XLII / 2007) From the Baron & Baroness Unto the populace of fair Aneala do Lachlahn and Jane send greetings, in hopes this missive finds you in good health and spirits as we approach the festive season of the year . It has been a time of much coming and going, and we take this opportunity first to welcome our new champions - Lord Donnchadh Baillie, Champion of Rapier, Lord Jehan de Benne, Champion of Archers, and Lord Prospero ab Aqua, who stays with us now as Champion of Armoured Combat. We also wish to express our heartfelt thanks to Baroness Catherine, Sir Kane, and Lord Prospero for their efforts as our champions over the past year. We have high hopes of our current champions, and feel sure they will live up to the standard set by their predecessors. We also bid farewell to Signora Catalina, our newly appointed ambassador to the Spanish Empire, and wish her well in her travels to her homeland, trusting that she will return to us in due time. We shall miss her company and her organisational skills! On a brighter note, our hearts are gladdened by the return of Alicia the Pastry Chef, looking much recovered from her recent misadventure. As we write, we recall the valiant deeds displayed this day upon the field of combat during the College of St Basil's Challenge. All the challenges issued by the Barony were met with courage and skill by the College combatants, and a most enjoyable and entertaining day was had by all. We are particularly mindful of the efforts of Walter MacMahon, whose first event as steward shows immense promise. We recall, on this occasion, the words of good Queen Bess - "The end crowneth the work". We look forward to seeing great things from this young gentle. In closing, good gentles, we leave you with more words from Her Majesty Elizabeth of England, which we feel particularly appropriate on the occasion of the November Crown Tourney - "What a family is without a steward, a ship without a pilot, a flock without a shepherd, a body without a head, the same, I think, is a kingdom without the health and safety of a good monarch." We remain Yours in service, Lachlahn Jane Baron Baroness Page 3 The Vine ~ Vol. 14, Issue 7 (November A.S. XLII / 2007) From the Baroness Greetings, good gentles. I have decided, given the numbers of forms I have so far received, to extend the census deadline to Sunday fortnight, being November 11 (Remembrance Day). My hearty thanks to those of you who have returned forms (or have told me you are about to return them!) Also, should you not have a device, or have an unregistered device, please feel free to leave the device section blank. It will be enough to have your name and a depiction of your dwelling for the map. Yours in service, Jane. [ Chronicler’s note: The form can be downloaded from here: http://aneala.sca.org.au/resources/censusform.pdf ] From the Seneschal I was thinking about where we are at with The Barony of Aneala. For a long time Aneala has been one of the most active groups in Lochac. This is not surprising as our nearest group is 32 hours away by car or 4 hours away by plane. In all, it’s a good group, with lots to offer anyone who would care to join. So what do you want from Aneala? What are you prepared to do to get it? Groups don’t just run themselves; they take officers and autocrats to make it all work. It doesn’t take a lot of work as there are so many officers to do a little each, but to remain a Barony Aneala needs a full slate of officers. We have a number of vacant offices right now and some with officers looking to hand on. Let’s look at what some of the officers’ roles are so you can pick the one for you. All officers at Baronial level are expected to hand on after 2 years, with a maximum term of 4 years if you’re having fun. Reeve (Book Keeper) Responsible for keeping the books Attend council with a current balance Give advice on financial spending to Council Help autocrats keep the financial reporting straight. The Honourable Sir Kane Greymane Viscount, Knight & Pelican Seneschal of Aneala Page 5 The Vine ~ Vol. 14, Issue 7 (November A.S. XLII / 2007) Officers Needed The Barony is always looking for people who are willing to contribute some of their time and energy to the service of all. CHATELAINE LISTS OFFICER If you are interest in either of these office, please contact the Seneschal at seneschal@aneala. sca.org.au , or on 9314 2506. Kane Greymane, Seneschal REEVE I would like to hand on the office of Baronial Reeve for MidSummer's feast, and to that end will be looking for a replacement to take on these duties. Reeve is not a hard office if you know how to read a bank statement and use a calculator. If you are interested please email Baroness Catherine de Arc (contact details in Regnum) to discuss the duties of the office in further detail. Senora Catalina de Gata, Reeve DEPUTY CONSTABLE The Office of Constable is responsible for signing-in people at events, and for collecting site fees. The Constable also collects property lost at events. Please note that this position is advertised with the idea that, once comfortable and well-versed in the office, the Deputy would assume the full Baronial Constable’s position. Mistress Rhianwen ni Dhiarmada, Constable [ Chronicler’s note: See pages 4 & 5 for descriptions of these Offices ] A Plea for Help Milady Angela, who has newly joined our happy band, is also a member of Trio Grosso, which, as some of you will know, is a long-running Early Music group in Perth, and one with which we in Aneala have shared many happy times over the last score of years. She has decided to compile a history of Trio Grosso, and, as part of this effort, she asks all the populace of Aneala for any pictures they have of this excellent group. If any gentles reading this have pictures of Trio Grosso, please contact milady Angela at: [email protected] or on: 0421 957 555 Page 6 The Vine ~ Vol. 14, Issue 7 (November A.S.
