It can tell us the chemical composition and relative motion of distant stars and galaxies. Spectroscopy is the study of electromagnetic (EM) waves. These waves are caused by oscillating electric fields and magnetic fields. As a matter of fact, visible light, Infra-red, radio waves, gamma ray and ultra-violet are all EM waves. From the spectrum, we see that white light is made up of different colours. іϗΈᗅj Absorption Spectrum:

Through the experiment, we know that sunlight is made of light of different colours. When sunlight passes through clouds of gases, gas molecules are excited by photons of specific frequencies. These photons are then absorbed by the molecules in the process. Lightwaves that are not absorbed will pass straight through the gas. When we view it through our spectroscope, we can see a spectrum of rainbow colours but with a few dark bands on it. The distibution of these bands vary with different gases. They are just like fingerprints. Each distinct element will absorb different light, resulting in different patterns of dark bands. Through identification of band patterns, we can identify the components of the gas. The dark bands in a stellar spectrum can actually reveal the elements that make up the atmosphere of the star.
