Renewal and maintenance of our facilities will continue to be the order of the day in the coming year as we replace all of our computing equipment. While this project may necessitate closing the RDC for a short period of time, I think we can all agree the end result will be well worth it. Our users can look forward to working on significantly faster machines with bigger screens to accommodate research teams (and systems that are unlikely to fail due to overheating!). Our research and computing consultant Dave Haans deserves our special thanks for being the point person for the execution of these projects. The following pages document the varied and successful research completed at the Toronto RDC and the many other dimensions of our activities. I know all our researchers join me in thanking our Statistics Canada and University of Toronto staffs for their dedication and service to the RDC. The RDC staff members are considered ad hoc steering committee members and are present at the meetings as needed by specific agenda items.     REPORT FOR ACTION Inclusion on the City of Toronto's Heritage Register and Intention to Designate under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act - 100 College Street Date: August 7, 2020 To: Toronto Preservation Board Toronto and East York Community Council From: Senior Manager, Heritage Planning, Urban Design, City Planning Wards: Ward 11 - University-Rosedale SUMMARY This report recommends that City Council state its intention to designate the property at 100 College Street under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act and include the property on the City of Toronto's Heritage Register. The Banting Institute at 100 College Street, is located on the north side of College Street in Toronto's Discovery District, on the southern edge of the Queen's Park/University of Toronto precinct, opposite the MaRS complex and the former Toronto General Hospital. Following the Nobel-Prize winning discovery of insulin as a life- saving treatment for diabetes in 1921-1922, the Banting Institute was commissioned by the University of Toronto to accommodate the provincially-funded Banting and Best Chair of Medical Research. Named for Major Sir Charles Banting, the five-and-a-half storey, Georgian Revival style building was constructed according to the designs of the renowned architectural firm of Darling of Pearson in 1928-1930. The importance of the historic discovery was recently reiterated in UNESCO's 2013 inscription of the discovery of insulin on its 'Memory of the World Register' as "one of the most significant medical discoveries of the twentieth century and … of incalculable value to the world community."1 Following research and evaluation, it has been determined that the property meets Ontario Regulation 9/06, which sets out the criteria prescribed for municipal designation under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act, for its design/physical, historical/associative and contextual value.

Chronological Events Natural Heritage Values 2000-2012 Cultural Heritage Values Recreational Values Thames River Integrity Guidelines Executive Summary Executive Summary The Thames River nomination for inclusion in the Canadian Heritage Rivers System (CHRS) was accepted by the CHRS Board in 1997. The nomination document was produced by the Thames River Coordinating Committee, a volunteer group of individuals and agency representatives, supported by the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) and Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA). The Thames River and its watershed were nominated on the basis of their significant human heritage features and recreational values. Although the Thames River possesses an outstanding natural heritage which contributes to its human heritage and recreational values, CHRS integrity guidelines precluded nomination of the Thames based on natural heritage values because of the presence of impoundments.

Our role in making technology accessible has evolved over time. As physical access to technology has improved, we have transitioned to providing skill development to our participants through the use of computers. This has enabled them to join the work force, become increasingly independent, and provide opportunities for social inclusion and entertainment through email, the web, and social media. For these reasons, training people to effectively use a computer remains central to our services. The accessibility mobile technologies are a major concern for people with disabilities.

Cineplex Digital Solutions and MNP LLP will occupy nearly half of the space available at the new Northfield Station development located at 137 and 139 Northfield Dr. W. The project is located next to a proposed light rail transit station and just minutes from the expressway. The Zehr Group believes the presence of a light rail transit stop will be a boon to the area in the north end of the city. “They always say ‘location, location, location,’ and I believe we have arguably one of the most interesting and best locations (in the city),” said Don Zehr, chief executive officer of The Zehr Group, the local developer responsible for the site. “If you don’t want to be right downtown, this is a really cool space to be in.” Cineplex will be moving from their current Waterloo location on McMurray Road and expanding to occupy the entire 14,600 square-foot office building at 137 Northfield Dr.
