail, nor because I fear public criticism, nor because I am merely disinclined to kill the innocent, but because it is morally wrong. One might think this obligation is nothing more than a strong, emotion-laden inclination resulting from previous conditioning and perhaps our biological nature. But Kant suggests it has instead to do with the nature of reason itself, that reason is the source of this obligation and feeling of duty. Kant discovers in our reason a moral principle called the Categorical Imperative, which he uses to discover more specific, lower-level moral laws or duties (also called “categorical imperatives” or “moral imperatives” or “impera- tives of duty”), and it becomes our self-imposed duty to follow these moral laws. -
Classical Ethics in A/IS
The IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems Classical Ethics in A/IS We applied classical ethics methodologies to considerations of algorithmic design in autonomous and intelligent systems (A/IS) where machine learning may or may not reflect ethical outcomes that mimic human decision-making. To meet this goal, we drew from classical ethics theories and the disciplines of machine ethics, information ethics, and technology ethics. As direct control over tools becomes further removed, creators of autonomous systems must ask themselves how cultural and ethical presumptions bias artificially intelligent creations. Such introspection is more necessary than ever because the precise and deliberate design of algorithms in self-sustained digital systems will result in responses based on such design. By drawing from over two thousand years’ worth of classical ethics traditions, we explore established ethics systems, including both philosophical traditions (utilitarianism, virtue ethics, and deontological ethics) and religious and culture-based ethical systems (Buddhism, Confucianism, African Ubuntu traditions, and Japanese Shinto) and their stance on human morality in the digital age.1 In doing so, we critique assumptions around concepts such as good and evil, right and wrong, virtue and vice, and we attempt to carry these inquiries into artificial systems’ decision-making processes. Through reviewing the philosophical foundations that define autonomy and ontology, we address the potential for autonomous capacity of artificially intelligent systems, posing questions of morality in amoral systems and asking whether decisions made by amoral systems can have moral consequences. Ultimately, we address notions of responsibility and accountability for the decisions made by autonomous systems and other artificially intelligent technologies. -
