  • Iniezioneiniezione the Newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club
IniezioneIniezione The newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club Summer in the NW Words by Fred Russell It’s hard to imagine how an act of animal cruelty can lead to a number of wonderful things, but that is exactly what we discovered on our 2014 NWARC Annual Summer Drive. After our driver / navigator talk in a large sunny parking lot in Woodin- ville, our leaders, Ken & Louisa Case, handed out the route guides and gimmick questions, and we headed out. Just under 20 cars joined in for the run as we wandered east toward Duvall long wooded roads with a little construction going on. We then turned north along the scenic West Snoqualmie Valley Road with the valley floor, farms, and the placid river on our right side. Eventually, we turned right over the river to follow Tualco Road past flower farms, the former Wash State Penitentiary Photos by Gordy Hyde Honor farm, and a rural tractor show. Another couple turns and we were on Ben Howard Road as it twists its way along the south side of the Skykomish River to the town of Sultan. As we left Sultan, we again found back roads but this time we wound our way to a gate at Pasado’s Safe Haven. Our guide met us at the gate as we entered. Our walking tour commenced and we stopped at the first enclosure. Two huge pigs greeted us as our host petted them and told of their story. Across from the pigs, a couple donkeys enjoyed a field with shade, sun, water, and a nice shed.

  • Dave Philpot's Fiat Report
THE MORGAN WITH THE THOROUGHBRED ENGINE? Between 1981 and ’87 Morgan produced a little over two hundred cars fitted with the FIAT twin cam engine. This engine is also known as the Lampredi twin cam after the man responsible for its design and engineering, Aurelio Lampredi [1917-89]. The form in which it was specified by Morgan and how it came to be used will be explained later, but first a look at its background. Conception. To start we go back to what we now know as Formula 1, post World War II. The Formula was for 1,5 litre supercharged or 4,5 litre naturally aspirated cars and the cars used were essentially of pre-war design, as was the formula they raced under from 1946. The dominant car was the Alfa Romeo 158/159 Alfetta, winning 37 out of 41 starts in Grand Prix races and 10 out of 13 starts in Formula 1 races. The Alfa was powered by a supercharged straight eight of 1500cc, which in its final form, unbelievably developed well over 400 bhp at 9300 rpm. This came at a price in terms of fuel consumption, the car barely covering half a kilometre on a litre of fuel. Its success was also due in some part to having Giuseppe Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio on the team. Alfa withdrew from racing at the end of the 1951 season. The second piece of this jigsaw concerns signor Enzo Anseimo Ferrari who drove for Alfa and for a while managed their racing division. He left Alfa in 1937 and started his own company making mainly racing components for other manufacturers, being prevented under a contract with Alfa to build complete cars.

FIAT The 1999 marks a significant anniversary: Fiat's Centenary. To celebrate the anniversary Pininfarina played an active part in the project organized by Italian Coachbuilders, displaying 70 of the cars that best represent the historic relationship with the Fiat Company on two of Turin's most beautiful squares, in July 1999. Pininfarina also intended to pay homage to Fiat realizing Wish a research prototype built on the mechanical of the new Fiat Punto. In the life of people and companies stories often intertwine to form a tightly woven fabric that is only strengthened by the passage of time and that shared work and mutual respect help to keep unaltered from generation to generation. That is the case of Fiat and Pininfarina, that have been travelling companions in realizing cars thought as aesthetic and industrial objects result of creativity and technology. The little company FIAT, set up in 1899 thanks to an act of faith towards the future by Giovanni Agnelli and a small group of pioneers, has developed into a significant international presence. For its part Pininfarina, which was established by Battista Farina, known as Pinin, in 1930 as a craftsman coachbuilder, has been transformed over the years into a diversified complex which stands at the cutting edge of design, technology, and engineering. The relationship between Pininfarina and Fiat actually started long before the foundation in 1930 of Carrozzeria Anonima Pinin Farina. Born in 1893, Pinin started working as a boy in the Stabilimenti Farina owned by his brother Giovanni, who was called in to co-operate with the Fiat, managed by Senator Giovanni Agnelli, when the was working on a new car, the Zero, the progenitor of all the utility cars.
