Pickard-Cambridge, 1896 (Araneae, Dipluridae) is described, from a medium-sized lateritic cave in Parauapebas, Pará, Brazil. The male holotype and only specimen known of H. cerberus sp. n. was found near the entrance of Pequiá cave. This taxon is the fourth species described and the southernmost record for the genus. The new species displays some troglomorphic characteristics, such as reduction and merging of the posterior median and both pairs of lateral eyes and pale yellow to light brown coloration. -

Among other subterranean 27 taxa, spiders stand out as intriguing model organisms for their ecological role of top-predators, their 28 unique adaptations to the hypogean medium and their sensitivity to anthropogenic disturbance. 29 Since the description of the first eyeless spider (Stalita taenaria), an array of papers on 30 subterranean spider biology, ecology and evolution has been published, but a comprehensive 31 review on these topics is still lacking. -

These organisms live in a unique selective regime in per- manent darkness and usually low food availability, high air humidity in terrestrial habitats, and low tempera- ture range allied to other unique conditions related to lithologies and past climatic influences. The pressure to increase Brazil’s economic growth relies on agricultural/pastoral industries and exporting of raw materials such as iron, limestone, ethanol, soybean, cotton, and meat, as well as huge reservoir constructions to generate elec- tricity. Mining (even on a small scale), agricultural expansion, and hydroelectric projects are extremely harmful to subterranean biodiversity, via the modification and even destruction of hypogean habitats.
