Two Decades of Sports Excellence Two Decades of Sports Excellence Richmond Sports Awards Recipients 1998 – 2017 Published May 2018 Two Decades of Sports Excellence Since 1998, the Richmond Sports Awards have been presented annually to recognize and celebrate the achievements of outstanding Richmond community athletes and the leaders who make sports possible. The 2017 Awards, presented in May 2018, were the twentieth year in which the Awards have been presented. To date, 432 awards have been presented to 330 different Richmond sportspeople, organizations and teams. The inaugural Richmond Sports Awards were dedicated to the memory of Robert A. McMath, a pivotal civic figure in the development of Richmond, and especially its sporting community. The Awards have been presented each year by the Richmond Sports Council, the City of Richmond, and the Richmond Review/Richmond News. The lower half of this page shows a reconstruction of the Richmond Review article of April 1999 announcing the first Richmond Sports Awards. Robert A. Well done! 2 Richmond Sports Awards Recipients 1998 - 2017 The Richmond Sports Awards are presented based on achievements in each calendar year following nominations from the community. The awards are presented at a dinner and awards ceremony held in April/May of the following year. For example, the awards for 2017 were presented in April 2018. The Richmond Sports Awards are presented in different categories to recognize athletes at different stages of their sports careers and the different types of contribution of sport leaders. The athletes, teams and leaders receiving awards all come from Richmond and its sport organizations. Photograph By Chung Chow In his Olympic debut, Richmonds Arjan Bhullar placed 13 in the 120-kilogram mens freestyle wrestling division. The 26-year-old only gave up one point in each round, but was unable to score a point in his first-round loss to Irans Komeil Ghasemi. Ghasemi continued to win bronze overall, but by not snagging gold, he affected Bhullars opportunity to qualify for the repechage matches a second chance for wrestlers to fight another opponent and, perhaps, increase their scores. For him to be there, representing Canada, representing wrestling was huge, said Amit Sandhu, general manager of Am-Pri Construction Ltd., who officially sponsored Bhullar. I think he set a new bar for other Canadian wrestlers. He was the only Canadian in his division. Im sure well be seeing more Canadian wrestlers come out because of this. Sandhu, along with friends and family, gathered around the TV set in anticipation for Bhullars match early Saturday morning. Even though Bhullar didnt reach the podium, Sandhu said just seeing Bhullar on the screen filled him with pride. It was pretty amazing to see him there in the Opening Ceremonies, Sandhu said. There were about 180 Canadian athletes and there he was right in the front, representing Richmond. The partnership between the two men was something that resonated for both of them, as both strive to be positive role models and active members of their community, said Sandhu.

    Greetings from UFV Wrestling coaches Arjan Bhullar and Raj Virdi! We hope that you are as excited as we are about bringing CIS wrestling back to the province of BC, and that you will share this update on our program with your contacts and wrestlers. The University of the Fraser Valley wrestling team was recently accepted into the Canada West for the 2014-15 season. UFV will now compete in the five team conference which includes: the University of Alberta, the University of Calgary, the University of Saskatchewan, the University of Regina, and the University of Winnipeg. This is exciting news for the wrestling community in BC, since there hasn’t been a CIS wrestling team in the province since 2010 when Simon Fraser University transitioned into the NCAA. UFV Wrestling is currently training as the Fraser Valley Cascades Wrestling Club in preparation for next year’s Canada West/CIS debut. The club currently includes 12 men and 3 women, and has begun competing in numerous university level tournaments. So far the club is doing very well for a first year program, and we are hoping the team will become a force to be reckoned with for the 2014-15 season. This season began in September 2013. The first tournament of the year was the University of Calgary “Dino Open” on Oct. 25, 2013. Only four athletes competed at the tournament due to numerous injuries across the roster, yet the team earned two medals, a silver and bronze. Amrit Sund also dropped a very close match in the bronze medal bout, earning himself fourth place.

  • PRCS - 8 BWC Is Requesting the City of Richmond to Create Or Provide a Wrestling Facility for Our Non‐Profit Youth Program
    November 21, 2018 To: Honorable Malcolm Brodie, Mayor of Richmond Bhullar Wrestling Club (BWC) first opened in 1976 and by the early 90’s; BWC had become one of the elite wrestling programs in the city of Richmond, running alongside the city’s high school wrestling programs. In the 2000’s, Jagroop & Arjan Bhullar continued to compete under BWC and win at National and International Tournaments. In 2012 Jagroop & Arjan Bhullar reestablished BWC as a non‐profit program, running it as a volunteer‐ based program for children ages 5‐18 from all different backgrounds. Each child pays an insurance fee of $50 per year so that they are covered under the British Columbia Wrestling Association, and so that there is no liability on the club. The children are required to pay their insurance fees in order to protect themselves and that is it. This program is run on a volunteer basis. Our coaches volunteer their time to teach these kids the sport of wrestling, strictly for the love of the sport and in order to grow the sport in the city of Richmond. The program is now in its 6th year and we have grown from an 8‐member team in 2012 to a 75+ member team in 2018‐2019. During these 6 years we have developed 2 Provincial Champions, 2 National Champions, Provincial medalists, and our team has placed top 3 in several tournaments in both boys and girls categories. Graduates from our program have received scholarships at Douglas College, University of Regina, Simon Fraser University and University of Fraser Valley.
