NewZealand Iowa State University - Semester Options

Study Abroad on an Island Paradise

"New Zealand is a country of rare seismic beauty: glacial mountains, fast-flowing rivers, deep clear lakes, hissing geysers and boiling mud. There are also abundant native forests, long deserted beaches and a variety of fauna, such as the kiwi, endemic to its shores.

Any number of vigorous outdoor activities - tramping (hiking), skiing and rafting await the adventurous. You can swim with dolphins, gambol with newborn lambs, whale-watch or fish for fattened trout in pristine streams and rivers.

New Zealand isn't all caves, glaciers and geysers, though its natural marvels are epic in scope and you'd be mad not to sample at least some of them. On our way between albatross colonies and fjords check out the pleasures of its cities, which combine big-town cool with small-town charm."

There are eight universities in New Zealand and, due to government legislation, this is the maximum number of universities allowed within the country. The United States Department of Education recognizes all eight universities as outstanding institutions for study abroad.

The University of Otago in Dunedin is New Zealand's oldest university and the South Island's largest employer. Founded in 1869, the university opened in July 1871. Its motto is "Sapere aude" ("Dare to be wise"). The University of Otago Students' Association answers this with its own motto "Audeamus" ("Let us dare"). The University is know throughout the country for its unique student lifestyle and particularly its flatting (apartment) culture, where students generally share housing units with a unique name and "character building" domestic life. Otago graduates are known to be among the most dispersed alumni in the world, with many graduates ultimately settling in Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, China, India, Sri Lanka, Japan or elsewhere in New Zealand.

Massey University was founded in 1927 as Massey University Agricultural College. Massey takes its name from William Massey, a former New Zealand Prime Minister. The University has two campuses in Palmerston North (Turitea and ), one in Wellington (Te Aro), and one in Albany on Auckland's North Shore. The Turitea campus in Palmerston North is the original location and the sole campus of Massey University for many years. Recently, Massey expanded by merging with Palmerston North Teachers College (now the Hokowhitu campus), Wellington Polytechnic (also purchasing the former Buckle Street Museum in Wellington), and by building a new campus in

Dear Traveler,

Welcome to New Zealand's largest city - Auckland. Your study abroad option here is Massay University. Particularly good options here include business and engineering courses.

Auckland, a city of approximately 2 million and the the economic heart of the country.

4 5 Massey University - Auckland Campus is the newest of the three Massey University campuses and is located in a suburb of New Zealand's largest city. 7 Dear Traveler,

Welcome to Palmerston North, home to the main campus of Massey University. A young person's city with a beautiful campus, live theatre, great cafes, cool shops and over 80 student clubs.

You'll feel right at home in this city of 75,000 which is close to beaches, the capital of New Zealand, and stunning scenery.

8 The Palmerston North Campus of Massey University will remind you of Iowa State. Both began with a focus on agriculture and have a campus with extensive green space, a lake and even some swans. Like Ames, Palmerston North is a real college town. 10 11 Dear Traveler,

Wellington is the capital of New Zealand and is located on the southerly tip of the North Island.

It is a small, friendly, cosmopolitan city with fabulous harbor views.

The Wellington campus - in the center of what's happening!

12 Located in the city's downtown, the Wellington campus offers programs in Communications and Business, Engineering and Technology, Health and Well- being, and Creative Arts. Dear Traveler,

The North Island is warmer than the South Island and more lush. Small tropical islands are to be found in the north and volcanoes in the center of the island. Rugged, sparse, and violent landscapes capture the imagination.

A land of contrasts - New Zealand's North Island.

14 15 Dear Traveler,

Off to the South Island and the city of Dunedin (Gaelic for New Edinburgh) and the home of the University of Otago.

The town celebrates its Scottish ancestry with highland games in March.

Dunedin is a college town with a student-friendly culture.

16 17 The University of Otago is the oldest institution of higher education in New Zealand and attracts students from all over the country and from around the world. It is particularly strong in the humanities, social sciences, and the natural and physical sciences. 19 Dear Traveler,

The Otago Peninsula is just minutes away from Dunedin and an area of outstanding natural beauty. You can literally be in class one minute and surrounded by incredible scenery the next.

You will be amazed by the beauty of the landscape that is home to a unique albatross colony.
