Horton 2018 ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION REBOOTING MASCULINITY AFTER 9/11: MALE HEROISM ON FILM FROM BUSH TO TRUMP Conceptions of masculinity on film shifted after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks from representations of male heroism as invulnerable, powerful, and safe to representations of male heroism as resilient, vengeful, and vulnerable. At the same time, the antagonists of these films shifted towards representations as shadowy, unknowable, and disembodied. These changing representations, I argue, are windows into the anxieties Americans faced in the aftermath of the attacks. The continuing presentation of power as linked to violence, however, illustrates the ways in which conceptions of masculinity have stayed the same. In a bid to escape exile in Crete, Icarus uses wings made from wax and feathers made by his father, the Athenian master craftsman Daedalus. But the sin of hubris causes him to pay no heed to his father’s warnings. He fl ies too close to the sun, so burning his wings, and falls into the Tsea and drowns. The parable is often used to highlight the perils of pride and the reckless, impulsive behaviour that it fosters. The frontier nature of celebrity culture perpetuates and enlarges narcissistic characteristics in stars and stargazers. Impulsive behaviour and recklessness are commonplace. They fi gure prominently in the entertainment pages and gossip columns of newspapers and magazines, prompting commentators to conjecture about the contagious effects of celebrity culture upon personal health and the social fabric. Do celebrities sometimes get too big for their boots and get involved in social and political issues that are beyond their competence? Can one posit an Icarus complex in some types of celebrity behaviour? This chapter addresses these questions by examining celanthropy and its discontents (notably Madonna’s controversial adoption of two Malawi children); celebrity health advice (Tom Cruise and Scientology); and celebrity pranks (the Sachsgate phone calls involving Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross).

KLEPARSKI, Magorzata MARTYNUSKA THE IMAGE OF POLICE OFFICER AS EMERGING FROM ROAD MOVIES AND ROAD LINGO Road movies: The roots of the genre American society holds many things to be dear – indeed one might say that, becoming to such a heterogenous notion these notions are equally varied. However, one might define a number of values which are commonly held to be of great importance to America as a whole, such as mobility, independence, fairness, individualism, freedom, determination and courage. These values are best encapsulated in the film genre known as ‘road movies’, through which Hollywood has sought to celebrate the very nature of Americanness. The purpose set to the pages that follow is to outline the concept of freedom as the guiding force of the characters in the road movies and – in particular – the role and the concept of POLICE OFFICER who either turns out to be a constraint on freedom or – on rare occasions – its facilitator. The second part of the paper concerns the trucker language, and – more specifically – the picture of the POLICE OFFICER in the language of CB radio. In particular, we shall analyse the linguistic mechanisms involved in shaping the concept discussed; that is the working of the devices of zoosemy and metonymy. From the very outset, it can be observed that right from the very origins of settlement in the New World, the first Americans were always connected – in some way – with the road and the concept of travelling.1 The early settlers were pioneers wandering westwards; crossing wide stretches of land, constantly on the move in search of a place to live.

Director’s Statement This is the story of fighter pilot, Major Tommy Egan, who has been flying F-16’s in Iraq and Afghanistan. He is still flying missions in that part of the world but now he is doing it from the inside of a very different Cockpit. He is a drone pilot, fighting the war by remote Control from an air-conditioned cubicle 7,000 miles away on a base near Las Vegas. It’s about the new schizophrenia of war. After fighting the Taliban for 12 hours a day, Tommy goes home to the suburbs to feud with his wife and kids for the other 12.
