When you see someone in military uniform or just wearing an old service reminder, please stop and take the time to thank them. Now let’s look ahead to June. One of my favorite days is June 20th this year, Father’s Day of course. Is there a Grandfather’s Day? Consider extending your time and appreciation to those men not fortunate enough to have family with them. Gratefully, we are expanding our June issue, adding more pages to accommodate announcements for the return of Space Coast activities. This also provides us the opportunity to add more educational and entertaining articles and puzzles. We love providing all of this that you have grown to enjoy over the 15 years we have been here on the Space Coast. Thank you and enjoy. See you next month.

he United States owned the world’s supply of wood in greatest demand for shipbuilding. These Southern TLive Oak trees (Quercus Virginiana), were seen as an asset when Florida was accepted into Statehood in 1841. Live Oak pirates and poachers from England, France and Spain regularly and illegally cut and carried off trees to supply vital parts for foreign naval vessels. For centuries the English timbered from Virginia through Georgia. Throughout Florida to Louisiana the live oak pirates decimated the public lands. Spain maintained its naval and commercial vessels but did little to prevent pillage of its vast coastal forests. Then it all changed with the American Revolution. In 1794, President Washington established the US Navy, and ordered six American built frigates to protect American commercial shipping in the Mediterranean threatened by pirates from the African Barbary Coast. During the War of 1812, one of the new frigates, the Constitution, successfully repelled cannon bombardment as the cannonballs bounced off the sides of the ship. It was there after known as Old Ironsides, even though it had no iron, just live oak sheathing and live oak internal braces. The race was then on for the remaining Live Oak trees in Florida. Some loyalist in Georgia even shipped trees to the West Indies for English ships. Unprotected rivers were open to illicit forestry by nations worldwide. Florida, first a territory in 1821 and a state in 1841, held the last virgin stands of the coveted Southern Live Oak. Congress passed legislation making live oak lands federal property to assure a continued supply of “ship construction timber” for our Navy. American shipbuilding expertise found that coastal grown live oaks produced a stronger and denser wood with less sap and finer grain than those found farther inland. Whaling ship builders having depleted the near shore whale population were forced father worldwide and for longer voyages. An 1826 survey along the Atlantic Coast in Florida, reported more than half of all live oaks were gone as far as 15 miles inland. The take of Live Oak trees had expanded due to the demand from whaling, the US Navy, commercial shipbuilders and trade. Florida statehood did not come without trauma. Chased south from Georgia and Alabama by advancing Americans, the Seminole Indians fought back in a series of wars. To form a buffer between the Seminoles and Florida coastal development, settlers were given free live oak rich land along the Indian River. An assigned US Revenue Agent was posted to collect a tax for each of the nation’s oaks felled. With the

A more efficient way to find victims is through the use of websites that are rigged with malware agents. This reduces what the potential victim has to do to become compromised. Malware agents hiding within the site immediately go to work searching your computer for known vulnerabilities that haven’t been patched. If they find any holes, they can leverage the vulnerability to silently sneak malicious code onto your computer as the page is loading. In many cases, the goal is to find vulnerabilities that will allow the hacker to remotely access the computer, providing them with endless opportunities to exploit the victim. The only action the victim needs to take in the ‘drive-by download’ scenario is to simply visit one of these booby- trapped websites. Malicious links leading to these sites can be sent via email, text messages, in social media posts, in forums, in the comments section of a website or anywhere an active web link can be used. Hacking Legitimate Websites Another tactic for getting malicious links in front of victims is by compromising legitimate websites and embedding the links within the site. This is why it’s so important for anyone with a website to keep up with security updates or risk becoming an unwitting accomplice to this malicious activity. Hackers have also been known to sneak malicious ads onto websites - also known as ‘malvertising’ – aware that most users don’t suspect that an ad can lead to malware. Preventative Measures The initial item exposed to these malicious websites is your browser, so keeping it updated is your first line of defense. If you aren’t sure how to check for updates for your browser, do a Google search for “updating XXXX browser” where XXXX is the name of your browser.

