Name: Class: Showdown in Little Rock By USHistory.org 2016 This informational text discusses the Little Rock Nine, a group of nine exemplary black students chosen to be the first African Americans to enroll in an all-white high school in the capital of Arkansas, Little Rock. Arkansas was a deeply segregated southern state in 1954 when the Supreme Court ruled that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. The Little Rock Crisis in 1957 details how citizens in favor of segregation tried to prevent the integration of the Little Rock Nine into a white high school. As you read, note the varied responses of Americans to the treatment of the Little Rock Nine. [1] Three years after the Supreme Court declared race-based segregation illegal, a military showdown took place in the capital of Arkansas, Little Rock. On September 3, 1957, nine black students attempted to attend the all-white Central High School. The students were legally enrolled in the school. The National Association for the Advancement of "Robert F. The Little Rock School Board agreed to gradual integration, with the Superintendent Virgil Blossom submitting a plan in May of 1955 for black students to begin attending white schools in September of 1957. The School Board voted unanimously in favor of this plan, but when the 1957 school year began, the community still raged over integration. When the black students, known as the “Little Rock Nine,” attempted to enter Central High School, segregationists threatened to hold protests and physically block the students from entering the school. -

Gazette Project Interview with Roy Reed Little Rock, Arkansas, 15 March 2000 Interviewer: Harri Baker Harri Baker: This is a continuation of interviews with Roy Reed and Harri Baker. This is March 15th in the year 2000. Roy, we had carried your story right up to the point where you are about to get hired by the Arkansas Gazette. So, how did that come about? It is the year of 1956. I understand that a childhood friend of yours was a printer at the Gazette and was somehow involved in the process. Roy Reed: That’s right. His name was Stan Slaten. Stanley and I grew up together in Piney, on the outskirts of Hot Springs. We chased girls together. In fact - -- I can’t remember if I told this or not --- Stanley wrecked my Model A pickup truck because he couldn’t stand it that the girl sitting between us was paying more attention to me than to him. He took his hands off the wheel just long enough to run off the bluff. Nobody was hurt. Stanley and I used to go out on the river, the Ouachita River, and put out trot lines. Now and then, we would get a hold of --- It seems to me the most whiskey that we were able to buy, between the two of us, was probably a pint or a half of a pint. With boys that are fifteen years old, that is about all it takes. We would build a fire and heat up wieners and do the things that 1 boys do that they consider necessary in growing up. -

Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Deakin University March 2018 Acknowledgements It is merely to state the facts as they are when I write that without the financial support of the Australian Postgraduate Award scholarship these acknowledgements would have gone unwritten, for this thesis would simply not exist. I remain indebted to Deakin University for seeing the value in this work of American history. I am grateful also for the research and conference grants Deakin makes available to their postgraduate students. The funds provided enabled me to travel to Abilene, Kansas, and conduct invaluable archival research in the Eisenhower Presidential Library. I admit to feeling like a “proper” historian only after I had sifted through scores of original documents from Eisenhower’s presidential years. I was fortunate also to visit the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, and the Columbia University Oral History Archives in New York. Today, a little more than three years after embarking upon this project, my commitment to this thesis and my belief that this work is worthy of the investment Deakin has made, persists. This has been an exciting, terrifying, challenging, anxiety-ridden and nerve-wracking process. Yet, had I the opportunity to reset the clock, I would make always the same decision. It has been nothing short of a luxury to be able to devote myself to the task of unravelling Dwight Eisenhower’s idealist imaginings of the United States for these past three years. -

RICE UNIVERSITY WITH HESITANT RESOLVE: ARKANSAS MOVES TOWARD SECESSION AND WAR BY JAMES WOODS A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE MASTER OF ARTS Dr.. Frank E. Vandiver Houston, Texas ABSTRACT This work surveys the history of ante-bellum Arkansas until the passage of the Ordinance of Secession on May 6, 186i. The first three chapters deal with the social, economic, and politicai development of the state prior to 1860. Arkansas experienced difficult, yet substantial .social and economic growth during the ame-belium era; its percentage of population increase outstripped five other frontier states in similar stages of development. Its growth was nevertheless hampered by the unsettling presence of the Indian territory on its western border, which helped to prolong a lawless stage. An unreliable transportation system and a ruinous banking policy also stalled Arkansas's economic progress. On the political scene a family dynasty controlled state politics from 1830 to 186u, a'situation without parallel throughout the ante-bellum South. A major part of this work concentrates upon Arkansas's politics from 1859 to 1861. In a most important siate election in 1860, the dynasty met defeat through an open revolt from within its ranks led by a shrewd and ambitious Congressman, Thomas Hindman. Hindman turned the contest into a class conflict, portraying the dynasty's leadership as "aristocrats" and "Bourbons." Because of Hindman's support, Arkansans chose its first governor not hand¬ picked by the dynasty. By this election the people handed gubernatorial power to an ineffectual political novice during a time oi great sectional crisis. -

