Box 41165, Tucson, Arizona 85717 *Author for correspondence: [email protected] SUSAN RUTMAN 90 West 10th Street Ajo, Arizona 85321 JIM MALUSA School of Natural Resources and the Environment University of Arizona Tucson, Arizona 85721 [email protected] ABSTRACT A floristic account is provided for the grass family as part of the vascular plant flora of the contiguous protected areas of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, and the Tinajas Altas Region in southwestern Arizona. This is the second largest family in the flora area after Asteraceae. A total of 97 taxa in 46 genera of grasses are included in this publication, which includes ones established and reproducing in the modern flora (86 taxa in 43 genera), some occurring at the margins of the flora area or no long known from the area, and ice age fossils. At least 28 taxa are known by fossils recovered from packrat middens, five of which have not been found in the modern flora: little barley ( Hordeum pusillum ), cliff muhly ( Muhlenbergia polycaulis ), Paspalum sp., mutton bluegrass ( Poa fendleriana ), and bulb panic grass ( Zuloagaea bulbosa ). Non-native grasses are represented by 27 species, or 28% of the modern grass flora. -

Similar declines were noted in Sonora, Mexico; however, the species still persists at many sites in Mexico. Chytridiomycosis was detected during some declines and implicated in others; however, airborne pollutants from copper smelters, predation, competition, and extreme weather may have also been contributing factors. We collected Tarahumara Frogs in Sonora for captive rearing and propagation beginning in 1999, and released frogs to two historical localities in Arizona, including Big Casa Blanca Canyon and vicinity, Santa Rita Mountains, and Sycamore Canyon, Atascosa Mountains. -

Its author, Barry Lemcke, is a Northern Australian livestock scientist with over 42 years of experience, including a career focus on buffalo management research. The Manual reflects the extent of Barry’s knowledge and experience gained over his long career and is written in a style that makes the information accessible for all readers. It includes findings from research undertaken at Beatrice Hill Farm, Australia’s only buffalo research and development facility as well as from Barry’s travels related to the buffalo industry in numerous countries. The success of the dual purpose NT Riverine Buffalo derived from Beatrice Hill Farm, which now have progeny Australia-wide, can be largely attributed to Barry’s knowledge, dedication and persistence. As in years past, the cover of this year’s publication is designed to convey the scope of the Bureau’s complex and multifaceted mission using visual imagery. The 80-plus tables inside the document tell the story of the BLM’s mission, programs, and accomplishments using numerical data and detailed footnotes. Many of the minor acreage changes from 1 year to the next occur because: 1. Inholdings have been acquired or some other land exchange has taken place during the year. 2. Better GIS mapping of land boundaries has enabled us to recalculate the total BLM acres within the unit. Public Land Statistics is available on the Internet. Note that the data presented in the 2007 Public Land Statistics tables may not exactly match the data in other BLM publications covering Fiscal Year 2007 operations and accomplishments. Keith Geologist Bulletin 189 1974 Reprinted 1984 Arizona Bureau of Geology and Mineral Technology Geological Survey Branch The University of Arizona Tucson ARIZONA BUREAU Of GEOLOGY AND MINERAL TECHNOLOGY The Arizona Bureau of Geology and Mineral Technology was established in 1977 by an act of the State Legislature. Under this act, the Arizona Bureau of Mines, created in 1915, was renamed and reorganized and its mission was redefined and expanded. The Bureau of Geology and Mineral Technology, a Division of the University of Arizona administered by the Arizona Board of Regents, is charged by the Legislature to conduct research and provide information about the geologic setting of the State, including its mineral and energy resources, its natural attributes, and its natural hazards and limitations. In order to carry out these functions, the Bureau is organized into two branches: Geological Survey Branch. Staff members conduct research, do geologic mapping, collect data, and provide information about the geologic setting of the State to: a) assist in developing an understanding of the geologic factors that influ ence the locations of metallic, non-metallic, and mineral fuel resources in Arizona, and b) assist in developing an understanding of the geologic materials and pro cesses that control or limit human activities in the state. -

Plans are published by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and sometimes prepared with the assistance of recovery teams, contractors, state agencies and others. Recovery plans do not necessarily represent the views, official positions or approval of any individuals or agencies involved in the plan formulation, other than FWS. They represent the official position of FWS only after they have been signed by the Regional Director.
