Friends and the Inquisition at Malta
Friends and the Inquisition at Malta GAIN, as a few years ago, I find myself in a position to supply some information about a confrontation of A early Friends and the Inquisition, from the latter side. This is the long and well-known imprisonment in the island of Malta of two West Country British matrons, Katharine Evans and Sarah Cheevers. The preliminary paragraphs of an earlier article will serve as summary.1 In it I referred to the Malta chapter as important, but I had no idea that the records of it would become available. In fact, in 1941, referring to the Friends involved in Rome, in Malta, or Paris, I wrote: "Specially addicted as I am to hunting out the opinions of Friends held by their opponents, I have often coveted a chance to look for these names [of Friends] in the records of the Holy Office, but I am told that the Church still jealously guards the archives of the Inqui sition from inquisitive Protestants."2 In spite of that, when in 1966 I happened to be at Woodbrooke, when a substantial number of men and women from Malta were in residence, I hoped I might form a connection to see if the material there was still so inacessible; and later writing to one of them, I had a reply from a nephew saying that the gentleman I had written to had recently died, but offering to help me in my research. He said that "the archives of the Inquisition are housed in the Museum of the Cathedral of Malta, together with the archives of the Episcopal Curia. -

ABSTRACT The Prevenient Piety of Samuel Wesley, Sr. Arthur Alan Torpy Mentor: William H. Brackney, Ph.D. The life and times of Samuel Wesley, Sr. have been addressed since the time of John and Charles Wesley as an absentee father with little positive influence on the Wesley family. However, the literary contributions of Samuel have been overlooked. Having examined his writings, this dissertation offers a fuller portrait of Samuel Wesley. The thesis of this work is that Samuel Wesley was a complex person whose thoughts, actions, and positions were based on his understanding and practice of his traditions, experience, scripture, and reasoning. A key to understanding Wesley’s life and thought can be found in the Pietist strains evident in his writings, published and unpublished, which formed the basis of his decisions and actions. The chapters explore the dynamics of late seventeenth- century England’s cultural milieu where Wesley was raised and educated within post-Uniformity Dissent and provide his rationale for gradually conforming to the Established Church. The origins of Continental Pietism is summarized and its influence on the Established Church through Anthony Horneck. Also discussed is Samuel’s view of scripture within the context of the nascent critical apparatus introduced by Richard Simon and Baruch Spinoza. Samuel’s rejection of this critical approach is a key to understanding his scriptural hermeneutic which formed the basis of his actions. The overarching characteristic of Samuel Wesley’s life and thought was his understanding of Piety which he passed along to his sons, most notably John and Charles, but also Samuel, Jr. -

Aesthetics in Science, as Practised by Quakers in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries Geoffrey Cantor Universityof Leeds Quaker Studies 4 (1999): 1-20 Abstract: Drawing on examples from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it will be argued that the sciences - but particularly observational sciences such as astronomy, botany and meteorology - were highly acceptable to Quakers. Moreover, the study of nature was vested with an aesthetic that emphasised God as the Creator of nature and of order and beauty in the natural world. While many wealthy Quakers participated in these sciences, botany also provided employment for Quakers from less affiuent backgrounds. Hence a number Quakers made careers as botanical lecturers, writers, publishers and illustrators. The role of the botanical illustrator is explored to show that the aim was to portray nature- God's Creation- with integrity. -

Sallie Anne Acree (1837–1873) kept this scrapbook while living at Forest Home in Bedford County; it contains newspaper clippings on religion, female decorum, poetry, and a few Civil War stories. Adams Family Papers, 1672–1792. 222 items. Mss1Ad198a. Microfilm reel C321. This collection of consists primarily of correspondence, 1762–1788, of Thomas Adams (1730–1788), a merchant in Richmond, Va., and London, Eng., who served in the U.S. Continental Congress during the American Revolution and later settled in Augusta County. Letters chiefly concern politics and mercantile affairs, including one, 1788, from Martha Miller of Rockbridge County discussing horses and the payment Adams's debt to her (section 6). Additional information on the debt appears in a letter, 1787, from Miller to Adams (Mss2M6163a1). There is also an undated letter from the wife of Adams's brother, Elizabeth (Griffin) Adams (1736–1800) of Richmond, regarding Thomas Adams's marriage to the widow Elizabeth (Fauntleroy) Turner Cocke (1736–1792) of Bremo in Henrico County (section 6). Papers of Elizabeth Cocke Adams, include a letter, 1791, to her son, William Cocke (1758–1835), about finances; a personal account, 1789– 1790, with her husband's executor, Thomas Massie; and inventories, 1792, of her estate in Amherst and Cumberland counties (section 11). Other legal and economic papers that feature women appear scattered throughout the collection; they include the wills, 1743 and 1744, of Sarah (Adams) Atkinson of London (section 3) and Ann Adams of Westham, Eng. -