The idea for the program comes think so. Are people Hfrom work we did at the Alzheimer's Foundation in the more tuned in to late 1990's. Each day, two volunteers from AARP called 20 text messaging, people who lived alone to see if they needed help. Most often social media, it just was a friendly chat, keeping the person connected to and apps such as a name they recognized. I would sometimes sit and join the FaceTime? These conversation. It was easy to hear the joy felt by the person on are all great ways the other end of the line. to communicate, Now we are some 25 years down the pike. Has the need but I think the need for a program like Staying Connected has actually increased. We have more elderly, more people living alone, and more need for interpersonal relationships, based on my own experience living in a rehabilitation center with people who did not have family or friends. We need people in our lives. That phrase is the basis for the entire Staying Connected program. Isolation is not conducive for healthy living, a fact made all too clear by the recent nationwide bout with coronavirus. Consider the times when a call from you might have made a huge difference to an elderly person on their own and unable to drive. Just hearing a friendly voice for a quick chat means a lot to those who live alone. Think about it – do you get frustrated when you get an automatic response to a call? Do you miss asking questions and getting replies from a live person? Progress is great, but we need to reestablish the person in the calling equation. So Staying Connected is now an official program of Helping Seniors. All you need do is call 321-473-7770 and Kim will get you enrolled on our call list. We also need volunteers to make the calls. It would be especially helpful to have retired nurses, social workers, or people of a similar background who can dedicate a few hours a week to the program. The calling can be done from your home or an office setting, whatever is easiest for you. The number of seniors in Brevard continues to increase, so the need for this program will keep growing. Call Kim at 321-473-7770 or email us at info@ helpingseniorsofbrevard.org. We do need your help. Contact Helping Seniors at 321-473-7770, at www.HelpingSeniorsofBrevard.org, or at P.O. 26 | www.seniorscenemag.com | June 2021 Greetings, My short message can not begin to tell you of the many things Helping Seniors resolves on a daily basis. One of the most frequent and difficult problems is placement of an elderly relative in an assisted living or nursing home. It is hard for a senior to leave their comfortable and familiar home, which they have lived in for many years. Sadly, circumstances often dictate change regardless of whether or not either party wants this to occur. The situation is further compounded when the parties live far apart. One of the most difficult obstacles to overcome is the failure of both parties to communicate their desires to each other. What should be an easy decision to make becomes quite complicated, and the specter of a guardianship rears its ugly head. This is a no-win situation, because one party will likely bear permanent scars of the conflict resolution. Early communication of wishes can often facilitate an understanding amicable to either party, avoiding the placement of a guardianship on the party needing advanced care. Something not often discussed or understood is the licensing of the assisted living facility, a matter of great importance. Some facilities are licensed to provide more advanced care then others, enabling the senior to stay where they are happy and want to remain, rather than make another stressful move to a different facility. My advice is to ask questions and avail yourself of a placement service. This is a new experience for you, but not for them, and they can help you ask the right questions. I would be remiss if I did not ask for your help with the car raffle. We need a constant flow of ticket donations so that our cash flow remains steady. It would also be a great help if you would tell your friends about the raffle. We do need your support.

June 2021 | Senior Scene® Magazine | 39 SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Lessons Learned From Buying Online

o many things have changed in how we live our lives in the time of COVID. It's been a year since it all began in Searnest and, despite the vaccines, nothing has really gone back to normal. Even small tasks have a layer of "more difficult" on them ... such as buying a new handheld vacuum cleaner. My little handheld vac began dying after just a short time. I tried to baby it along, but now even with a full overnight charge, it only runs for 42 seconds before it quits again and wants another long charge. Used to be I'd go off to a local store, examine several possibilities and buy one. This time I went online, where thousands of selections awaited me, as well as hundreds of reviews for each item. I changed the list to lowest price first. I changed the list to most popular. I searched for only the manufacturer of my current handheld vac. It didn't help. Here are some things I learned along the way. If you're faced with making a purchase online and are hit with too many choices, call your local stores and ask what they recommend. Then look up the item online. If an item description (such as for a big fry pan) says it weighs 5.2 pounds, take your current fry pan into the bathroom and weigh it on your scale for comparison. If you want new shirts and the sizing chart online is iffy, order more of what you already have, but in different colors. The end result of this saga is that I purchased the same brand and model as my current vacuum. If nothing else, I know it will last approximately 2.5 years, which is right after the warranty expires. But at least I'll know what to expect while it works. (C) 2021 KING FEATURES SYNDICATE, INC.

A smaller number of people will have symptoms that involve eating and chewing -- this sounds like your friend's primary problem -- and a few will have weakness in the limbs, neck or face, or of the breathing muscles. The diagnosis is usually confirmed by blood testing, but a few people will need more sophisticated testing, such as an electrical muscle stimulation test. MG commonly affects women under 40 and men over 60, but it can occur in any age group. The thymus, an immune organ that is located in the upper chest behind the sternum (breastbone), is an important origination point for MG, and 10% to 15% of people with MG have tumors of the thymus. Surgical removal of the thymus is often performed to improve symptoms. In addition to removal of the thymus, there are three other types of treatment for MG. The first is medicines that help the nerve-muscle receptor work better, such as pyridostigmine. This starts working within minutes. The second is treatments to get rid of the antibodies attacking the receptor. Plasmapheresis, the physical removal of antibodies, takes a few days to start working; intravenous immune globulin takes a week or two to work. It's not clear exactly how these work in MG. The third type, anti-immune system drugs, take much longer: a few weeks for prednisone but several months at least for others, such as cyclosporine and mycophenolate. Your friend is in a period where many of the treatments have not had time to work yet, and I expect that she will get better as the treatments take hold. Her doctors may be talking to her about removing the thymus, but she needs to be well controlled before surgery. Some experts use plasmapheresis or immune globulin to get good control quickly before surgery, especially in people whose symptoms involve eating and facial functions.
