It started out as a song associated with the slaves’ struggle for freedom, but after the American Civil War (1861-65) it became a very high-spirited peace song for people who were fed up with fighting.1 And the folk singer Pete Seeger notes on the record “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy and Other Love Songs”, that: "'Down by the Riverside' is, of course, one of the oldest of the Negro spirituals, coming out of the South in the years following the Civil War."2 But is the song as we know it today really as old as it is claimed without any sources? The earliest printed version of “Ain't gonna study war no more” is from 1918; while the notes to the song were published in 1902 as music to a love song by John J.     The Gospel Side of Specialty Records – The Post-War Period by Opal Louis Nations A historical backdrop: It is generally acknowledged that almost from the start of Art Rupe’s involvement in the country’s popular vernacular musics, gospel and spiritual expressions were among his keenest passions. He would often drop in on a church gospel program and sometimes shed a tear when moved by a particular jubilee quartet spinning on a phonograph. Rupe told me that during his boyhood he was exposed to gospel music emanating from the open windows in the summer from the African American Baptist church in his hometown neighborhood in Pennsylvania. Rupe did not fit the stereotypical hard-nosed, cash-driven, stogie-stompin’ record mogul. He was an intelligent, quiet, analytical and compassionate character who not only got involved in disseminating black talent to make a quick buck but genuinely enjoyed the musics he put out. At the close of gospel’s golden age, when the 1960s came around, the popular music industry began to transform itself into one that conjoined politics with culture. 1964 saw the advent of “The British Invasion.” A year later rock & roll had fully matured into rock and its separate audiences had blended into one and, says Philip H. While the production and content of this genre have been explored by scholars, few studies have attended to the devotional use of the genre and its role in shaping the religious lives of American evangelicals. This project draws from several sets of data to address this matter: analysis of church-created worship music albums, listener testimonials on Christian radio websites, and focus group interviews of laity and clergy at four South Carolina churches. The data revealed that music is significant to their religious lives outside of church as a means of encountering God, managing emotions, and displaying spiritual capital. Inside churches, the music is used to create a sense of corporate identity that reinforces social bonds within the community and attracts newcomers. Drawing on the methodological framework of Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of practice and his work on social distinction, I argue that American evangelicals who listen to Christian contemporary music are engaged in aural piety, a set of practices, attitudes, and ideas invested in music that structure and evoke the experience of the sacred.

The essay investigates the history of a particular form of shape-note singing practiced by African American groups throughout the twentieth century. Oral histories with members of the group reveal a once-wide network of singers supported by songbook publishers and conventions that drew attendees in the thousands. Though changes in musical taste and church structure mean that the style of singing has faded in popularity, groups like the United Shape Note Singers still meet to sing from their well-worn songbooks for the spiritual pleasure and sense of community that it provides. In doing so, they continue the tradition of a unique singing style that is rooted in sacred hymn singing and influenced by modern gospel, yet cannot be easily classified as either.

    “John the Revelator”--The Golden Gate Quartet (1938) Added to the National Registry: 2005 Essay by Kathryn Kemp (guest post)* Golden Gate Orchestra, reissue Gospel, as a distinct musical genre, has a long rich history that pre-dates the arrival of enslaved Africans to the English colonies in America. The Negro spiritual, as an art form, was created in “hush arbors”--sacred spaces where people could sing and worship away from the oppression and inhumanity of chattel slavery. The spirituals sprang from the experiences of the African people and share their consciousness of life in Africa and America. These enslaved persons developed a theology to explain the existence of a God who loved them but also allowed them to live in bondage. Their understanding of the God taught in the new religion of the Bible contained stories that gave them hope and faith. Stories about the Hebrew children in Egypt who were liberated by Moses. They heard stories about Jesus the Christ--who gave freedom to all who believed in His name. American folk music derived from this early tradition of Negro spirituals. These songs were the first indigenous musical form developed by people of African origin in America. W.E.B. Du Bois asserts it “remains as the singular spiritual heritage of the nation and the greatest gift of the Negro people.” Negro spirituals moved from “hush arbors” and churches to classrooms when they became part of a musical curriculum in high school and college glee clubs. Arranged spirituals, sung and performed by the Fisk Jubilee Singers (formerly known as the Nashville Singers), popularized the music of people of African ancestry throughout concert halls in American and Europe during the 1890s.

More specifically, it addresses the paradoxical suggestion that black gospel artists themselves were typically escapist, apathetic, and politically uninvolved—like the black church and black masses in general—despite the “classical” Southern movement music being largely gospel-based. This thesis argues that gospel was in fact a critical component of the civil rights movement. In ways open and veiled, black gospel music always spoke to the issue of freedom. Topics include: grassroots gospel communities; African American sacred song and coded resistance; black church culture and social action; freedom songs and local movements; socially conscious or activist gospel figures; gospel records with civil rights themes.

Twentieth century United States examples are drawn from early musical recordings from 1909, concerts from the 1930s, through dramatic literature and theaters including Broadway stages from the 1950s, to internationally popular film and music video renderings of gospel performance through the 1990s.
