Strescon was brought onto the project by Shawmut Design and Construction. This was a unique project for Strescon, undertaking a “supply only” scope for precast panels, as well as miscella- neous caps and sills for the new exten- sions. During this collaborative project, Strescon shared detailing and Tekla models with Shawmut to provide 61-pre- cast panels, along with 27 caps and sills. All precast was designed specifically for the project and incorporated with the overall AVB wall system.

Construction required a detailed phas- ing plan. The existing library brick façade was first retrofitted with a temporary steel-frame bracing system, allowing Shawmut to remove the entire internal structure. A new structural steel frame was then erected within, and the wings of the building added to the ends to cre- ate the “jewel box” additions.

designers analyze a drainage water- When shed to design a culvert, a number of factors come into play. To start, they must determine present and potential land use to determine what the flow rate from the site will be; a steep paved site for instance, will have significantly higher flows than a flat forested site. They then determine the slope and make up of the drainage channel. Based on the flow characteristics of the drainage channel, they can then determine the size and shape of required culvert (or storm drainage system).

When determining culvert diameter, designers often find they need a size a little bigger than the 96” typically available. When this occurred, the available options were to size up to 120”, or redesign some other aspect of the project (ie: slope of the culvert, slope or shape of drainage channel, reconfiguration or restriction on the land use of the watershed, etc.) to give less flow.

In 2019, after consultation with the Department of Transportation, Strescon made the decision to pur- chase a new form to manufacture 108” (2745 mm), in order to fill the supply gap between 96” (2440) and 120” (3050).

The 9’ pipe has many advantages over 10’. For Strescon, the design and manufacture is easier and faster. Shipping is easier as well; with standard 8’ long sections, we can put two pieces on a flat bed, while with 10’ we are restricted to 7’ long if trying to ship 2 pieces together. For the designers, it gives an- other option when it comes to their design. For the contractor, lighter pieces, longer length, fewer joints, and a smaller trench to dig, means less material to handle and a faster job.

Ocean Steel Rebar began work with The Shaw Group Limited in early July and will be providing a total of 195.55 tons of rebar and 40,300 sqft of mesh.

OSCO Concrete’s Moncton Plant is also involved with this project, working with new customer, BYN Consulting. The building utilizes insulated con- crete forms (ICF) up to the first floor. OSCO provided 1625m3 beginning in July 2020. Work on the Kensington is expected to be complete in the fall of 2021.

Mill Lake Overpass Opts for GFRP

contributed by: Andrea Haines

llstar Rebar is currently work- Aing on the restructuring of Mill Lake Road Overpass in Mill Lake, NS for Dexter Construction Ltd. The project requires: 61,323 lbs of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP); 28 tons of galvanized rebar in the abut- ments and wingwalls, where the GFRP is used in the suspended section of the overpass; and stainless steel wire to tie.

GFRP is made from extremely fine fibers of glass. It is a lightweight, extremely strong, and robust material. Although strength properties are somewhat lower than carbon fiber and it is less stiff, the material is typically far less brittle. Infrastructures often must be repaired or replaced because the steel rein- forcement within them has corroded, destroying the concrete microstruc- ture. This particularly applies to bridges exposed to de-icing salts. With the installation of GFRP, corrosion problems are eliminated.

Fabrication and placing is currently underway and is expected to be complete in December 2020. www.oscoconstructiongroup.com connections | fall & winter 2020 33 projects

ith 40+ years of experience, Borcherdt WConcrete Products Ltd is an industry Precast Concrete leader in the production of precast concrete stairs. Having Russell Cooke Stairs a controlled environment ensures a top-quality product, which is produced quickly and efficiently.

The benefits of Borcherdt’s precast concrete stairs extend onto the job site as well. Once on site, the stairs are lowered into place with a crane, and are easily installed with a variety of connec- tions. The precast stairs are compatible with steel, CMUs, cast-in-place concrete, and other precast units, allowing them to be installed into a wide range of buildings. The installation of the stairs can be done quickly while the building itself is being constructed. Once the stairs are in place, they have a clean, finished look and can be used immediately. This grants a safe and easy way for the contractor to carry materials, and move workers among the different levels. With concrete being such a durable building material, the pre- cast concrete stairs require minimal maintenance, and will last for the life span of the building.

The accompanying picture shows three workers from Tria Construction Inc. installing a stair unit at the Broad Street Apartment Building, lot 2-1 Broad Street, Bedford, Nova Scotia. Tria Con- struction is the Owner/Contractor for this development, and received their first load of stair units on Monday, June 8th. The first shipment consisted of 12 units, out of a total of 28. This was beneficial to the contractor, as it allows them to easily access the upper levels, as they continue to construct the building.

PRECAST CONCRETE Strescon Limited has been work- ing with the ownership team to help bring their vision to life. The structure will be a mixture of traditional cast- in-place concrete, structural precast elements, structural steel, and cold form steel wall panels (CFS).

Strescon was able to begin instal- lation on October 19th once the second level CIP slabs were com- plete, surveyed, and signed off. This mobilization included the first level of precast wall panels, as well as stairs and landings. The project has a dedicated tower crane, however a mobile crane is required to install approximately 4 of the 17 panels required per floor. Mobilization of the mobile is carefully planned, to ensure the work is installed seam- lessly, but also to avoid congestion of the site and potential dangers related to multiple cranes operating in the same vicinity.

ommercial Properties Limited (CPL) is one of Eastern Canada’s Ctop property developers and managers. With over 1,000,000 square feet under management, their buildings are local landmarks and home to some of the largest and most well-respected compa- nies in the region. Early in 2020, FCC Construction renovated a 2100 sq.ft. office space in CPL’s Centerbeam block, in Uptown Saint John, NB. The new space allows the tenant, CBCL Limited, to better ac- commodate their existing workforce and allow for further expansion.

FCC was selected as the preferred contractor by CPL to generate a budget and construct the new office space for this important tenant. In addition to new office space, the renovation also included a new meeting room. Temporary shoring, demolition, and wall repairs were required to create an opening in an existing 2-foot thick brick wall to accommodate a new office entrance and stairs. FCC Electri- cal was responsible for the power, data and communications portion of the work, led by Ron Rathje. Bob Buell acted as FCC Construc- tion’s Site Superintendent, bringing the project to a successful completion over 4 weeks in March and April.
