Taylor tells game designers and critics, “[r]ather than simply being frustrated about players who do not play a game ‘right’ or who ‘mess up’ otherwise perfect systems . we need to take seriously the range of interventions that occur and why” they occur when players engage with video games (158-59). In other words, it would be a mistake to focus our attention on game systems and possibility spaces while ignoring or disparaging player agency. Even just within the genre of role-playing games (RPGs, referring in this essay only to the video game variety, though the genre sprang from and still thrives in other media), the wide variety of available experiences has spawned communities of players who fiercely advocate for their favorite games and playstyles.2 To date, analysis of these diverse game experiences has primarily focused on genres, player types, or possibility spaces, approaches that have all demonstrated their value to game criticism and design. In this essay, however, I argue that these approaches should be supplemented with an analysis of the roles players assume in relation to games (and to their communities and storyworlds). Analysis of player roles—and of the dynamics of role affordance involving designers as well as players—helps bridge the gap between existing analyses of player types and possibility spaces. You've just landed yourself in the Netherworld (well, A netherworld), home to demons, angels, the occasional lost humans (and even robots!), and the souls of dead evil people, who have been turned into demonic peg- legged penguins that explode when you throw them around, where they must work awful jobs for low wages to buy their way into forgiveness for their sins. First, a note about Characters, Quality, Reincarnation, and Death in Disgaea: All characters begin at level one, with low attributes. Wandering around the Netherworld killing monsters and demons, and other things lets you gain experience, mana, levels, and increased abilities. Your Quality affects just how low your starting abilities are – Crappy characters have abysmal capabilities, and gain power slowly. Genius characters start out much stronger/faster/smarter, and gain power much faster. A Genius at level 1 might have twice the stats of a Crappy character, and as they get higher level, the divide becomes even bigger. Once you've gained a certain amount of mana, you can trade that experience in to forcibly reincarnate, sending yourself back to level zero, and (possibly, if you've got enough mana gathered up) improve your Quality a level or three, so that you gain power faster on your next “life”. Reincarnating from a high level also lets you keep some of your traded-in power in the form of proportionate boosts in your stats, and keeping any non-class restricted skills from your last life. (IE: if you change from a Zombie to a Mage, you won't be able to use the Zombie's Puke attack, but if you go from Mage to Zombie, you can keep your Magic spells.) Reincarnating drops your mana, experience, and level all back down to nothing.

    Disgaea: Hour of Darkness (Jumpchain-compliant CYOA) By HeavensAnon Version 1.0 You are greeted with nothing. A black, all-encompassing nothing. The nothingest of nothings that never not did nothing. Whatever that’s supposed to mean, anyways. A second later, someone takes the bag off of your head and you’re immediately somewhere else. Namely, it’s an ornate palace of some kind. It looks like it has seen better days, though, and there’s a lot of ruins and rubble around you. Plus several dirty magazines that a knife-eared demon is sleeping under. Before you can move or give much thought to this, a very flamboyant man with an open jacket stands in front of you, his arms spread wide. “Welcome, Jumper, to the Netherworld! I am Vyers, the Dark Adonis, and I will be your guide today!” A subtitle beneath his name appears, reading ‘Mid-Boss’. An enemy? Seconds before you can ask a question or immediately prepare to defend yourself, he raises his arms defensively and takes a step back. Even the most innocuous response will earn this reaction. “W-wait, wait, calm down! I’m doing this because that person asked me to! Please, don’t harm my beautiful face!” ...what on earth has your benefactor told him about you? After an awkward pause, he clears his throat and spreads his arms out again. While he’s speaking, you can vaguely hear something in the back of your mind… Namely, it’s me. I’m still around, I’m just letting this doofus do the legwork this time around.