<LA Jitterary Quaker: John Smith of ^Burlington and Philadelphia ISTORIANS of literary culture in pre-Revolutionary America have passed rather lightly over the Middle Colonies, focus- ing their attention for the most part upon the colonies to H 1 the north and south, upon New England and Virginia. The exten- sive intervening region, diversified in racial characteristics and social patterns, highly developed in its intellectual interests, and extremely important for the future of American culture, remains virtually unexplored from this point of view. An important consequence is that we know relatively little about the cultural climate of colonial Philadelphia, the principal urban center in the Middle Colonies, destined presently to become the literary and intellectual as well as the political capital of the United States. "By the close of the colonial age," writes Moses Coit Tyler, "Philadelphia had grown to be the centre of a literary activity more vital and more versatile than was to be seen any where else upon the continent, except at Boston." 2 Such literary activity presupposes a cultivated and receptive reading public as well as a group of practicing authors. The accepted view of Philadelphia's cultural life at this period has distinguished three major groups: (i) a small, fairly sophisticated circle around Provost William Smith of the 1 Thomas G. CHRISTIAN DIALOGUE IN THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY DEAN FREIDAY T THE HARTFORD, CT, meeting of the Ecclesiology Study Group A of the Faith & Order Commission of the National Council of Churches in the United States, in 1995 Brother Jeffrey Gros, F.S.C., convener, asked if the Quakers would prepare a paper on Spiritual Ecumenism and Visible Unity—the latter in the structural sense. After some preliminary pondering, dialogue seemed a more appropriate topic, and one that could be documented from early Quaker experience. Not only does dialogue provide the parameter for all discussions of Christian unity, but a look at the seventeenth- century variety could offer some clues as to why there are differences between current ecumenical approaches to ultimate union. For example, in some talks “altar and pulpit fellowship” is con- sidered the final stage. For others this is only a way station. The World Council of Churches objective, however, has been defined as “eucharistic fellowship.” That phrase appears in both the Constitution of the WCC and the By-Laws of the Faith & Order Commission.1 These are not the only perspectives on ecumenism, however, that are brought to the study of ecclesiology, whether at the national or international level. -

REVIEW OF EARLY QUAKERS AND THEIR THEOLOGICAL THOUGHT LEAH PAYNE irst-generation Quakers were a radical and persecuted sect Fof early modern British Christianity. Early Quakers and Their Theological Thought: 1647-1723 shows why the Quakers have survived when so many other 17th century radicals—including Diggers, Ranters, Levellers or Muggletonians—did not. Along the way readers also discover why the Friends, though initially derided, are so loved in the twenty-first century. Quaker theology, rejected by the powers that be in its own era, resonates with many 21st century readers. Chapters six through nine of Early Quakers include discussions of the theology of Margaret Fell, Edward Burrough, Francis Howgill, Samuel Fisher, and Dorothy White. In “Margaret Fell and the Second Coming of Christ,” Sally Bruyneel demonstrates how Fell interpreted scripture as well as how Fell’s socio-political context informed her eschatology, harmartiology, anthropology, and theology of the Trinity. -
Love and Unity'' in Colonial Pennsylvania Politics
The Quest for Harmony in a Turbulent World: The Principle of "Love and Unity'' in Colonial Pennsylvania Politics ACCORDING TO JAMES LOGAN, mentor of many politicians in ZJk Pennsylvania, "Dissension, Faction, Wars, foreign and intes- JL .m> tine" were created by "Pride, Ambition, and Resentment," qualities antithetical to his—and the Quaker—ideal of "the Beauty of Civil Life."1 For Logan there was an inverse correlation between re- sponsible political behavior and the degree to which human passions controlled politicians. On one level Logan's opinion is perfectly com- patible with that political theory which takes as its starting point the sorry fact that mankind is mostly governed by passions. Since passions are not reliable guides for proper behavior, the responsibility of es- tablishing order falls to the chosen few who manage to keep their passions within proper bounds. Yet, on a different level of argument, it is no coincidence that Logan's causes for "Dissension, Faction, Wars, foreign and intestine" are identical with those other Quakers usually reserved for wars. Moreover, for Quakers these causes were not just deficiencies of mankind but serious deviations from Christian values encompassed in terms like "meekness," "mildness of temper," and "love" as prescribed in the Sermon on the Mountain. Did these terms, however, affect the Quakers' vision of politics and society the same way that the concept of the passions influenced, for example, the political theory of Hobbes and Harrington,2 and if so, in what way did this affect the structure of politics in Pennsylvania? *A shorter version was read to the conference on "The Founding of Pennsylvania, 1682-1800" on October 16, 1982 at Philadelphia. -

SAMUEL FISHER: 17TH-CENTURY QUAKER BIBLICAL SCHOLAR TIMOTHY W. SEID ny inquiry into the early history of the Quaker movement would Acertainly focus on the life and writings of George Fox, and one could not fail also to notice the impact of William Penn on American colonial life. Further study would bring out the place that Margaret Fell had on early Quakerism and might include individuals such as James Nayler and Robert Barclay. Only careful study, however, will bring out of the shadows of history the lesser lights of those who incidentally appear in the more popular writings.1 But are they really “lesser” lights? One of these individuals, whose name is indeed listed along with more notable Quakers by several early writers, is Samuel Fisher.2 Dean Freiday rightly accords him a special place of promi- nence among Bible interpreters in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England,3 and this essay will explore his contribution as a biblical scholar within the Society of Friends, and beyond. -

ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the proposition that the centrally managed work carried out by Britain Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends has suffered from a decline in the income contributed by Members and Attenders. It argues that declining income is strongly linked to dwindling membership. It considers whether the declining levels of income and membership are expressions of secularisation. It researches the historical growth in the Society’s centrally managed work and the development of an organisational structure to support this. It considers recent past experience when the perceived importance of the work led Quakers to lose the balance between caution and ‘living adventurously’. Soaring expenditure, unmatched by similar increase in contribution income, forced a move to budgetary planning, based on a balanced budget and maintenance of a prudent level of reserves. -
