Jakob Maarten van Bemmelen was born on November 3, 1830 in Amelo where his father Jan Frans van Bemmelen was headmaster of the grammar school. His mother was Antoinetta Adriana de Kempenaer. His father died in the same year (December 26, 1830) and his family moved to Leiden. On September 13, 1847 he matricultated there as a student. He studied inorganic- and organic chemistry also pharmacy under Professor Antonius Henrik van der Boon Mesch (15.04.1804 Jakob Maarten van Bemmelen Delft - 12.08.1874 Leiden), who had only a primitive laboratory at his disposal, where van Bemmelen made some quantitative inorganic analysis. Van der Boon Mesch studied fermentation, mineralogy, industrial chemistry, construction of voltaic batteries and boiling points of water/alcohol mixtures. In 1852, van Bemmelen was appointed as an assistent in the laboratory of Professor Petrus Jan van Kerckhoff (1813 - 1876) in Groningen. Van Kerckhoff was head of the chemistry institute since 1851. -

I9I3- SAMUEL FRANKLIN EMMONS.0 FRANKLIN EMMONS was born in Boston, March 29, 1841, and died at his home in Washington, March 28, 1911, lacking only one day to complete his seventieth year. He was the fifth child and third son of Nathaniel Henry Emmons, for many years a prominent and highly respected merchant of Boston, engaged in the East India and China trade. His earliest known ancestor on his father's side was Thomas Emmons, whose name appears on the records of the Island of Aquidneck as aiding to found the Rhode Island Colony and later the town of Newport, from 1638 to 1641. -

Chem. 17/18 (1995) 1 THE 1993 DEXTER ADDRESS Thomas Burr Osborne and Chemistry ph S. rtn, Yl Unvrt I count it an honor to appear before a meeting of the Division of the History of Chemistry. My talk will deal with the place of Thomas Burr Osborne in the histori- cal development of protein chemistry (1). To begin with, I will describe briefly the state of that field in the late 1880s and the circumstances that brought Osborne into it. I will then try to summarize his work in relation to that of his principal contemporaries. Finally, I will speak about Osborne's qualities as a leader of his research group. Osborne was a Connecticut Yankee who spent his entire life in New Haven. He was born there in 1859, went to Yale for his undergraduate and graduate stud- ies, and studied chemistry there with William Gilbert Mixter. He was the only son of a prominent New Ha- ven banker, who wanted young Osborne to join him in the Second National Bank, but at Yale he had become interested in analytical chemistry. A year after he had received his Ph.D., Osborne joined the staff of the Con- necticut Agricultural Experiment Station, located in New Haven, where he headed the Biochemical Laboratory until 1928. He died in New Haven in the following year (2). When Osborne came to the Station in 1886, its di- rector was Samuel William Johnson [1830-1909], whose daughter Osborne married in the same year (3, 4). Samuel William Johnson was born in Kingsboro, New York, July 3, 1830, the fourth child of Abner Adolphus and Annah Wells (Gilbert) Johnson. His ancestry traces back in every line to early colonial settlers in Connecticut. He studied in the district schools and the academy at L,owville, New York. He then alternately taught and studied in this country, Ger- many, and England until 1855, when he began his active serv- ice of forty years as a member of the faculty of the Yale (now the Sheffield) Scientific School. He was director of the Con- necticut Agricultural Experiment Station from 1877 to 1900. He was early a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and was chairman of its subsection on chemistry in 1875. -
