Oxford May 2015 Approved by _________________________________ Adviser: Professor Jeffrey Watt _________________________________ Reader: Professor Marc Lerner _________________________________ Reader: Professor Molly Pasco-Pranger ©2015 Alison Guider ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT ALISON GUIDER: Freedom of Expression and the Enlightenment (Under the direction of Jeffrey Watt) This thesis concerns Enlightenment and pre-Enlightenment views of freedom of expression, including topics such as toleration, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and freedom of the press. It then looks at how these views shaped some of the ideas that emerged from the American and French Revolution. The conclusions drawn here are drawn from document-based research, both primary and secondary sources. The Enlightenment, although primarily concentrated in the eighteenth century, actually had what one might call precursors in the seventeenth century, including John Locke, Benedict de Spinoza, and Pierre Bayle. These thinkers helped set the stage for Enlightenment thinkers such as Voltaire, Charles de Secondat, Baron de Montesquieu, and Karl Friedrich Bahrdt. All of these thinkers wrote on freedom of expression, but they did not always agree on how far this freedom should be extended, which represented a division between moderate and Radical Enlightenment. Both strains of the Enlightenment, however, were read by both the American and French Revolutionaries and shaped the ideas of freedom of expression that came out of these two revolutions, including protections of free press. Although the Enlightenment does have a bit of a complicated legacy, modern day protections of freedom of expression would not exist without it; therefore, an in-depth study of the origins of these protections is worthwhile. -

After joining the staff of La Revue des deux mondes shortly after the beginning of this regime, he campaigned against the superficiality in the art of his time. The vehemence of his attacks earned him the nickname of La Revue des deux mondes ' executeur des hautes oeuvres, that is, its public executioner. He has generally been judged a highly conservative critic or even, by his biographer Maurice Regard, an adversary of Romanticism.£1] The focus of this article will be the development of Planche's ideas during the first and most fruitful phase of his writing, 1830 to 1840. During these years, the political stance of La Revue des deux mondes was decidedly antigovernment. -

WWW. gr EE ns B orodaY. org Inside: Our Annual Report HEad’S CornER My Greensboro Day School Difference Our new admission catalog touts “The Greensboro Day School Difference.” Here are some thoughts I have had on what makes us different: The GDS Difference is an opening of school ceremony where students applaud a parade of seniors and kindergartners, and welcome a diverse group of 144 new students and ten new employees, while the Upper School student council president, Patrick Robinson, rings in our 39th year. The GDS Difference means never resting on past successes, and always looking for new and innovative ways to develop our curriculum. As you will read in this issue, we have introduced tablet computers to our Upper School (page 18), and our Lower School continues to strengthen its program of differentiated instruction (page 6). The GDS Difference means that our faculty look outside the classroom to improve their subject knowledge and teaching styles in order to provide a richer and more diverse classroom experience for our students. Ruthie Tutterow just returned from her Brooks Sabbatical (page 12), Tim Martin is heading to Siberia (page 5), and Clarissa Marshall’s global initiatives made national headlines (page 6). The GDS Difference means our students are recognized as international leaders of diversity and global change. Their selection to attend a world-wide summit in India is only the beginning of what will sure to be a program of ideas and change (page 6). The GDS Difference extends beyond our current student body to the achievement of our alumni. -
