Troxell The relationship between religion and politics has been a tenuous one in Western culture. Related to this tension is the growing interest in what we might call the “postsecular.” Postsecularity describes the sense in which what we think of as the secular is not something left over when religion is abolished but rather a way of thinking that was constructed in response to and on the heels of developments in Christian theology. This dissertation examines the work of John Howard Yoder, Stanley Hauerwas, and John Milbank, three theologians whose work is not only postsecular in the way just described, but also politically radical. In particular, it explores the extent to which these theologians might contribute to conversations surrounding emerging forms of anarchism – sometimes called “postanarchism” – in response to neoliberalism. The theological means by which the three thinkers arrive at a radical politics are relevant to anarchist theory and conversations about radical resistance, but it is Yoder’s comprehensively nonviolent politics that has the most to offer postanarchist theory. You find these radical disciples everywhere – in African shanty towns and South American barrios, American ghettoes and British sump housing estates – identifying themselves cheerfully with the dispossessed, and courageously challenging the systems that oppress them. Poor in spirit and heart, they keep alive the challenge of Jesus to the thoughtless excesses of the powers that rule the world, proving that the Sermon on the Mount is still one of the most subversive utterances in history. -Richard Holloway, How to Read the Bible, pp. 88-89. The relationship between religion and politics – particularly with regard to Christianity, but more generally as well – has been a tenuous one in Western culture. If not exactly an arena of endless struggle, it is certainly a site of constant negotiation. Mark Lilla, in The Stillborn God, traces this negotiation in the West, beginning with what he calls “political theology…a primordial form of human thought [that] for millennia has provided a deep well of ideas and symbols for organizing society and inspiring action for good or ill” (4) and continuing through Augustine’s “two cities,” Boniface’s “two swords,” and Luther’s

Reed Appalachian State University, Boone, USA Abstract The Emerging Church is one of the more interesting new movements in the religious landscape of the United States today. The Emerging Church has come out of US Evangelicalism, which has found itself in crisis, with a diminishing number of young people remaining in the church and a general popular impression of being intolerant, judgmental, and right-wing. Many in the Emerging Church are attempting to construct a vision of Christianity that addresses these problems. However, the Emerging Church is not a monolith; it includes a variety of perspectives and positions. What I will argue in this article is that there is, among several different perspectives within the movement, a critique of the US political and economic system that provides an interesting and new way of thinking about the relationship between Christianity, politics, economics, and identity that may serve to create a challenge to the hegemonic system of the United States. For the purposes of this article I use three examples to illustrate my point: Shane Claibourne’s ‘‘New Monasticism’’/’’Red Letter Christians’’ movement; Brian McLaren’s recent work, Why did Jesus, Moses, the Buddha and Mohammed Cross The Road; and Peter Rollins as a self-proclaimed inheritor of the radical tradition.

Gandhi is a bridge figure across cultures in that his thought and action were inspired by both Indian and Western traditions. And, of course, in that his influence has spread across the globe. He was shaped by his upbringing in Gujarat India and the influences of Hindu and Jain piety. He identified as a Sanatani Hindu. Yet he was also influenced by Western thought: the New Testament, Henry David Thoreau, John Ruskin, Count Leo Tolstoy. We will read these authors: Thoreau, On Civil Disobedience; Ruskin, Unto This Last; Tolstoy, A Letter to a Hindu and The Kingdom of God is Within You. We will read Gandhi’s autobiography, My Experiments with Truth, and a variety of texts from his Collected Works covering the social, political, and religious dimensions of his struggle for a free India and an India of social justice. We will read selections from his commentary on the Bhagavad Gita, the book that was his daily inspiration and that also, ironically, was the inspiration of his assassin. We will encounter Gandhi’s clash over communal politics and caste with another architect of modern India – Bimrao Ambedkar, author of the constitution, Buddhist convert, and leader of the “untouchable” community.

    RENDER UNTO RAWLS: LAW, GOSPEL, AND THE EVANGELICAL FALLACY Wayne R. Barnes∗ I. INTRODUCTION Many explicitly Christian voices inject themselves frequently and regularly into the current public policy and political discourse. Though not all, many of these Christian arguments proceed in something like the following manner. X is condemned (or required) by God, as revealed in the Bible. Therefore, the explicitly-required “Christian position” on X is for the law to prohibit or limit the activity (or require it), in accordance with the advocate’s interpretation of biblical ethical standards. To be clear, I mean to discuss only those scenarios where a Christian publicly identifies a position as being mandated by Christian morality or values --- i.e., where the public is given a message that some law or public policy is needed in order to comply with the Christian scriptures or God’s will. That is, in short, this article is about explicit political communications to the public in overt religious language of what Christianity supposedly requires for law and policy. As will be seen, these voices come quite famously from the Christian Religious Right, but they come from the Religious Left as well. Political philosophers (most famously John Rawls) have posited that pluralism and principles of liberal democracy strongly counsel against resort to such religious views in support of or against any law or public policy.1 That is, in opposition to this overt religious advocacy in the political realm (though, it should be noted, not necessarily taking a substantive position on the issues, per se) is the position of Rawlsian political liberalism, which states generally that, all things being equal, such inaccessible religious arguments should not be made, but rather arguments should only be made by resort to “public reason” which all find to be accessible.2 Christian political voices counter that this results in an intolerable stifling of their voice, of requiring that they “bracket” ∗ Professor, Texas Wesleyan University School of Law.