HUNKE* As a former Editor-In-Chief of the North Dakota Law Review, 1966– 1967, I was flattered to receive an invitation to revise a CLE presentation of August 19, 2011 into a law review article. The presentation for the CLE was to discuss my experience as a trial lawyer practicing before Federal District Judge Ronald N. Davies. There are not too many of us left around who had the opportunity to actually try cases in Judge Davies’ court. I had that opportunity on several occasions. My personal experience as a lawyer with Judge Davies goes back to June 1 of 1967 when I started as a law clerk for Judge Charles J. Vogel. Judge Vogel, at that time, was Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. -

I a hegro too. Are you a hegro?” My mother loves to recount the story of how, as a three year old, I used this innocent, mis pronounced question to interrogate the garbagemen as I furiously raced my Big Wheel up and down the driveway of our rather large house on Park Avenue, a beautiful tree-lined street in an all-white neighborhood in Yakima, Washington. It was 1969. The Vietnam War was raging in South- east Asia, and the brutal murders of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Medgar Evers, and Bobby and John F. Kennedy hung like a pall over a nation coming to grips with new formulations, relations, and understand- ings of race, culture, and power. -

White Backlash in the Civil Rights Movement: A Study of the White Responses to the Little Rock Crisis of 1957 Abby Motycka, Class of 2017 For my honors project in the Africana Studies Department I decided to research the response from white southern citizens during the integration of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957. I want to explain the significance of Little Rock and its memorable story of desegregation broadcasted across the nation. Little Rock was in many ways the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement and a representation of tension between state and federal governments. The population shifted to appear predominantly segregationist and actively invested in halting plans for integration. Many white citizens chose not to participate, but others chose to join violent, vicious mobs. The complex environment leading up to the crisis of Little Rock was unexpected given the city’s reputation of liberality and particularly progressive southern Governor. No one could have predicted the nation’s first massive backlash to Brown v. Board of Education to be ignited in the small capitol of Arkansas or foreseen the mob violence that would follow. Analyzing white southern responses to African Americans at this time exposes the many dangerous ideologies and practices associated with American culture. Little Rock provides a specific location and event to compare to the other significant moments of white counter protest events in Birmingham, Montgomery, and Atlanta. I want to know how the white population evolved from moderate to outspoken on issues of education over the already integrated bus systems and stores. In my project, I explore approaches the white administration chose to take, including the School Board and the state government, to explain the initial and evolving response the state of Arkansas had to the Brown v. -

Your journey along the trail begins in Little Rock, Arkansas. Little Rock Central High School Historic Site Little Rock, AR DAY 1 – LITTLE ROCK Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site > Little Rock Nine Memorial at the State Capitol Begin your journey along the U.S. Civil Rights Little Rock Nine Memorial at the State Capitol Trail in Little Rock, the capital of Arkansas. Your course continues to the state Capitol to pay your respects at the Little Rock Nine Little Rock Central High School National Memorial. It features bronze sculptures of the Historic Site nine students, along with plaques bearing Your course begins at Little Rock Central quotations from each of them. Installed in High School National Historic Site, home to 2005, the statues face the governor’s office the Little Rock School Crisis of 1957. That fall, as a constant reminder of the struggle that while students were returning to the all-white took place. Little Rock Central High School, nine new African-American faces were to be among them. Gov. Orval Faubus, in a direct challenge to the federal desegregation law, called in the state National Guard to block the way. By the time the Little Rock Nine arrived on campus, more than 1,000 angry white protesters had flocked to the scene. Photographs of the clash between Gov. Faubus and the Little Rock Nine placed Little Rock Central High School at the center of the nation’s ongoing struggle to integrate public educational facilities.
