Pairing philosophy and literature, Professor Gottlieb asked us to discuss the ways in which Beckett contributed to intellectual history on the concept of nothing. While it was fairly manageable to summarize the views of the philosophers who predated him, when it came time to discuss Beckett’s own views on nothing, I found myself paralyzed. It was not so much that Beckett appeared to contribute to a philosophical debate on the matter, what seemed most original about his work was his formal play with the word “nothing.” From that course forward, I decided to dedicate my graduate work to exploring the conundrum of the relationship between philosophy and literature in Beckett’s work. For sparking my interest in this topic, I sincerely thank Professor Gottlieb. At Louisiana State University, I received further support in exploring this topic through a course with Dr. Joseph Kronick on the relationship between ethics and literature. Dr. Kronick not only gave me invaluable reading lists and helpful comments on my papers, he also spent countless hours discussing the topic with me. I thank him enormously for all of his feedback and encouragement in the process of formulating my topic and writing my dissertation. When I began to feel like everyone in the world wrote about Beckett and nothing, it was a comfort to learn that, at least he was generous enough to say, this topic was still somewhat interesting. iv PREFACE What is Beckett’s relationship to philosophy? This question has long dominated the critical discussion on Beckett’s work from early existentialist and Cartesian critiques to the current trend to figure Beckett as a post-structuralist. The dominant answer to this question has been offered in a mode of identification: Beckett’s writing aligns with this philosopher or that philosophical movement. The current drive toward interdisciplinarity lends itself to the idea that the barriers between the fields ought to be dismantled, yet this sense of “oughtness” fails to investigate whether the border between the fields can indeed be transgressed. That is why the purpose of my dissertation is to trouble a neat identification that often appears in the scholarship on Samuel Beckett, which suggests his writing represents a literary manifestation of philosophy, one that disrupts the longstanding separation of the two fields. Instead, I highlight the difficulty of assimilating Beckett’s writing with philosophy by arguing that he maintains a circuitous relationship to philosophy that does not resolve itself into identification with one movement even while his essayistic style approximates experimental philosophical prose. I arrive at this conclusion by first responding to the dominant strand in Beckett criticism that figures him as a philosopher whether of “existentialist,” “deconstructionist,” or Cartesian traditions. While such analyses are designed to undermine the “ancient quarrel” between literature and philosophy, in the first chapter, I argue that they actually serve to re-subordinate literature to philosophy since they depend on the preexisting philosophical text to explain the literary one. I thereby select a comparative approach as a way of exploring areas of intersection as well as disparity, which prevent the fields from being identified with each other. In chapter two, I provide a theoretical basis for highlighting the difficulty of assimilating philosophy with literature. To do so, I review twentieth-century theory on the ancient quarrel v between literature and philosophy—turning to Derrida, Blanchot, Kristeva, and Levinas—to demonstrate that the figures who are often employed to support the disintegration of the disciplines actually express hesitations at such a vision of sameness. As I discuss, many of these thinkers affirm Plato’s original characterization of literature as a field that remains philosophy’s other since it depends on rhythm rather than a rigorous, logical methodology (Levinas and Kristeva); raises questions of ethics since it does not necessarily advocate for a moral perspective (Levinas and Blanchot); and unlike philosophy, does not argue systematically for a particular thesis (Blanchot). Furthermore, Beckett’s separation of literature and philosophy, circuitously, places him in a Platonic camp. Since the question of the relationship between literature and philosophy is such a broad one, I then take a turn to examine one philosophical and aesthetic concept, “nothing,” that has long dominated discussions of Beckett’s work to understand where Beckett’s use of the term fits on a continuum between the two fields. In chapter three, I argue that, contrary to a longstanding tradition in Beckett studies, exemplified by Lance Butler and Michael Bennett who posit that Beckett promulgates a consistent position that the nature of being is nothing, Beckett actually incorporates multiple, inconsistent philosophical positions on “nothing” into his work. For instance, his work both suggests that nothingness is impossible and that nothingness is an attainable goal as well as indicates that language proffers no meaning and that communication through language is inevitable. Instead of consequently arguing that Beckett’s preference for multiplicity indicates that he is a post-structuralist, I contend that his enduring uncertainty remains distinct from deconstruction’s systematic exploration of tenable possibilities. In chapter four, I turn to Beckett’s aesthetic sources to argue that his primary contribution to intellectual history was not to make an original argument about nothing, but to alter the formal vi properties that are conventionally associated with the word. For instance, while his predecessor Joyce often used the term “abyss” or “void” at moments of recognition and reversal, Beckett uses the word “nothing” repeatedly and continuously, indexing his turn away from narrative arcs. Similarly, while Baudelaire uses the word “abîme” to convey a sense of the terror and bliss of the sublime, Beckett’s abstract and empty “nothing” takes a turn toward the philosophical in the way it moves from the natural and toward the conceptual. After all, while the “abyss” has a physical referent in the oceanic deep, “nothing” is a pure concept in the sense that it has, by definition, no physical presence in the universe. Yet Beckett may have adopted such philosophical language not to contribute to intellectual history, but to surpass his literary predecessor’s negative aesthetics. In the fifth chapter, I return to the question of the relationship between philosophy and literature in Beckett works, but this time with the goal of investigating a formal area of overlap between the two fields, the essay. While acknowledging that such a comparison on the basis of style remains incomplete, I conclude that Beckett’s aggregation of inconsistent philosophical sources, his preference for abstraction, and his preference for a fragmented sentence structure mirrors the form of the Montaignian essay in the sense that it reflects the movements of an ever- shifting mind instead of a unified

