  • The Best of the Georgian Caucasus July 19 – 31, 2020 (13 Days)
The Best of the Georgian Caucasus July 19 – 31, 2020 (13 days) The Caucasus, one of the world’s extraordinary mountain domains, is the setting for our hiking trip that explores two distinctly different mountain regions of Georgia: dramatic Khevsureti and the even more remote mountain valleys of Tusheti, a hidden “Shangri-La” defended by ancient stone towers, reminders of the not-so-distant past. Still largely untouched, Tusheti is a magnet for those seeking a mosaic of fascinating cultures and superb scenery. For centuries, these areas have been home to venerable mountain clans whose traditions include extending a rich hospitality to visitors (in fact, their hospitality borders on the compulsive—be prepared to accept profuse offerings of food and wine!). Our trek takes us from one historical village to the next, with a chance to meet local people, hear their haunting melodies, listen to poetry, and sleep under the starry sky or stay with them in their traditional homes. Our trip ends in the lowlands of Khakheti province, famed as the birthplace of winemaking. TRIP DETAILS Moderate to Strenuous6 days moderate to strenuous hiking at medium elevation (maximum 11,254 feet); 3 nights hotels, 5 nights guesthouses, 4 nights camping ITINERARY (You will need to leave the U.S. on July 18, in order to arrive in Tbilisi on July 19.) Day 1, July 19 Tbilisi, Georgia Arrive early morning in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. You will be met outside of customs by a Cattara representative and transferred to your hotel, located in the old part of town.

Connecting Tusheti The Impact of Community Networking in Europe’s Highest Settlements Connecting This report was prepared by Nino Nanitashvili (independent consultant) and edited by Mike Jensen (Association for Progressive Communications) on behalf of Internet Society. It was made possible through the advisory and logistical support of Maarit Palovirta and Jane Coffin (Internet Society); Irakli(Rati) Kochlamazashvili, Natia Gogotidze and Zurab Babulaidze (Tusheti Development Fund); Ucha Seturi (Small and Medium Telecom Operators Association of Georgia (TOA)), and Nicola Bidwell (Association for Progressive Communications). The photos included in the report were taken by Jake Borden in Tusheti, during August 2018. © Internet Society | Jake Borden Photography Connecting Tusheti The Impact of Community Networking in Europe’s Highest Settlements Dec 2 2018 Connecting Tusheti Introduction Tusheti is one of the highest and most isolated settlements in Europe — an ecologically unspoiled community of historical and cultural significance in the Greater Caucasus Mountains of Georgia. The area’s sparse population and rugged topography has meant that it has been left unconnected by commercial operators for both Internet and often mobile voice services. To help address the isolation of the area, an independent locally operated wireless Internet service was set up in August 2017 with in-kind support from members of the community, the Georgian Telecom Operators Association, the ISOC Georgia Chapter and other local stakeholders as well as financial support from Internet Society (ISOC). A year later, the Internet service continues to operate and has already provided a variety of benefits to Tusheti’s residents and visitors, particularly in the hospitality sector. These and other impacts and outcomes are described below in more detail in this status report which examines how access to the Internet in remote and rural areas such as Tusheti can help to foster social and economic development.

Enhancing water supply system for village Omalo and arrangement of sewage system for hotel Samzeo in Omalo, Akhmeta Municipality, Tusheti (Public Private Partnership) Environmental Review WORLD BANK FINANCED REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROJECT Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Tbilisi, Georgia Last updated -2018 Environmental and Social Screening and Classification This Sub-project (SP) is part of Public-Private Infrastructure (PPI) Investment Program and is delivered in support to Samzeo Ltd. Samzeo is a boutique hotel with over 20 rooms located in the heart of the Omalo village, which is 200 km away from Tbilisi International Airport. Village Omalo belongs to the Tusheti historical Region. According to territorial zoning, it belongs to Akhmeta Municipality. Omalo is a high- mountain (within the range of 1880-2000 meters altitude above the sea level) touristic center. In the summertime, Omalo is visited by quite a lot of tourists. As of the year 2015 statistics, approximate number of Omalo inhabitants was up to 25 in winter period increasing up to 500 inhabitants for summer season, apart from that tourists amounted up to 25,000 including foreign and local visitors. Due to its location and multitude of historical monuments, Omalo has a considerable potential in terms of its formation and development as a touristic and recreational area, therefore the population has constructed private hotels with well-furnished hotel rooms. Private investors are also interested to further promote development of tourist infrastructure, which will be beneficial and accessible to tourists. However, the above- mentioned activities are to certain extent hampered by poor transport conditions and lack of local utility networks.

Introduction and Context Public Disclosure Authorized Country Context Following four years of rapid growth, backed by far-reaching reforms and strong FDI inflows, Georgia experienced a sharp economic downturn resulting from the August 2008 conflict and the global financial crisis. Economic recovery is underway, with growth of an estimated 6.3 percent in 2010. The authorities responded to the downturn with a countercyclical fiscal stimulus coupled with a marked reallocation of public expenditures toward social and infrastructure investments. As economic recovery takes hold, driven by higher exports and private investment, the authorities are winding down the stimulus and implementing fiscal adjustment to safeguard sustainability. There is, however, uncertainty regarding the pace of economic recovery. Georgia will need to refinance a public debt amortization spike in 2013. The authorities are addressing these vulnerabilities through well designed fiscal, monetary and debt management policies. Infrastructure projects are considered by the Government as part of the physical stimulus package.

In Chiglaurta, which is the starting point for most of our tours, we will stay in his house- don’t expect comfort, the village has no electricity! But the view from the balcony is worth it. You can see the mountain ranges, which separate Tusheti from Daghestan and Chechnya, with some 4 to 5 thousand metre peaks. After loading the packhorses we will hike from Chiglaurta to Omalo via Khakhabo. Traditional lunch in Upper Omalo. You will have the possibility to visit the medieval fortress of Keselo in Omalo. Traditionally Tush people abandoned their villages and used towers as temporary shelters during raids on their villages. Keselo was constructed during the Mongol invasion of Georgia in 1230. It originally had 13 towers. There were only ruins left until 2003 when restorations commenced. We continue our way to the crossroads for the Pirikiti and Gometsari valleys.
