RICHARD PETTY | RANDLEMAN, NC >> COMING up NEXT ON RICHARD PETTY | RANDLEMAN, NC >> COMING UP NEXT ON "NORTH CAROLINA NOW," A SPECIAL "MY HOME NC" EDITION. WE PAY A ROYAL VISIT TO THE KING, NASCAR HALL OF FAMER RICHARD PETTY. WE SIT DOWN AND TALK ABOUT RACING HISTORY, LEGACY, AND HIS NORTH CAROLINA HOME. THAT'S ALL COMING UP NEXT. "NORTH CAROLINA NOW" IS MADE POSSIBLE THROUGH THE FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS OF VIEWERS LIKE YOU, WHO INVITE YOU TO JOIN THEM IN SUPPORTING UNC-TV. FUNDING FOR "MY HOME NC" IS PROVIDED IN PART BY THE TOM HOWE FUND FOR UNC-TV. >> WELCOME TO "NORTH CAROLINA NOW" FOR THIS SPECIAL "MY HOME NC" EDITION. I'M HEATHER BURGISS. WE'RE IN LEVEL CROSS AT THE PETTY MUSEUM, HOME PLACE, AND HISTORIC PETTY GARAGE FOR A VERY SPECIAL CONVERSATION WITH THE KING, RICHARD PETTY. WITH 200 WINS AND SEVEN CHAMPIONSHIPS, YOU WON'T FIND ANYONE WHO IS MORE ACCOMPLISHED IN NASCAR THAN THE KING. RICHARD PETTY SITS DOWN WITH US TO TALK ABOUT HIS CAREER, HIS FAMILY, AND WHY THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HIS NORTH CAROLINA HOME. >> WE GREW UP WITH A CAR IN THE BACKYARD INSTEAD OF A BARN AS FAR AS, YOU KNOW, BEING A FARMER. SO, BASICALLY, THAT'S ALL I KNEW. >> AND WE ARE JOINED BY THE LEGENDARY RICHARD PETTY. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING WITH US FOR "MY HOME NC." >> YES, MA'AM. THANK YOU FOR COMING. >> THANK YOU. RECENTLY, GOVERNOR PAT McCRORY SET ASIDE A DAY, RICHARD PETTY DAY, MARCH 31st. GIVEN YOUR NORTH CAROLINA ROOTS AND YOUR -- THIS IS YOUR HOME, DESCRIBE WHAT THAT FELT LIKE. TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT. >> WELL, IT WAS REALLY A GREAT HONOR. I MEAN, ALL THE PEOPLE THAT'S EVER BEEN IN NORTH CAROLINA, YOU KNOW, WE JUST HAPPENED TO GO OUT A LOT OR GO ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, ALL OVER THE WORLD. AND I DON'T THINK I CAN GO ANYWHERE THEY DON'T ASK WHERE ARE YOU FROM. SO YOU ALWAYS SAY NORTH CAROLINA. AND WE'RE VERY, VERY PROUD OF THAT. AND, YOU KNOW, THAT GIVES A LITTLE BIT OF ATTENTION BACK TO NORTH CAROLINA. >> WHEN YOU -- WE'RE HERE RIGHT IN LEVEL CROSS WHERE YOU GREW UP. NEXT DOOR IS THE HOUSE YOU WERE BORN IN. TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT GROWING UP IN LEVEL CROSS. WHAT WAS THAT LIKE? >> WELL, I GUESS IT WAS JUST COMMON DEAL AT THE TIME. YOU KNOW, LIVED ON A DIRT ROAD. DIDN'T HAVE ANY ELECTRICITY. DIDN'T ACTUALLY HAVE RUNNING WATER. BUT THE GUYS DOWN THE STREET DIDN'T HAVE IT EITHER, SO IT DIDN'T MAKE A WHOLE LOT OF DIFFERENCE. AND REALLY GOT THE -- WHEN DADDY STARTED RACING, THEN WE WENT OUT AND SEEN THAT THEY HAD HARD ROADS AND INDOOR PLUMBING AND ALL THAT STUFF. UH, YOU KNOW, IT WAS THE DEAL -- WE GREW UP IN THAT SOCIETY AND DIDN'T KNOW ANY DIFFERENT, SO WE WAS HAPPY AS JUNE BUGS. WE THOUGHT THE WHOLE WORLD WAS LIKE THAT. SO WE DIDN'T REALLY EXPAND ON NOT HAVING ANYTHING. AND SO, YOU KNOW, OVER A PERIOD OF