2016 Brampton Junior Cashspiel Rules General Rules All brooms used at the event this year must be compliant with the World Curling Federation (WCF) specifications, as defined at http://www.worldcurling.org/brushes on the “WCF Approved Code List” o Teams using non-compliant brooms will forfeit the game being played All curlers must be of OCA Junior eligibility age or of legal junior age in your country All games are scheduled for 8 ends and a team must concede when it is mathematically impossible to win the game In the event of a tied score after 8 ends a full extra end towards the glass will be played All games will have a winner If a team requires a spare, they may bring their own. They cannot use a person who has played as, a regular, for another team in this year’s event Teams that are late for their game’s start time (start time is considered to be the later of the scheduled start time and the time when their ice becomes available for play) will be penalized as follows: o 1 point, 1 end and loss of hammer after 5 minutes o another point and 1 end for every 15 minutes after that o forfeit of game after 1 hour and 5 minutes o Team may not be eligible to move forward into the playoffs Teams that have a BYE will be permitted to use the scheduled ice for practice during the game’s allocated time (women’s draw only) Officials have the right to enforce or modify any rules as necessary in the interests of fair play. In the event of a dispute, the event committee will make a final decision and their decision will be final Time outs Each team will be allowed 2 time outs during the game where coaches can access the arena (not the playing surface). Each time out will be 1.5 minutes and will be timed by the coaches themselves. The time out will begin when it is called from the ice surface Chairs will be provided, at the glass, in the lower lounge for coaches so that they may have timely access to the arena. Coaches who choose to sit in the upper lounge do so at their own comfort level – no extra time for the time outs will be allocated Committee members will monitor the duration of the time outs and any abuse of the honour system will be brought to the attention of those involved Determining Playoff Rankings – Women’s Draw Any team that forfeits or defaults a game will not be eligible to move forward into the playoffs – at the sole discretion of the BJCS committee 6 playoff positions are determined as follows: o The top 1 team from each pool will get a BYE into the semi-finals (2 teams) o The 2nd and 3rd place teams in each pool will qualify for the quarter-finals (4 teams) o Remaining teams will not advance to the playoffs At the conclusion of the round robin, if any pool has two or more teams with the same win/loss record, the tie will be broken as follows: o First, the winner of the head-to-head match(es) will be considered, if this provides a clear ranking. o Next, the shoot out scores will be used to determine final ranks o Finally, if none of the above provide a clear ranking, one or more additional rounds of shoot outs will be played by the tied teams until a clear winner is determined Determining Playoff Rankings – Men’s Draw Any team that forfeits or defaults a game will not be eligible to move forward into the playoffs – at the sole discretion of the BJCS committee 8 playoff positions are determined as follows: o The top 2 teams from each pool will qualify for the quarter-finals (6 teams) o The third place teams in each pool will get a total 2 ‘wildcard’ playoff spots between the 3 teams. This will be determined solely by the shoot out scores of each team (2 teams) . If there is a tie, one or more additional rounds of shoot outs will be played by the tied teams until a clear winner is determined o Remaining teams will not advance to the playoffs At the conclusion of the round robin, if any pool has two or more teams with the same win/loss record, the tie will be broken as follows: o First, the winner of the head-to-head match(es) will be considered, if this provides a clear ranking. o Next, the shoot out scores will be used to determine final ranks o Finally, if none of the above provide a clear ranking, one or more additional rounds of shoot outs will be played by the tied teams until a clear winner is determined Shoot Out Hammer in the first end will be determined by a draw to the button and MAY be used to determine which team(s) will advance to the playoffs Before each game teams will toss a coin for choice of rocks and first to throw OR choice of side of sheet for the draw to button and of course will go out second to throw. We are implementing this to ensure both sides of the sheet are played during the pregame draw. Teams will be allowed 3 opportunities to draw*. The first 2 will be deemed as ‘practice’ the third as the actual draw for the hammer that will be measured by the throwing team and witnessed by the opposition team** Teams will be allowed 5 minutes to complete the draw for hammer. Failure to have the rock cross the nearer ‘T’ line before 5 minutes will result in the team being awarded 184 cm * A team does not necessarily have to use the practice shot(s) but must declare their intention to a committee member before delivering the rock to be measured ** The opposition may elect to not ‘witness’ the measurement but must indicate their intention to a committee member prior to the opposition teams starting The shot will be thrown toward the glass and will be measured and recorded as the distance from the ‘pin’ in cms. Rocks not in the rings will be recorded as the maximum measurement (184 cm). Rocks covering the ‘pin’ will be recorded as 0 Any team member may make the draw Sweeping is allowed by the throwing team Coaches are not permitted on the playing surface during the draw and will have no input A rock that is moved by a team player prior to the measure will be assigned the distance to the next defined circle away from the button Distance from the ‘pin’ will be measured and recorded on the ‘score cards’ Failure to record your measurement on the score card and submit it to a committee member will result in the team having the maximum distance (184 cm) recorded as their measurement The measurements from the draw for hammer will be totaled from all team round robin games to be used as a ‘shoot out’ score for tie breaking situations and/or to select which teams advance to the playoffs – if required In the event of a ‘tie’ in the draw for hammer (i.e. both teams cover the ‘pin’ or are not in the house) then the hammer will be decided by a coin toss Conduct It is expected that every player and coach will conduct themselves in a respectful, dignified manner UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT will not be tolerated - there will be no further warnings Unsportsmanlike conduct includes (but is not limited to): - Excessive banging of brooms/brushes - Aggressive pushing of rocks to the boards (or elsewhere) - Foul language - Intimidation or harassment - Disrespect to a committee member or official - Damage to the building or contents - Anything that compromises the safety of other curlers - These rules will be strictly enforced – at the discretion of the committee member/official any contravention of the rules will result in the immediate expulsion of the player from the current game. Further action will be determined by the committee and their decision will be final.
