Major Sound for a Major Speedway

When Michigan International Speedway held its first race in October 1968, its 12,000-seat grandstand made it one of the top new racetracks in the U.S. For more than four decades, this two-mile oval has hosted countless historic races, its Victory Circle graced by such famous names as Richard Petty, A.J. Foyt, , Parnelli Jones and . Today, MIS seats more than 119,500 fans and is still one of the nation's premier racing venues, thanks in no small part to an ongoing program of improvements and upgrades over the years. Most recently, the track's original sound system was completely revamped, and its 1960s-vintage horns were replaced with more than 200 Community R-Series weather-resistant loudspeakers.

The project involved replacing nearly all of the Speedway's existing loudspeakers, except for eight Community R2-474 loudspeakers that were installed back in 2000. Those were the only loudspeakers that stayed because they were still in great shape, despite having been outside 365 days a year through ten Michigan winters. The grandstand seating is now covered by 77 Community R2-94Z loudspeakers and 59 R.5 loudspeakers while turns three and four received another 40 R.5HPT systems. The fan walk areas were outfitted with 10 R2-94Z loudspeakers, and 16 R.25-94TZ loudspeakers welcome the fans at the entrance gates. In addition to the new grandstand loudspeakers, a total of 57 Community R.5HPT’s were added to the track's Infield Perimeter, each mounted atop 20-foot steel poles. R-Series systems continue to provide race tracks with powerful full-range music coverage and intelligibility with reliable service year after year!

Classic Church Finds its Voice with ENTASYS

St. Mary's Catholic Church is one of the oldest parishes in the Archdiocese of Portland, Oregon and certainly one of the most beautiful and majestic in the state. Completed in 1912, the 200- foot bell tower dominates the local countryside and the church’s multi-angled vaulted ceilings, ornate stained glass windows, intricately stenciled walls and cruciform Gothic Revival architecture are simply magnificent. However that magnificent architecture creates a challenging environment for any acoustical designer.

While ideal for choral and instrumental music, spoken word intelligibility was near impossible. A of loudspeaker systems were implemented over the years with little success. The solution was found in a distributed system of ten ENTASYS Column Line-Array loudspeakers. Two pairs of ENTASYS full- range loudspeakers cover the front and side wings, while three more pairs mounted further back cover rear delay. A pair of VLF208W subwoofers provides the system with balanced low end reinforcement. Aesthetics were just as important as the systems performance and the ENTASYS loudspeakers completely disappeared into the columns they were mounted on. The sound quality, performance and look of the ENTASYS system exceeded everyone’s expectations and the congregation could not be happier.

Putting On the Ritz!

Listed in the Theatre Historical Society of America, the Ritz Theatre located in Hinton, West Virginia first opened its doors in 1929 as an opera house. The new system features a pair of Community SLS920 loudspeakers covering the main seating area, with the all-important low frequency component provided by an SBS45 subwoofer in front of the stage. Two additional Community iBOX Series i2W8 loudspeakers provide front fill coverage. The new system provides seamless coverage throughout the entire venue and when the new owners first heard the system they were grinning from ear to ear! Since reopening, the Ritz has received overwhelming support from the local community.