TIME, WE WERE ABLE TO GO OUT AND SEE THE REAL WORLD AND BRING PART OF IT BACK HOME. >> WHAT WAS IT LIKE WATCHING YOUR DAD, THOSE EARLY YEARS WATCHING HIM RACE AND BUILD CARS, WHAT WAS THAT LIKE AS A YOUNG -- A YOUNG GUY? >> WELL, YOU KNOW, ALL THE PEOPLE THAT I WENT TO SCHOOL WITH, ALL THAT -- A LOT OF THEM WERE FARMERS, DAIRY -- IN THE DAIRY BUSINESS. I'D COME HOME AND WORK ON A RACE CAR. SO I WAS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT THAN THE REST OF THE CROWD. >> WHEN DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU WANTED TO MAKE RACING YOUR -- YOUR LIFE'S WORK? >> BASICALLY, THAT'S ALL I KNEW, AND I DON'T KNOW THAT I EVER THOUGHT ABOUT DOING IT. I JUST NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT DOING ANYTHING ELSE. AND, YOU KNOW, AS TIME PROGRESSED, MY FATHER WAS ABLE TO WIN RACES AND CHAMPIONSHIPS. AND THEN WHEN I GOT OLD ENOUGH -- AT THAT TIME I WAS WORKING ON THE RACE CAR. I NEVER REALLY THOUGHT THAT MUCH ABOUT DRIVING TILL I THINK I WAS PROBABLY 18 YEARS OLD OR SOMETHING WHEN I ASKED MY DAD, YOU KNOW, WHY CAN'T I START DRIVING. HE SAID, COME BACK WHEN YOU'RE 21. WE'LL TALK ABOUT IT. SO AFTER -- THAT'S THE WAY IT HAPPENED. >> YOU HAD SO MANY MEMORABLE RACES. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE RACE OR A FAVORITE MEMORY? >> YOU KNOW, IT'S HARD TO SAY. WE RAN OVER 1100 RACES AND LOST A BUNCH AND WON A BUNCH. PROBABLY THE 200th WIN WAS THE BIGGEST HULLABALOO AROUND. PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES WAS AT DAYTONA ON JULY THE 4th, AND WE WON OUR 200th RACE, AND WE WON IT ON THE LAST GREEN FLAG LAP. SO, YOU KNOW, IF YOU WAS DOING A SCRIPT, YOU WOULDN'T HAVE WROTE IT OUT QUITE THAT WAY, BECAUSE KIND OF AN UNBELIEVABLE SITUATION. >> CARS MIGHT BE LIKE CHILDREN TOO. BUT DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE CAR? YOU KNOW, EVERYBODY SAYS SOMETIMES THEY'RE ALL YOUR FAVORITES. >> I TELL THEM ANY OF THEM I COULD WIN IN WAS FAVORITES AT THAT TIME. AND, YOU KNOW, WE'VE GOT, I THINK, FIVE OF THE -- OR SIX OF THE DAYTONA 500 WINNERS. WON SEVEN TIMES. SO THOSE ARE REAL BIG MEMORIES, BECAUSE THAT WAS THE BIGGEST RACE OF THE YEAR. GOT US OFF TO A GOOD START, AND MOST TIME WE HAD GOOD YEARS WHEN THAT HAPPENED. SO I GUESS THEY WOULD HAVE TO BE ABOUT AS FAVORITE CAR AS HE HAD. THE DEAL WITH DAYTONA, WHEN IT FIRST STARTED, DARLINGTON WAS OUR BIGGEST RACE. BUT AFTER TWO OR THREE YEARS, DAYTONA GOT TO BE THE BIGGEST RACE BECAUSE WE'RE OFF. THERE'S NO RACING IN THE UNITED STATES FOR LIKE THREE MONTHS. AND EVERYBODY COMES TO DAYTONA. THEY'VE GOT NEW CARS, NEW SPONSORS, NEW DRIVERS. EVERYTHING'S BRAND-NEW. INSTEAD OF HAVING SUPER BOWL AT THE END OF THE YEAR, WE HAVE OUR SUPER BOWL AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR. AND ONE THING ABOUT DAYTONA, WHICH WE WAS FORTUNATE TO WIN A BUNCH OF TIMES, IS THAT YOU WIN DAYTONA AND YOU'RE A WINNER ALL YEAR LONG. IN OTHER WORDS, EVERYWHERE YOU GO, THEY