Published online 10 July 2008. A fragment of right tibio-fibula from the bed of the Oosterschelde deep channel is identified as Trogontherium cuvieri, not recorded previously from this area. The bone is larger than other material from Late Pliocene/ Early Pleistocene deposits in the Netherlands and the UK and falls within the size range of Middle Pleistocene material. Various interpretations are possible: size variation through time, sexual dimorphism (not previously recorded) or else the mixing of Middle Pleistocene material with the fauna from the Oosterschelde deep channel. We document three major Middle to Late Pleistocene stratigraphic packages over a 401‐km2 area (Norfolk Vanguard/ Boreas Offshore Wind Farm), offshore East Anglia, UK, through the integration of 2D seismic, borehole and cone penetration test data. The lowermost unit is predominantly fluviatile [Yarmouth Roads Formation, Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 19–13], including three northward‐draining valleys. The middle unit (Swarte Bank Formation) records the southernmost extent of tunnel valley‐fills in this area of the North Sea, providing evidence for subglacial conditions most likely during the Anglian stage (MIS 12) glaciation. The Yarmouth Roads and Swarte Bank deposits are truncated and overlain by low‐energy estuarine silts and clays (Brown Bank Formation; MIS 5d–4). Smaller scale features, including dune‐scale bedforms, and abrupt changes in cone penetration test parameters, provide evidence for episodic changes in relative sea level within MIS 5. The landscape evolution recorded in deposits of ~MIS 19–5 are strongly related to glacial–interglacial cycles, although a distinctive aspect of this low‐relief ice‐marginal setting are opposing sediment transport directions under contrasting sedimentary process regimes.

Highlights An updated account of the Mollusca and mammals from the Weybourne Crag in the UK and NL. A Macoma balthica–Mya arenaria concurrent range zone is defined, tracable across the North Sea. The small mammals from the Weybourne Crag and its correlatives belong to Mammal biozone MNR1. Details of the first British records of the voles Mimomys hordijki and Ungaromys dehmi are provided. Amino acid dating supports the contemporaneity of the Macoma balthica–Mya arenaria concurrent range zone. Amino acid data indicate that the Baventian cold stage post-dates the Bramertonian. The Baventian and „Pre-Pastonian a‟ (Weybourne Crag) appear to be distinct cold stages. Revised age for the „Weybourne Crag‟ has implications for the duration of the Norwich Crag and the Tiglian. Abstract In the North Sea basin the marine bivalve Macoma balthica first appears within the Early Pleistocene „Weybourne Crag‟, which forms an important biostratigraphical datum.

They reflect the transformation of the alpine margin from a foot- hill ramp to the overdeepened amphitheatre (today’s topography). The ‘Deckenschotter’ reflect not only fluvial incision but also, according to major differences in petrographical composition, the evolution of their alpine source area (alpine Rhine Valley). The eldest glacial till is in contact with the ‘Mindel-Deckenschotter’, displaying no evidence of major overdeepening in this early time slice. Most glacial and meltwater deposits are attributed to three major foreland glaciations of the Rhineglacier forming three generations of overdeepened basins. The eldest basins are directed northward to the Donau, those of the last glaciation go west towards the Rhine. This re-orientation improves the resolution of glacial sediments and landforms. The glacial deposits are traditionally described as chronostratigraphical system based upon glacial versus interglacial units.