To these function words, we apply methods from computational stylometry and model the stylistic evolution in Beckett’s oeuvre. Our analyses reveal a number of discoveries that shed new light on existing periodizations in the secondary literature, which commonly distinguish an “early,” “middle,” and “late” period in Beckett’s oeuvre. We analyze Beckett’s prose writings in both English and French, demonstrating notable symmetries and asymmetries between both languages. The analyses nuance the traditional three-part periodization as they show the possibility of stylistic relapses (disturbing the linearity of most periodizations) as well as different turning points depending on the language of the corpus, suggesting that Beckett’s English oeuvre is not identical to his French oeuvre in terms of patterns of stylistic development.

Beckettovy hry jsou výsledkem již vlastní specifické poetiky; práce si dává za cíl sledovat, co přispělo k jejímu utvoření, jaké hodnoty jsou v jeho dramatu zastoupeny a jakým způsobem se jeho dramatická tvorba axiologicky vyvíjí. Výstupem práce je kritický pohled na co nejkomplexnější autorovo dramatické dílo z pohledu hodnot a stanovení příčin těchto proměn, a to v tematicko-komparativním a diachronním (tj. chronologickém) pojetí. In this article, I examine Beckettian universal values of Enlightenment, which will be exposed as self-serving mystifications that rationalize and instrumentalize the meaning of life. In this context, the awareness of the Enlightenment nature of Beckett’s writing in Waiting for Godot will be analysed along with the freedom appeal of his reader as he strives to attain the enlightenment. ‘For enlightenment, all that is needed is freedom.’ (Kant 1991 [1784]) Suppose an individual in the world which is a hard shell that he attempts to toss it away, but for what; to think beyond it, and to relocate him beyond it in order to attain enlightenment. Whenever he looks above into the sky, the high sky, the clouds, the flying birds, the stars, the moon, the sun and the cosmos, those make him to forget the hard shell for a while until his eyes fell upon it and he is recaptured. Still into the pupil of his eyes he is reflecting the cosmos. This energy within him, within anyone has vitality and potentiality to reflect the cosmos, and to look beyond the hard shell. Let’s say that he has had an enlightenment experience. Enlightenment is a fact. It is the Truth itself.