Jacobsen, ed., Climate Justice and the Economy: Social mobilization, knowledge and the political (Routledge 2018) On Social Ecology and the Movement for Climate Justice – Brian Tokar, Institute for Social Ecology and University of Vermont Environmental Program Abstract: The theory and praxis of social ecology have guided social movements seeking a radical, counter- systemic ecological outlook since the 1960s, advancing goals of transforming society’s relationship to non-human nature and reharmonizing human communities’ ties to the natural world. This chapter reviews the philosophy and political outlook of social ecology, its multifaceted contributions to social movements past and present, and its emerging contributions to addressing current climate policy challenges. These include the viability of proposed transition strategies toward a fossil-free future, the potentialities and limitations of localist, community-centered responses to climate change, the problems inherent in current market-driven models of renewable energy development, and the potential contributions of reconstructive, neo-utopian outlooks to contemporary climate politics. We conclude that, despite the ever-present threat of climate catastrophe, a genuinely transformative climate justice movement needs to advance a forward-looking view of an improved quality of life for most people in a future freed from fossil fuel dependence.     BOOK REVIEWS Theology of Mission: A Believers Church Perspective. By John Howard Yoder. Gayle Gerber Koontz and Andy Alexis-Baker, eds. Downers Grove, Ill.: IVP Academic. 2014. Pp. 432. $45. In his writings on the Psalms, Walter Brueggemann suggests that the psalmists lead us through a process of ‚orientation, disorientation and new orientation.‛1 I have found Brueggemann’s comments helpful in guiding me through the recent discussions surrounding John Howard Yoder’s sexual misconduct. Yoder has provided me—as he has with so many others—my plumb line ‚orientation‛ to the world. As Wilbert R. Shenk’s introduction point outs, Yoder’s vision and theological commitments were instrumental in shaping the work of Mennonite Board of Missions among African Independent Churches in Cote d’Ivoire, West Africa, where my parents served as missionaries and where I grew up. As a young adult, I attended and was baptized at Prairie St. Mennonite Church—the congregation Yoder called home for many years. And as a student at Fuller Seminary, Yoder’s writings have been, and continue to be, some of the most powerful and formative in shaping my missiological grid. Given Yoder’s influence in my own life, I now find myself experiencing a period of ‚disorientation.‛ I am baffled by Yoder’s destructive tendencies and wonder what should have been done in terms of accountability. Like the psalmists, I am trying to get to a place of ‚reorientation,‛ one that narrates how God rescues us from sin in a decisive way and that includes experiencing God’s grace, peace, and love, trusting that it will lead to reconciliation with Yoder’s legacy.2 While John Howard Yoder is best known for his work on issues of war and peace, the editors of this volume note that the theology of mission preoccupied him as a scholar, teacher, missionary, and ecumenical dialogue partner for most of his life.

    Forum on Public Policy Sociomaterial Movement Learning in Evangelical Student Activism: A Case Study in Environmental Education Sherrie Steiner, Assistant Professor, Sociology Department, Indiana University – Purdue University, Fort Wayne Abstract What began as a professor’s classroom illustration to encourage students to take climate change seriously sparked a student movement that transformed Eastern University into a leader in environmental stewardship and social responsibility. How did this happen at an evangelical university in a conservative coal state that, at the time, was producing 1% of the world’s climate change gases? Using the method of autoethnography, the author provides an explanation that involves political opportunity structures (recent legal changes now allowed consumers to purchase clean energy from the electrical grid), the influence of ideas (the professor had published a theory about the transformative influence of environmental education—students challenged her to operationalize the theories), intentional strategizing (by students who implemented best practices from other universities), student government (who conducted meetings across campus before holding a senate vote) and political struggle between university administrators and students that was only resolved after the student body president obtained media coverage by The Philadelphia Inquirer. What really lit a fire under the student body, however, went beyond theory frames, politics, legal changes, social movement strategies, student government or individual charisma. Some might call it serendipity. By 2003, 37% of Eastern University’s electricity came from wind energy. Within two years, Eastern University had 100% of the electricity for the main campus generated by wind energy. In 2004, they added a 56 kilowatt solar system to the roof of the Eagle Learning Center.