INTRODUCE YOU AS THE DAYTONA CHAMPION. AND SO OF ALL THE THINGS, I GUESS, OR ANY ONE TRACK, DAYTONA WAS A BIG BOOST IN RICHARD PETTY'S CAREER, BECAUSE HE WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO WIN SOME RACES. AND, AGAIN, IT MADE ME A WINNER ALL -- ALL -- DIDN'T HAVE TO WIN ANOTHER RACE ALL YEAR LONG, AND YOU'RE STILL A WINNER. >> YOU ARE STATISTICALLY THE MOST ACCOMPLISHED DRIVER IN NASCAR HISTORY. WHAT DID YOU DO TO KIND OF TWEAK AND GET BETTER EACH RACE? WHAT KIND OF THINGS DID YOU DO? >> YOU KNOW, I GUESS WHEN WE WAS GOING ALONG AND DOING ALL THIS, YOU NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT RECORDS OR -- OR ANY OF THAT KIND OF STUFF. YOU JUST SAID, OKAY, WE'VE GOT TO DO BETTER THIS COMING WEEK THAN WE'VE DONE THIS PAST WEEK, OR IF WE WON, WE'VE GOT TO GO BACK AND WIN IT AGAIN, BECAUSE EVERYTHING THAT -- YOU KNOW, THAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY IS HISTORY. SO WE HAD TO RE -- REINVENT OURSELF AND REINVENT EVERYTHING EVERY RACE, EVERY SEASON. AND I THINK THAT'S WHAT KEPT US GOING, KEPT US AHEAD OF THINGS. >> YOU HAD SOME MEMORABLE CRASHES. ONES I KNOW YOU WANT TO FORGET. HOW DO YOU -- HOW DO YOU GET BACK IN A RACE CAR AFTER GOING THROUGH SOMETHING LIKE THAT? >> YOU KNOW, I HAD -- >> HOW DID LYNDA LET YOU GET BACK IN A RACE CAR? >> -- YOU KNOW, CONCUSSIONS. THEY BROKE MY NECK A COUPLE TIMES. BROKE ALL THE RIBS. BROKE LEGS, FEET. AND THE FIRST THING I'D ASK THE DOCTOR WHEN HE COME IN, WHEN CAN I GET BACK IN THE RACE CAR? AND HE'D COMMENT, THREE OR FOUR WEEKS. I SAID, OKAY. BY SUNDAY I'LL BE OKAY. AND, YOU KNOW, THE SITUATION'S A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT NOW. I THINK NASCAR, EVERYBODY'S MORE ON THE SAFETY DEAL. I RODE A BUNCH OF RACES THAT NASCAR WOULDN'T EVEN LET ME IN THE RACETRACK IN NOW. BUT THEN THEY JUST SAID, YOU KNOW, WHATEVER. AND YOU'VE GOT TO FIGURE, WE WERE DOING IT FOR A LIVING. WE DIDN'T HAVE SPONSORS AND STUFF LIKE THAT. SO WE DIDN'T SHOW UP AT A RACE AND DO GOOD, THEN MADE IT A LITTLE BIT TOUGHER TO GET TO THE NEXT RACE. SO IT WAS -- YOU DID IT BECAUSE YOU HAD TO, BUT THE MAIN DEAL IS YOU WANTED TO. >> I THINK ABOUT LYNDA. WHAT -- HOW DID SHE FEEL WHEN YOU WOULD GO OUT THERE AND RACE EVERY -- EVERY WEEK? >> YOU KNOW, SHE HAD MIXED EMOTIONS, I KNOW, FROM THE STANDPOINT THAT HER FAVORITE DEAL WAS, YOU KNOW, ARE WE HAVING FUN, YOU KNOW, DOING IT. I MEAN, I'D GET HURT, AND SHE'D COME IN LOOKING AT ME LAYING THERE ON A STRETCHER OR SOMETHING. SHE SAID, ARE WE HAVING FUN? AND I SAID, WELL, NOT RIGHT AT THE MINUTE. GIVE ME ABOUT 15 MINUTES, AND I'LL BE OKAY. >> I'LL BE BETTER. WHAT WAS IT LIKE RAISING A FAMILY DURING THE HEIGHT OF YOUR NASCAR CAREER? WHAT WAS THAT LIKE? >> YOU KNOW, TO US, IT WAS NORMAL. I WAS RAISED IN A RACING FAMILY. AND, YOU KNOW, RACING WAS THE DAILY DEAL. WHEN WE GOT MARRIED AND WE HAD KIDS AND STUFF, THEN, YOU KNOW, IT WAS A GOOD -- A GOOD RELATIONSHIP.

