5 IHC KULANU • MAY/JUNE 2017 www.ihcindy.org TEMPLE LIBRARY

Evelyn Pockrass, Librarian; [email protected]

When you are used to knowing someone is there for close to 38 years, it becomes difficult to realize that the person no longer will be in the building on a routine basis. JEWISH BOOK CLUB Most of us have taken for granted that Cantor Janice Roger is there when we need NEXT MEETING her—for weddings, births, Religious School, adult education classes, consecration Tuesday, May 9, 2017 and confirmation, bar and bat mitzvah, Shabbat and holiday services, special THE ENGLISH GIRL celebrations, hospital and home visits, deaths, as well as the worship, chevra chesed by Yiftach Atir and other IHC committees, the 65th Street Klezmer, IHC’s biennial Cultural Arts Festival, Second Sunday concerts, High Holy Day radio broadcasts, Early Childhood Center music including Hanukkah and other presentations, Purim plays, choirs, Tuesday, June 13, 2017 mitzvah stitchers, creative skits and music for all age groups—just to name a few MISCHLING programs and activities that immediately come to mind (and am certain I have left by Affinity Kinar out many).

Not only has Cantor Janice been there for us, she always has been prepared. Even July: No meeting scheduled when she was on a short sabbatical in Israel, Janice had her articles ready for the monthly bulletins. As congregants we know that Janice has been there; through the years she was the constant and reassuring presence. Tuesday, August 8, 2017 For Temple Library, our cantor has been there too—more than many could imagine. THE TWO-FAMILY HOUSE The congregation’s library was re-established in 1989 and initially had been under by Lynda Cohen Loigman the aegis of the assistant or associate rabbi. Simply put, Janice has been there for us. On a personal note, both Janice Lowenstein and my family arrived in Indianapolis during the summer of 1979. Janice helped prepare two of my sons when they became bar mitzvah age. She always expressed interest in the family and officiated at the wedding of my youngest son. We all can remember the times over the years when Janice was there for us. It will seem strange not to be able to rely on Janice for a multitude of questions—including being the person who can answer inquiries about decades of past congregants and their families. Yet we know that Janice deserves a well-earned retirement and wish her, Brandon, Eddie and Miles the best in the coming years. She has been there for all of us at IHC, has represented us with distinction in the community, and for that we are forever grateful. We also remember hearing Janice sing Avinu Malkeinu for the first time in 1979, and in the ensuing years. Those glorious sounds will always remain here at Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation. Thank you, Cantor Janice Lowenstein Roger.

7 IHC KULANU • MAY/JUNE 2017 www.ihcindy.org NEWS FROM THE IHC ADAMAH INITIATIVE Last summer, we invited IHC members to meet and discuss ways to promote Jewish values through environmental actions. Since our initial meeting, we have put some of our ideas into action. We want to share the wonderful work of our committee with the congregation and encourage more people to join with their great ideas and resources for making those ideas a reality. What is the Adamah Initiative? A voluntary group of congregants that meets monthly to discuss ways in which we can enhance our synagogue and Jewish community through efforts to preserve our environment. What are some projects the Adamah Initiative has been involved in? • Indianapolis Power and Light helped us with an energy audit and based on the findings, we applied for a grant through Hoosier Interfaith Power and Light that provided free LED light bulbs for the building. Many volunteers worked together to change out all of the light bulbs in the building to be more energy efficient. Residential customers can also contact IPL to complete an energy audit for their home. • Our second grade religious school classes partnered with Leaves of Faith and planted five native trees on our campus. The children learned from a trained arborist how to plant and care for the trees as well as how each one benefits our Indiana ecosystem. • The theme of this year's Rosh Hashanah Retreat was "Building a Sustainable and Meaningful Relationship with our Natural World" with workshops focusing on energy efficiency, building home rain gardens and reusing old t-shirts for a fun family project. • This summer, we have partnered with Silverthorn Farm to offer IHC members a convenient location to pick up weekly boxes of local, organic produce from their CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program. • The Adamah Initiative has hosted workshops on topics such as mass transit reform, home composting as well as a speaker series featuring Reverend Wyatt Watkins from Hoosier Interfaith Power and Light and Jessie Kharbanda from the Hoosier Environmental Council. • Our latest project is to begin a recycling program at IHC with a grant from the Religious Action Center. Watch for new bins that will make it easy to help reduce the amount of waste our congregation sends to the incinerator. How can I become involved with the Adamah Initiative? We are energized by the growing appreciation and work people are doing to lead more sustainable lifestyles. If interested in joining our mailing list and attending upcoming meetings, please email: [email protected]. Also, check the IHC website, social media and Kulanu for announcements about upcoming educational workshops and volunteer opportunities to support ongoing projects. And finally, we can all do our part to impact our precious planet such as turning off the lights when leaving a room at IHC, signing up to receive the Kulanu electronically or recycling your paper copy.

Karen Rossen, IHC Sisterhood President; [email protected] In March, Sisterhood hosted our 5th annual Women's Seder. As in prior years, it was a well-attended event, with beauty for the eyes, good food to taste, and warmth from sharing special time with the women of IHC Temple Sisterhood and guests. It was a great way to start the Passover season. A big thank you to all of the Sisterhood members and IHC staff who spent hours planning, setting up, cleaning up, and enjoying our Women's Seder! Lest you think that Sisterhood is all ladies in white gloves sipping tea, I would like to put a spotlight on Rita Kohn, who was honored by the Indiana Craft Beer community in March. Rita Kohn, Sisterhood member and Gift Shop volunteer, was recognized with a beer created in her honor by the brewers at Scarlet Lane Brewery and Broad Ripple Brew Pub. Rita is a playwright, blogger and writer (in addition to Sisterhood identity) with more than two decades of exploring and ENGAGE WITH SISTERHOOD reporting on Indiana craft beer. We couldn't have been more proud than to visit May 3...... Torah Talk Scarlet Lane Brewery and lift a pint of Hangin' Tough with Rita. May 10...... Sisterhood Board Meeting Looking forward, we are working on a memoir of IHC Temple Sisterhood at 100 years May 10...... Torah Talk old. Looking ahead to our centennial celebration this October, IHC Sisterhood wants to hear about how we've touched your life! Do you have fond memories of opening Sisterhood care packages in your dorm room? Do you always mail your dad a few dozen Sisterhood hamentaschen for Purim? Did you buy your ketubah at the Sisterhood gift shop? Did a Sisterhood meal train help your family through a rough time? Send your stories and photos to [email protected], or drop us a note in the Sisterhood mailbox in the IHC office. If you have other Sisterhood memorabilia—a Seder plate from a Sisterhood Seder? A pair of candlesticks? Let us know if you might be willing to lend them to us for display. We hope to be able to share many of your stories and comments as part of our celebration. So please save these dates for our 100th Birthday Celebration: October 20 – Sisterhood Shabbat & Birthday Oneg Shabbat October 21 – Co-Ed Centennial Celebration
