As a result, this thesis provided an in-depth study into understanding Mental Toughness (MT) and its development within elite football referees. A secondary purpose was to use the findings of the series of studies contained herein, to bridge the gap between theory and applied practice by providing recommendations for football officiating National Governing Bodies (NGBs), sport psychology consultants, and developing a programme aimed at facilitating officiating excellence and enhancing effective referee development. The aim of the first study of the thesis was to provide an in-depth understanding of football officiating excellence in the context of English Premier League (EPL) refereeing. Specifically, in this study, 15 “Select Group” referees (i.e., a panel of elite football officials governed to referee EPL matches) were interviewed about their perceptions of factors underpinning officiating excellence. Overall, the findings of study one indicated that there was no single dominant factor underpinning football officiating excellence, rather a variety of social (e.g., support networks), physical (e.g., superior physical components), environmental (e.g., opportunities to thrive), and psychological factors (e.g., personal characteristics). In particular, it was clear that EPL referees rely on seven MT attributes (i.e., sport intelligence, achievement striving, tough attitude, high work-ethic, coping with pressure, robust self-belief, and resilience) to deal with the many demands in this elite football environment. Subsequently, this finding enabled a further study to examine MT in this area. Again, using one-to-one interviews, study two explored the same 15 Select Group referees to attain a comprehensive understanding of MT in elite football officiating. Central to this investigation, study two examined situations perceived to require MT in EPL refereeing, as well as the behaviours and cognitions deployed by referees in such situations. Findings revealed that these MT situations converged into five higher-order themes: pre-match situations, during-match situations, post-match situations, general elite refereeing situations, and general-life situations. Throughout these situations, a multifunctional set of adaptive patterns of behaviour (e.g., act as a barrier between players) and cognitive strategies (e.g., awareness of players' emotions) were outlined. Recommendations for the development of MT in football officiating were offered, which together with findings from study one, highlighted the need for the design and implementation of a MT intervention. The purpose of study three was to evaluate the effectiveness of a Mental Toughness Education and Training Programme (MTETP) in English football officiating. Taken together with the pilot study, the findings outlined the effectiveness of a MTETP on MT development and performance, provided a good starting point for future research in an effort to develop more robust MT interventions, and assisted sport psychology consultants who endeavour to enhance MT in football officials. From a theoretical perspective, the findings of this thesis provided a detailed insight into the specific factors underpinning football officiating excellence. In doing so, a comprehensive conceptualisation of MT and its development in the context EPL refereeing was achieved. From an applied perspective, future guidelines for NGBs, coaches, and sport psychology consultancy for the effective integration of MT education and training in elite football officiating were presented. Tom Webb a* a Department of Sport and Exercise Science, University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth, UK. * Email: [email protected] 1 Abstract The structure employed in England for referees and elite referees is something which has evolved as the game of Association Football has developed over time. This referee promotion, support and management system has changed more rapidly since the inauguration of the Premier League and latterly since the introduction of ‘full-time’ or ‘professional’ referees. The change in the promotion and support for elite referees has necessitated changes to that management structure at the elite level in particular. This article has utilised historical research to analyse the changes to these structures alongside semi-structured interviews as a means of analysing this evolving network for elite referees. Findings indicate that support for the changes which have occurred in elite refereeing regarding the establishment of ‘full-time’ referees are opposed, with alternating views also encompassing the current structure employed for managing elite referees in England and the pathways utilised for referee promotion. 2 The structure of refereeing in England has developed markedly from that observed before the instigation of the ‘professional’ or ‘full-time’ referee in 2001. There are various catalysts of change that can be identified and have impacted refereeing over a concerted period of time, such as the evolution of the Football Association, the relationship between the Referees Association and the FA, changes in society such as advancement in technological provision, the growth of new media, and the advancement of referee training.

The current study builds on this observation to examine the extent to which the Football Association’s antiracism programs have changed referee as well as fan behavior over the past several years. Analysis of data involving 421 players and over 10,500 matches – contested between 2003-04 and 2006-07 – indicates that a significant difference still exists in referees’ treatment of London-based Black footballers as compared with their White teammates at non-London matches (p=.004). At away matches in other London stadia, the difference was not significant (p=.200). Given the concentration of England’s Black population in the capital city, this suggests that it is fan reaction/overreaction to Black players’ fouls and dissent that unconsciously influences referee behavior. The first sequence of events have been held during November and December, with future events being planned early in the New Year. This is a developing scheme, and we will be working with The FA to gather the feedback. We may however be inviting several CRAs to aid the process of development, as there will be operational requirements needed to ensure a full and successful delivery. The initial feedback has been extremely positive, particularly in respect of previous members re-joining The RA, as we are delivering something which now aids educational benefits to ALL referees. This whole exercise would not have worked without the flexibility of LRAs in moving meeting dates, changing locations and organising local marketing. We are very grateful also to the RDOs and tutors who have supported The RA in achieving a highly successful first pilot. However this doesn’t come without a lot of hard effort via our excellent working relationship with The FA team of Danny Meeson and Richard Glynne-Jones, plus RA Board Member Vince Penfold.     Ayo Akinwolere BAFTA Nominated & RTS Award-Winning Broadcaster Ayo Akinwolere is an incredibly versatile BAFTA nominated and RTS award winning broadcaster. With an array of credits to his name, Ayo has worked across several genres and shows, starting his presenting career on the iconic national institution that is Blue Peter. It was at Blue Peter that he set a brand new world record for the deepest location for an open water swim, which saw him battle across a 5 mile stretch of water in the Pacific Ocean. This incredible feat of endurance was even more significant, as Ayo had a deep-rooted phobia of deep water, so much so that he only learnt to swim 10 weeks prior to the challenge! After completing this, he went on to devise the Swim Challenge, a national movement looking to address the dwindling number of swimmers in Britain. Within ten weeks, he took a group of non-swimmers and taught them to swim, whilst exploring the issues that stop so many from taking part. The project was supported by the BBC’s Get Inspired initiative and Speedo. The project’s legacy has seen hundreds of adults of different ethnicities and age groups learn to swim in East London; providing a more holistic and accessible way to teach the sport. With a natural aptitude and passion for sport, Ayo has gone on to present for flagship sports events and broadcasts at the BBC, including the London mini-marathon and commentary duties on the South African World Cup for CBBC. His work within this genre has seen him interview some of the greats of sport including Pele, Usain Bolt, Lewis Hamilton and Jessica Ennis.
