Applied exploration and observation toward new forms of artistic and scholarly excellence. A culture of peers. An academic and inventive community committed to intense collaboration and the open exchange of ideas.

Individual excellence. The awareness of one’s strengths, personal integrity and a commitment to growth. Joy, laughter and delight. The realization that to be an artist/scholar and challenge one’s self and the world is a responsibility we embrace.

VPA lockup

The primary identifier for VPA is our lockup incorporating the full the names of the college and university. Use this preferred version whenever possible. Variations of the logo with alternate lockups are available to suit a range of communication formats when use of the preferred lockup is not possible. The following pages show a range of typographic structures paired with the mark. There are three designated lockups (i.e. large, small, medium). Each has its own set of corresponding electronic files that should be used as outlined in this document.

Primary lockup (shown in large format)_The logotype can be positioned to the top or bottom right of the logo, or typeset flush right, rag left if necessary.

Size requirements_It is recommended that the large logo be printed no larger than 200% of its original file size, or no more than 144" x 59". At a scale larger than 200%, the image will become bitmapped. If it is absolutely necessary to print the logo larger than 200%, the printed piece should be viewed from a distance of at least 20 feet. This will make the bitmapping less obvious. The logo should also not appear smaller than 15% of its original file size, or 11" x 4", as they are shown here. At less than 15% of its original file size, the details of the pins and shadows are lost.

Typography is a central element contributing to the visual voice for VPA. Three have been chosen to represent our organization: DIN 16, Miller and . DIN 16 is used to represent the VPA institutional voice in key identifying logotypes, mastheads, and signage. Miller is a very legible, workmanlike used for all supporting print typography. Georgia replaces Miller for all online uses.

DIN 16: institutional typeface_Din 16 is based on the industrial construction of DIN, but has rounded terminals that give it an appropriated sensibility. ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ 1234567890.,?!&@#*()

Specific values are applied to the signage, its typography is also derived from the pin grid. The letters letterspacing and wordpacing to keep the type feeling monospaced, like are always monospaced vertically and horizontally. The masthead is the pins. The College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University is committed to the education of cultural leaders who will engage and inspire audiences through performance, visual art, design, scholarship, and commentary. We provide the tools for self-discovery and risk-taking in an environment that thrives on critical thought and action. Miller: supporting typeface for all print applications_Miller Text and Display were designed by to revive 19th century typefaces created for use in newsprint. The has a workmanlike, accessible quality that recalls design of the vernacular. In the VPA brand, Miller should be used bravely; strong scale shifts and color breaks distinguish content. Heads and subheads are large and bold, distinguished by color breaks. Body copy contrasts against the heads with a sharp scale shift. Section breaks can be created by using thick rules above content, and attention can be drawn to specific content when it is underlined. The typography of any composition has an active, energetic voice. 21_College of Visual and Performing Arts visual guidelines Georgia: supporting typeface for all web applications_ Georgia, designed in 1993 by Matthew Carter, is a transitional typeface. Intended to be the serif companion to the first Microsoft sans serif screen font, Verdana, it is designed for clarity on a computer monitor even at small sizes. This is achieved in part by a relatively large x-height. Georgia should be handled in online applications in the same way that Miller is treated in print. Strong scale, weight, and color shifts should be used to define different hierarchies of content. 22_College of Visual and Performing Arts visual guidelines Image voice

The VPA image voice conveys important brand attributes: that we derive inspiration from the outside world, that we use art to assertively engage in the community around us, and that the performative nature of our work encourages dialogue.

Image voice _The images created to represent the brand can be used alone, or cropped and paired with other brand images to further emphasize that VPA engages with its surroundings. While our brand essence includes spontaneous engagement of image and subject, spontaneous use of branded imagery is not encouraged. The following are examples of the image style and content desired to express VPA. For questions regarding images (e.g. access to them and creation of new images), please contact Erica Blust, Director of Communications and Media Relations, [email protected].