    ‘FIRST DIRTY, THEN MAKE CLEAN’: SAMUEL BECKETT’S PERISTALTIC MODERNISM, 1932-1958 ADAM MICHAEL WINSTANLEY PhD THE UNIVERSITY OF YORK DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH AND RELATED LITERATURE MARCH 2013 1 ABSTRACT Drawing together a number of different recent approaches to Samuel Beckett’s studies, this thesis examines the convulsive narrative trajectories of Beckett’s prose works from Dream of Fair to Middling Women (1931-2) to The Unnamable (1958) in relation to the disorganised muscular contractions of peristalsis. Peristalsis is understood here, however, not merely as a digestive process, as the ‘propulsive movement of the gastrointestinal tract and other tubular organs’, but as the ‘coordinated waves of contraction and relaxation of the circular muscle’ (OED). Accordingly, this thesis reconciles a number of recent approaches to Beckett studies by combining textual, phenomenological and cultural concerns with a detailed account of Beckett’s own familiarity with early twentieth-century medical and psychoanalytical discourses. It examines the extent to which these discourses find a parallel in his work’s corporeal conception of the linguistic and narrative process, where the convolutions, disavowals and disjunctions that function at the level of narrative and syntax are persistently equated with medical ailments, autonomous reflexes and bodily emissions. Tracing this interest to his early work, the first chapter focuses upon the masturbatory trope of ‘dehiscence’ in Dream of Fair to Middling Women, while the second examines cardiovascular complaints in Murphy (1935-6). The third chapter considers the role that linguistic constipation plays in Watt (1941-5), while the fourth chapter focuses upon peristalsis and rumination in Molloy (1947). The penultimate chapter examines the significance of epilepsy, dilation and parturition in the ‘throes’ that dominate Malone Dies (1954-5), whereas the final chapter evaluates the significance of contamination and respiration in The Unnamable (1957-8).

    Samuel Beckett (1906- 1989) was born in Dublin. He was one of the leading t dramatists and writers of the twentieth century. In his theatrical images and t prose writings, Beckett achieved a spare beauty and timeless vision of human suffering, shot through with dark comedy and humour. His 1969 Nobel Prize for Literature citation praised him for ‘a body of work that in new forms of fiction and the theatre has transmuted the destitution of modern man into his exaltation’. A deeply shy and sensitive man, he was often kind and generous both to friends and strangers. Although witty and warm with his close friends, he was intensely private and refused to be interviewed or have any part in promoting his books or plays. Yet Beckett’s thin angular countenance, with its deep furrows, cropped grey hair, long beak- like nose and gull-like eyes is one of the iconic faces of the twentieth century. Beckett himself acknowledged the impression his Irish origin left on his imagination. Though he spent most of his life in Paris and wrote in French as well as English, he always held an Irish passport. His language and dialogue have an Irish cadence and syntax. Gordon In this study I present a new understanding of Vietnamese existentialism during the period 1954-1975, the period between the Geneva Accords and the fall of Saigon in 1975. The prevailing view within Vietnam sees Vietnamese existentialism during this period as a morally bankrupt philosophy that is a mere imitation of European versions of existentialism. I argue to the contrary that while Vietnamese existential philosophy and European existentialism share some themes, Vietnamese existentialism during this period is rooted in the particularities of Vietnamese traditional culture and social structures and in the lived experience of Vietnamese people over Vietnam’s 1000-year history of occupation and oppression by foreign forces. I also argue that Vietnamese existentialism is a profoundly moral philosophy, committed to justice in the social and political spheres. Heavily influenced by Vietnamese Buddhism, Vietnamese existential philosophy, I argue, places emphasis on the concept of a non-substantial, relational, and social self and a harmonious and constitutive relation between the self and other. The Vietnamese philosophers argue that oppressions of the mind must be liberated and that social structures that result in violence must be changed. Consistent with these ends Vietnamese existentialism proposes a multi-perspective iii ontology, a dialectical view of human thought, and a method of meditation that releases the mind to be able to understand both the nature of reality as it is and the means to live a moral, politically engaged life.

Hultgren Department of Education Policy and Leadership The purpose of this study is to understand the lived experiences of Taiwanese parachute students, so named because of their being sent to study in the United States, fr equently unaccompanied by their parents. Significant themes are revealed through hermeneutic phenomenological methodology and developed using the powerful metaphor of landing. Seven parachute students took part in several in -depth conversations with the researcher about their experiences living in the States, immersed in the English language and the American culture. Their stories are reflective accounts, which when coupled with literary and philosophic sources, reveal the essence of this experience of living in a foreign land. Voiced by teenage and young adult parachute students, the metaphor of landing as shown in their search for establishing a home and belonging, is the slate for the writing of this work’s main themes. The research opens up to a deeper understanding of this phenomenon in such themes as foreignness, landing and surveying the area; lost in the language; homesickness; and trying to establish friendships.
