NIEDERREITER CONTINUES TO SCORE IN NEW THREADS Nino Niederreiter (1-0—1) and Justin Faulk (1-1—2) each found the scoresheet as the Hurricanes (25-20-6, 56 points) moved within three points of the idle Blue Jackets (28-19-3, 59 points) for the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. Carolina improved to 9-3-1 (19 points) since Jan. 1, tied with Calgary (9-2-1, 19 points) for the most wins and points since the start of the calendar year. * Niederreiter, who was traded to the Hurricanes on Jan. 17, became the third player in Hurricanes/Whalers franchise history to record at least five goals in his first five games with the club. The others: John Anderson in 1985-86 (6-4—10 in 5 GP) and Radim Vrbata in 2002-03 (5-0—5 in 5 GP). * Faulk recorded his fourth multi-point game of the season to boost his career totals to 78-164— 242 and surpass Dave Babych (44-196—240) for most points by a defenseman in Hurricanes/Whalers franchise history. CROSBY COLLECTS 60TH POINT IN HOME WIN Sidney Crosby (0-2—2) reached the 60-point mark prior his 50th personal game for the seventh time in his career. Only Mario Lemieux (12) and Jaromir Jagr (8) have accomplished the feat on more occasions in Penguins franchise history. * Crosby (22-38—60 in 48 GP) became the 14th player to collect at least 60 points this season. The 2018-19 campaign marks the highest such total through the first 788 games of a season since 1996-97 (21). SEGUIN, ARVIDSSON JOIN 20-GOAL CLUB Dallas’ Tyler Seguin and Nashville’s Viktor Arvidsson each netted two goals Friday to become the 44th and 45th players to reach 20 goals this season. It marks the most 20-goal scorers through 788 games of a campaign since 1996-97 (53). * Seguin recorded his sixth straight season with 20+ goals since joining the Stars in 2013-14. Only Brian Bellows (10x) and Steve Payne (7x) have recorded more such campaigns to begin their stint with the Stars / North Stars franchise. * Arvidsson, who has led the Predators in goals in each of the past two seasons (1st with 29 in 2017-18 and t-1st with 31 in 2016-17), leads all Nashville skaters with 21 goals in 2018-19. AROUND THE RINKS * Evgeny Kuznetsov (1-1—2) scored the NHL's fifth go-ahead goal in the final minute of regulation this season. It marked the first such instance by the Capitals in 2018-19 after scoring a go-ahead goal in the final minute of regulation twice in 2017-18: Jan. 12, 2018 at Carolina (Jay Beagle: 59:58) and Feb. 6, 2018 at Columbus (Nicklas Backstrom: 59:17). * Ken Holland earned his 913th career win as an NHL general manager (all w/ DET) and moved into a tie with Jack Adams for the most in Red Wings franchise history. Only five general managers in NHL history have accumulated more career regular-season wins than Holland and Adams: David Poile (1,364), Glen Sather (1,319), Lou Lamoriello (1,240), Harry Sinden (1,170) and Cliff Fletcher (953) * Andrei Vasilevskiy made 36 saves to earn his 16th career regular-season shutout and move within one of tying Ben Bishop (17) for most in Lightning franchise history. Friday’s outing marked Vasilevskiy’s third-highest save total in a shutout performance, trailing two 40-save feats (43: Oct. 19, 2017 and 40: Jan. 22, 2018). * Elias Lindholm extended his point streak to nine games (2-9—11). Only two Flames players have had a longer point streak in their first season with the franchise: Doug Gilmour (11 GP in 1988-89) and Marc Savard (10 GP in 1999-2000). * Jonathan Huberdeau (13-37—50 in 49 GP) became the fourth player in Panthers franchise history to collect his 50th point prior to his 50th team game, joining Pavel Bure (42 GP in 1999- 00), Scott Mellanby (47 GP in 1995-96) and Olli Jokinen (48 GP in 2006-07). * Prior to their contest with the Maple Leafs, the Red Wings raised Red Kelly’s iconic No. 4 to the rafters. • Injuries Continue to Plague Jets Seven Wounded Players Missed Saturday's Game
Winnipeg Free Press https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/hockey/jets/injuries-continue-to-keep-jets-in-sick- bay-476497963.html?k=QAPMqC Injuries continue to plague Jets Seven wounded players missed Saturday's game By: Mike McIntyre WASHINGTON — Is there a doctor in the house? It’s been a common refrain for the Winnipeg Jets lately, as they just can’t seem to get close to a full, healthy lineup. Seven players were out due to injury in Saturday’s 2-1 loss in Philadelphia. Here’s what we know about all of them, with further updates expected today as the Jets return to action with a morning skate and then their game in Washington against the Capitals. Mark Scheifele has missed two games with a suspected shoulder injury, and there will be no rushing him back into action. He’s considered day-to-day at this point, and coach Paul Maurice had said last week he was a possibility to play either tonight, or tomorrow in Nashville. But don’t bet on it. Defenceman Toby Enstrom is battling a lower-body issue which kept him out for four games, saw him return in New Jersey last Thursday and then be back out on Saturday. Maurice said it’s a nagging thing that can change day-to-day, so his status is very much a question mark. Defenceman Dmitry Kulikov missed Saturday’s game after getting hurt Thursday in New Jersey. Maurice hasn’t said how long he could be out, only that it’s upper-body. Goalie Steve Mason has been sent back to Winnipeg for further testing on a lower-body injury he suffered late in the game against the New York Rangers last Tuesday, which was his first game back from his second concussion of the season.

  • Hockey Great Kevin Lowe on 40 Years with the NHL and Why He
Darren Paltrowitz June 25 2018 Hockey Great Kevin Lowe on 40 Years With the NHL And Why He Calls Mexico Home Part-Time Drafted to the NHL's Edmonton Oilers as part of the team's 1979 NHL Entry Draft, Kevin Lowe played 13 full seasons with the Oilers before moving on to the New YorK Rangers. Regarded as one of the three kings of the Oilers 1980s dynasty, alongside Wayne GretzKy and MarK Messier, Lowe won 6 Stanley Cups within his playing career. He also managed to be a seven-time NHL All-Star beyond being the recipient of 1990's King Clancy Memorial Trophy. While a 19-year playing career in the NHL would be enough for most players, Kevin Lowe went on to join the Oilers staff as an assistant coach in 1998. He transitioned into a head coach the following year, and then became the team's general manager in 2000. Still employed by the Oilers, Lowe is currently the Vice Kevin Lowe - NHL All Star, Stanley Cup Winner & Executive Chairman of the Oilers Entertainment Group. Lowe has also been involved with interesting projects over the years outside of hockey. One such project is consulting for Vivo Resorts, an all-suite beachfront resort in Puerto Escondido, Mexico. Vivo is the brainchild of another notable pro athlete, former World Cup downhill sKi champion and Olympian Cary Mullen of Canada. When speaKing with Lowe by phone, I asKed him about his careers both on and off the ice, in addition to how Mexico first became part of his life.
