Enrique Zuazua, Eibar, Basque Country Enrique Zuazua, Eibar, Basque Country – Spain, 1961, is a Disntiguished Research Professor at Ikerbasque, the Basque Foundation for Science in BCAM - Basque Center for Applied Mathematics that he founded in 2008 as Scientific Director. He is also Professor-in-leave of Applied Mathematics at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM). He is also an honorary member of Jakiunde, the Basque Academy of Sciences, Letters and Humanities. He holds a degree in mathematics from the University of the Basque Country, and a dual PhD degree from the same university (1987) and from the "Université Pierre et Marie Curie" in Paris (1988). In 1990 he became Professor of Applied Mathematics at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. In 2001 he moved to the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. He has been awarded the Euskadi (Basque Country) Prize for Science and Technology 2006 and the National Julio Rey Pastor Prize 2007 in Mathematics and Information and Communication Technology, the Advanced Grant NUMERIWAVES of the ERC in 2010, and more recently the best article prize of Annales de l'Institut Henri Poincaré for the year 2008 (joint with Th. Duyckaerts and X. Zhang). With over 200 articles published, his work has had an important impact and he was recognized as a “Highly Cited Researcher" by the ISI Institute (Thomson) in 2004, also he has supervised 21 postdoctoral researchers and 25 PhD students. His fields of expertise in the area of Applied Mathematics cover topics related with Partial Differential Equations, Systems Control and Numerical Analysis. He is the editor-in-chief of “ESAIM:COCV" and member of the editorial committee of other Journals and of scientific committees of various centres and agencies. In the fall semester of 2013-2014 he was a visiting Professor of the “Laboratoire Jacques-Louis Lions” of the “Université Pierre et Marie Curie” with the support of the Paris City Hall. In the spring semester of 2013-2014 he hold a CIMI Chair at the CIMI – Centre International de Mathématiques et Informatique of Toulouse. He received the 2013 Humboldt Research Award and he is a Visiting professor of the University of Reading in the United Kingdom. Since September 2009 he runs, in cooperation with the journalist Xabier Lapitz a Radio Program at Onda Vasca on various topics related to Mathematics, Higher Education and Research. He is also the author of the columns "Matemanías" and "con-CIENCIA" at the basque dayly newspaper Deia and the weekly one Zazpika-Gara. .

Bilbao, September 3, 2014 Enrique ZUAZUA Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Lorraine, France Ø The award ceremony will be on October 9th, 2014 at Nancy, France Enrique ZUAZUA (Eibar, Basque Country, 1961), Full Professor of Applied Mathematics at the UAM-Autonomous University of Madrid, Ikerbasque Researcher and Founding Scientific Director of BCAM-Basque Center for Applied Mathematics, Bilbao, has received the degree and title of Doctor Honoris Causa at the University of Lorraine, France, for the relevance of his scientific contributions and his long lasting and fruitful collaboration with the Institute of Mathematics Élie Cartan of that institution, leaded by Professor Marius TUCSNAK. The ceremony for the honorary award will take place on October 9th in the historic city of Nancy in the French northeast, from hands of Professor Pierre MUTZENHARDT, President of the University. The inaugural address of the awarded is entitled "Mathematics: A window to the future." The University of Lorraine was established in 201, as the merging of various academic institutions in the region (Metz and Nancy cities) and has a strong mathematical tradition. The large time decay rates of a transmission problem coupling heat and wave equations on a planar network is discussed. When all edges evolve according to the heat equation, the uniform expo- nential decay holds. By the contrary, we show the lack of uniform stability, based on a Geometric Optics high frequency asymptotic expansion, whenever the network involves at least one wave equation. The (slow) decay rate of this system is further discussed for star-shaped networks. When only one wave equation is present in the network, by the frequency domain approach together with multipliers, we derive a sharp poly- nomial decay rate. When the network involves more than one wave equation, a weakened observability estimate is obtained, based on which, polynomial and logarithmic decay rates are deduced for smooth initial conditions under certain irrationality conditions on the lengths of the strings entering in the network. These decay rates are intrinsically determined by the wave equations entering in the system and are independent on the heat equations. 1. Introduction.     Introducing FAU Ambassador Prof. Dr. Enrique Zuazua Prof. Dr. Enrique Zuazua is one of the leading minds in the field of applied mathematics, currently Professor of Applied Mathematics at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. He has garnered numerous important national and international awards and has a broad network of scientific contacts and collaborators around the world. This year, he also joined Academia Europaea. On November 4, 2015, he was formally appointed as FAU Ambassador - the first in a series of visiting international researchers who will take on this voluntary position in the coming years. FAU Ambassadors represent the University in their home country and communicate about their experiences at FAU in their scientific community. They can advise students and researchers who are interested in a stay in Erlangen-Nürnberg and foster relations between universities at home and FAU. As a visiting professor, Zuazua has taught and conducted research in, among others, the USA, Brazil and Cambridge and at various French universities. One of his most proud achievements is to have mentored 23 PhD students that now run fruitful academic careers all around the world. Prof. Dr. Zuazua, why did you decide to take on the role of FAU Ambassador and what do you see as your main objectives in this role? I have been collaborating scientifically with Professor Günter Leugering for many years. When he joined FAU this led naturally to collaboration with his team, Department and FAU University. I had the honour to be a Humboldt Research Awardee at FAU in the academic year 2014-2015. This was a fruitful academic period and a very rewarding one for my family and me.
