A few times a week Joe broadcast the show live online, the shows are then made available to download from iTunes (via Podcast). Each week Joe features a marathoner, and often does shout outs to marathoners from all over. Another great part of this show is the “runners chat”, in these shows Joe gets three marathoners together and does a round table discussion about many great topics. Matt Manning (#585) – New Las Vegas Marathon (La Vegas, NV) – December 10, 2006 – Age 40 I trained for my first marathon, Chicago '04, with little expectation. As a 38 year old 20+ year smoker who was unable to run a mile non-stop in 2000 (the year I quit), I knew that just finishing 26 miles would be an amazing accomplishment. I trained using a very basic Hal Higdon structured program and finished my first marathon in 4:23:44. Man, oh man, was that hard. I thought 'never again'. However, by the time I got home from Chicago I was thinking about it... maybe just one more... I started looking for my next marathon. I chose the old Las Vegas International Marathon in January '05. I recovered from Chicago, built a new 3 month training schedule, and decided to try and BQ in my 2nd race! I met up with 2 online running buddies who were also going for <3:16 and we took off together at the start. The winds were blowing hard that day out of the north, and the course was point to point... heading north. Buddy one dropped off pace before mile 8. I fell off pace at mile 14. Buddy two nailed it. I finished in 3:49:48... no BQ, but a massive PR! I felt great afterward with very little soreness, so I thought I could shave off another 30 minutes if I ran another marathon soon... so I ran Austin 2 weeks later... starting at BQ pace, and ending at mile 20 with cramps in places I didn't even know I had muscles! DNF. Over the next year I ran 3 more marathons, but all were slower than my 3:49. It seemed I would never get close to a BQ time! Then, in May '06, I ran the Flying Pig in 3:32 (unexpectedly). This renewed my interest in a BQ. I had just turned 40 and now only needed a <3:21. I trained HARD that summer for Chicago '06. I ran a mile time trial in 5:18. I ran a 5K time trial in 18:34. I got my weight down to 165 and was READY! The weather on race day was cold and windy, but great for marathon running.

  • Updated 2019 Completemedia
April 15, 2019 Dear Members of the Media, On behalf of the Boston Athletic Association, principal sponsor John Hancock, and all of our sponsors and supporters, we welcome you to the City of Boston and the 123rd running of the Boston Marathon. As the oldest annually contested marathon in the world, the Boston Marathon represents more than a 26.2-mile footrace. The roads from Hopkinton to Boston have served as a beacon for well over a century, bringing those from all backgrounds together to celebrate the pursuit of athletic excellence. From our early beginnings in 1897 through this year’s 123rd running, the Boston Marathon has been an annual tradition that is on full display every April near and far. We hope that all will be able to savor the spirit of the Boston Marathon, regardless whether you are an athlete or volunteer, spectator or member of the media. Race week will surely not disappoint. The race towards Boylston Street will continue to showcase some of the world’s best athletes. Fronting the charge on Marathon Monday will be a quartet of defending champions who persevered through some of the harshest weather conditions in race history twelve months ago. Desiree Linden, the determined and resilient American who snapped a 33-year USA winless streak in the women’s open division, returns with hopes of keeping her crown. Linden has said that last year’s race was the culmination of more than a decade of trying to tame the beast of Boston – a race course that rewards those who are both patient and daring.

The question, however, remains as to what extent this report- ed scepticism truly reflects people’s opinions and feelings about Europe. We all consider it normal to cross borders within Europe, often while using the same money, as well as to take part in exchange programmes, invest in enterprises across Europe and appeal to European institutions if national regulations, for example, do not meet our expectations.
