BIBLIOGRAPHY OF T'dE PUBLICATIONS OF J. C. J U T A and J. C. J U T A & Co. 1853-1903 by A.B. Caine and L. Leipoldt. University of Cape Town School of Librarianship University of Cape Town. 1954. PREFACE This is not a comprehensive bibliography of Juta publications for the period 1853 to 1903; indeed we doubt whether it is a complete record of the publica- tions to be found in Cape Town - and no attempt has been made to trace publications in other centres. Certain sources in Cape To~m have not been investigated at all - for example, advertisements in newspapers were not sought for beyond 188 3 and then the search was confined to four newspapers, published in Cape Town. A check on some1the advertisements thus found revealed that Juta's hardly advertised at all in the Eastern province during this period, but a similar check on the Dutch papers originating in Cape Town held more promise. But these researches were abandoned in favour of the more fruitful fields of African.a collections and periodicals of the time. Reviews, and to a lesser extent advertisements, proved to be a trying source of information as there was often no clear distinction made between the bookselling and book-publishing functions of local firms. Many items described "To be had of Mr. Juta'' or "To be had of all booksellers'' have been omitted from this biblio graphyy as there was so little evidence that they had actually been published by Juta' s. Examples of such advertisements will be found in this bibliography in supplement A; there are others such as item 117 which would also have been better placed in Supplement A. iii. -------Arrangement.. The bibliography has b een arranged in broad subject order ( shown in the list of contents) with an alphabetic index to facilitate reference to sp ecific items. Supplement A covers items which we felt might have been published by Juta's but which we had not traced elsewhere and therefore had no confirmation that they had actually been published or that they had been published under the Juta imprint. Supplement B covers publications which had been inadvertently omitted from the main body of the bibliography or which were discovered after the relative section had been typed. A chronological index has been added in view of the interest evoked by the Juta centenary in 1953. Ma~. Maps bearing the Juta imprint were extremely difficult to find and none were found in the map collections of the Jagger Library (Geography Dep artment) .. 1 or the South African public Library desp ite a very careful search. Few of the works recorded here were examined other than those which had not yet been classified in the libraries to which we had access. Location marks have .I. been added wherever these were available in order to facilitate access to users of this bibliography. The ,r mark of the library most readily accessible to the public has been selected. Finally we wish to acknowledge with many thanks the assistance we received from the Librarians and Staffs of the follo~~ng libraries: .I. iv. The J. w. Jagg er Library; The Library of Parliament; The provincial Administration Education Department Library; ,. The South African Public Library; The supreme Court Library. we also wish to thank Mr. R.F. Immelman allowing us to enjoy the facilities of his private library. A.B. Caine L. Leipoldt. Cape Town, January, 1954. v. C O N T E N T S. Pref'ace ii - iv. Sources Consulted vi - vii.
