SCIENCE COMES ALIVE! This week, our Vikings in grade 9 STEP Science were studying the effects of varying the amount of baking soda added to vinegar on the amount of carbon dioxide produced. They collected the carbon dioxide in a balloon and measured its circumference and then digitally graphed their results. LOCKERBY THE SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION PROGRAM | AP CAPSTONE | FRENCH IMMERSION LOCKERBY COMPOSITE SCHOOL NEWS UPDATE February 15 - 19, 2021 THE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN PROCESS By Josh M.: In Mr. Smith's grade 10 Technological Design class, we have been learning many important things such as how to do bubble diagrams, basic house drawings, to scale house drawings, and how to use AutoCad. The bubble diagrams help us in the early stage of design because it is easy to make and it does not take it very long to make. Drawing scale diagrams is a very important skill because it will help you draw something small and possibly make it in real life with your drawing. Lastly, AutoCad helps with more than one type of design which will be good for all of the aspiring architects out there! HEALTHY ACTIVE LIVING Nothing new to see here...just Mr. Abols’ Outdoor Education class making the most of the nice, sunny weather at the school! STUDENT COUNCIL - MASKED DJ! The first reveal of Lockerby Masked DJ happened this past Tuesday! Our very own Viking staff is now providing the morning music and clue packages throughout the week for the student body to figure out who the weekly mystery DJ is. Every Friday, homeroom classes are entering their guesses for a chance to win a semester ending prize. Last week's Masked DJ was...Mr. Smith! SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION PROGRAM | AP CAPSTONE | FRENCH IMMERSION PAGE - 2 - LOCKERBY COMPOSITE SCHOOL NEWS UPDATE February 15 - 19, 2021 MURDER MYSTERIES This week in our Medical Technologies class, our senior Viking led their classmates through a murder mystery activity, where their peers had a chance to identify anatomical positions, body cavities, and body regions at crime scenes! Students also participated in the highly anticipated anatomical BINGO game on Friday! VIKING ATHLETICS UPDATE With the province-wide lockdown and Stay-At- Home Order being lifted on Tuesday, Public Health Sudbury and District has given the green- light to resume components of the high school sporting season. Our Vikings are back in action! The following teams will be returning to train and competition next week: Junior and Senior Girls Volleyball (Mr. Beausoleil) Nordic Skiing (Mr. Abols & Mme Stanyon) Curling We're (Ms. Augenstein) Boys Basketball - return to train only on Tuesday & Thursday from 2:30pm - 4:15pm (Mr. Binks) Back! The Nordic Ski team is back in action preparing for their Preliminary Race on Thursday, February 25th, 2021 at Windy Lake. Practices continue every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday right after school. All information will be shared through the Google Classroom. Best of luck Vikings! CONGRATULATIONS MS. AUGENSTEIN! The Viking Community would like to congratulate Ms. Augenstein on winning the Pete Beach NOSSA Award this year! The Pete Beach Award is given to aneducator who consistently provides an impression of stability and optimism, one who enjoys the company, and the respect, of young people; one who embodies, and initiates by example, the highest traditions of the sportsperson; one who best typifies the true function of the teacher-coach - a source of discipline, a mentor, and a friend. We hope that your second week of classes was just as exciting as the first! We’ve seen so much school spirit in the last few weeks with our Valentine’s spirit week and all of our new courses. We’re happy to offer you a chance on all of that action. You can join in on the Viking spirit by buying your very own Cancer Drive mask. They are, in fact, still for sale for only $12 on School Cash Online. We hope to see you all sporting your very own Cancer Drive mask next week to keep up with all of this school spirit! Stay tuned next month for information regarding our Cancer Drive fundraising which will run through the whole month of April. How to donate to Lockerby’s Kids Caring for Kids Cancer Drive through the Northern Cancer Foundation (NCF): As you all know, all profits made from the Cancer Drive are donated to the pediatric unit of NCF. Despite this year’s challenges, we are still trying to reach our goal of $1 million donated over the past 25 years to NCF and we appreciate every penny our Viking and Sudbury community has donated to this wonderful cause. If you would like to donate, follow the steps below. Open the website www.ncfsudbury.com into your browser. Scroll down and click the green button that says “Donate Now." Scroll down and click the green button that says “Donate Now” under the label “Lockerby Cancer Drive." Enter the amount you wish to donate and proceed with your online donation. SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION PROGRAM | AP CAPSTONE | FRENCH IMMERSION PAGE - 5 - LOCKERBY COMPOSITE SCHOOL NEWS UPDATE February 15 - 19, 2021 STUDENT SERVICES Post-Secondary Applications Marks have been sent to Ontario colleges and universities. Students are asked to check their OCAS and OUAC accounts to ensure that all of their courses and marks have been transferred. Students should also be checking their individual post-secondary portals (i.e., Cambrian College and/or Laurentian University). Many of the schools have been providing details regarding additional requirements, incomplete applications, etc. Students must ensure that all of the necessary details for their application are complete. If you have any concerns please speak to Mrs. Beaudry or Ms. Baggs in Student Services. LOCKERBY ALUMNAE AT THE SCOTTIES Good luck to Team Northern Ontario, who will be competing at this year's Scotties Tournament of Hearts! The team consists of two former Vikings, Sara Guy (far left) and Kira Brunton (not pictured). The other provinces competing will certainly be 'fearing the moose!' Alumna Tracy Horgan and her Manitoba rink also qualified! BREAKFAST CLUB UPDATE Breakfast Club will now take place every weekday morning in the Food Rooms!