  • Racing Royalty Has No Intention of Slowing Down AUTOWEEK CATCHES up with RACING GREAT JUNE 9, 2017
Mario Andretti is still loving his role as a racing ambassador at age 77. PHOTO BY CHRIS OWENS Mario Andretti: Racing royalty has no intention of slowing down AUTOWEEK CATCHES UP WITH RACING GREAT JUNE 9, 2017 Mario Andretti … the name rolls off the tongue, like that of royalty. Which, essentially, he is. More than two decades after retiring from a decorated racing career, Andretti remains Super Mario. Like Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan and a handful of others, his name rings bells beyond the boundaries of the sports world and is a global franchise that carries the positive weight of a lifetime of success. Andretti will be 78 in February, yet he is one of the youngest of a generation of superstars who survived some of the deadliest years in the history of auto racing. Those still rolling along in retirement include A.J. Foyt, Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, Bobby Allison, Johnny Rutherford and David Pearson — all older than Andretti. Of the all-time greats, Andretti and Petty remain the most active and most visible. Petty, winner of 200 NASCAR Cup races, has been stock-car racing’s No. 1 ambassador since his early driving days almost 60 years ago. An icon of the sports world, he continues to attend almost every Cup race as part-owner of a Ford team and remains a favorite — and willing — target of autograph-seekers. A contemporary of Petty’s (although their paths seldom crossed in competition), Andretti built a bigger platform on the world stage, winning in IndyCar, Formula 1, sports cars and stock cars.

  • Final Project Paper
Schneider 1 Gordon College Seek the Truth: How NASCAR and the Media Mishandled the Talladega Noose Investigation Benjamin Schneider Dr. Gardner COM 491 2 December 2020 Schneider 2 Sonja K. Foss’ book Rhetorical Criticism outlines several different methods of application for media criticism. While all of these methods have their own merits to them, Foss acknowledges that the best way to engage in rhetorical criticism, particularly for “seasoned rhetorical critics” (411), is through no single formal method of criticism. This method is called “generative criticism,” where the writer builds a more general explanation of the artifact rather than following a previously developed method of criticism. This project will employ generative criticism to analyze the events that led up to the noose investigation in NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace’s garage stall at Talladega Superspeedway in June 2020, how both mainstream and alternative media covered the story, how almost every single outlet and media member got some part of the story wrong (whether it be entirely through their own negligence or with the help of a hastily released statement by NASCAR the night of the original report), and how the failure to get the story right proved detrimental to NASCAR, the credibility of the media, and, through no fault of his own, the public reputation Wallace himself. On May 25, 2020, George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police while being arrested for allegedly using a counterfeit bill. Video showed officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck for several minutes, while Floyd pleaded “I can’t breathe” before succumbing to the brutality (Brooks).

This is Dan Pierce talking to Mr. Richard Petty in his office at Level Cross, N.C. Richard Petty (RP): I feel like Clinton…where’s the TV Dan Pierce (DP): (laughing) RP: Sorry ‘bout that guys, had to throw that in. DP: No, that’s fine, that’s fine. I wanna try to ask you some questions that haven’t answered five hundred times. Some of them you may have, but the focus of what I’m talking about is; what’s Southern and what’s not about . I wanted to ask you first if you could comment on the importance to you, in your racing and personal life, of family, which seems to be an especially big issue with you and with in general. Starting really back, I guess at the beginning, with your dad and you’re early involvement with racing. RP: When my Dad first started running, he ran the very first race at Charlotte. He won the Grand National, which is Winston Cup now, in 1949. At that time it was my mother, my daddy, my brother and myself and that was our family. They started in the racing business and Mother kept all the books and kept all the money straight and Daddy done all the work around the race course. And as my brother and myself grew up, naturally we started working around the race course. We started changing oils and washing the thing and then it just got bigger and bigger and bigger. As we went along it got big enough that they could afford to hire somebody to help.
