Currentlv there are over 100 warehousing, distribution, and trucking related facilities along this 75 mile stretch of interstate freeway with ill the Cumberland Valley, with more under construction or in the planning stage. Several factors are responsible [or the growth of the trucking industry in this reg ion. Interstate 81 passes through few large cities, unlike 1-c)5 to the east, so urban truffic is III illill/a I. Interstates 70, 76, and 78, which intersect 1-81 within the region, provide easy access to both the eastern seaboard and the interior. Municipalities I·iew warehousing as a benign form of economic development, and local land owners are eager to sell to development compunies as prices increase. Initiall» facilities were limited to the freeway intercltanges at l lugcrstown, Harrisburg, and Carlisle. However, warehousing and distribution lias begun to spread tlnougliout the valley, particularly in Chambersburg, which has recently seen a significant increase warehouse construction. This paper describes the geography of warehousing and distribution related [acilities within tlte Cumberland Valley and identifies sonic of tlie issues facing the region in light of the continuing growth ofthis industry. One such trend has been the resurgence in the integration of Natural Stone Elements alongside the manufactured products that we have seen in the past. (See our example at the top left corner of this page.) Folks are excited about incorporating massive cut boulders and large stone treads into their man-made paver walkways. Flagstone walkways are becoming popular again. Another trend includes incorporating Stone Veneer into the landscape palette (see our photo on the top right of this page). Stone veneer has become popular for vertical finishes such as fireplaces, columns, or risers in stairs. The final trend has developed due to increased regulatory controls regarding the management of storm water runoff. Don’t worry; we’ve got a solution- Permeable Pavers! As townships and municipalities become more and more stringent on how storm water run-off is handled,, the demand for permeable pavers increases. Our example to the left is a great display of how solving water run-off problems can lead to a beautiful end result!     Corridor Achievements TRANSPORTATION CORRIDORS OF STATEWIDE SIGNIFICANCE While the previous section of Report of Achievements 2001 presents progress toward PennPlan’s 30 objectives for develop- ment of the transportation system across the Commonwealth, this section presents progress toward objectives established in each of 28 corridors of statewide significance. We defined such corridors as collections of interconnected and interacting transportation facilities that move people and goods between regions of the Commonwealth and between the Commonwealth and other states. For example, the corri- dors that connect Pittsburgh and Philadelphia consist of not just the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Rather, they include US 30, US 22/ 322, Amtrak services, freight rail lines, international airports, water ports, transit systems, and other facilities, all moving people and goods east and west. The objectives for each corridor of statewide significance were based in the long range planning carried out by metropolitan plan- ning organizations, local development districts, county planning commissions, and other agencies that develop regional and local transportation plans. The corridor objectives were developed with our partners in a way that provides for continuity among their plans, offers solutions in cases where regional or interstate plans conflict, and is consistent with statewide objectives. In 1995-1996, the Cumberland Valley School District received funds to recruit three educational agencies/school districts willing to replicate its high school diploma program for adults. A booklet explaining how to replicate the program was developed, and the life skills used in the diploma program were updated. After presentations describing the High School Diploma Program for Adults had been made at regional staff development workshops across Pennsylvania, three local school districts agreed to initiate high school diploma programs modeled after the Cumberland Valley School District's program (Northwest Intermediate Unit #5, Schuylkill Intermediate Unit #29, and Metropolitan Career Center and the Philadelphia School District). The workshop presentations of the program were extremely well received. The biggest barrier to acceptance of the model program was General Educational Development (GED) providers' fear of losing their programs.

    Chapter 7 Parks, Greenways, and Trails Chapter 7 Introduction Some of the most beautiful and important lands and water areas in Cumberland County are the parks, trails, forests, streams, and game lands used for outdoor recreation. This section of Land Partnerships assesses park resources in Cumberland County by type and size for present and projected future needs. The purpose is to ensure that Cumberland County, its municipalities and other organizations secure enough of the right kind of land to provide the scale and nature of parks countywide for present and future generations. Parks & Natural Areas of Cumberland County Cumberland County has a variety of parks and natural areas managed at the federal, state, county and local levels of government. Combined, they offer the people who live and visit Cumberland County a variety of year-round recreation opportunities. Table 7-1 presents a summary of parks and natural areas in Cumberland County. Park systems are composed of an interrelated network of park types and park providers. In Cumberland County, municipal parks are the foundation of the park system, providing for active, close-to-home recreation needs. These include recreation facilities for scheduled organized activities as well as places for citizens to play and relax at their own discretion. County facilities are usually resource based parks that people visit for several hours to a day or even overnight if there are camping facilities. State parks are natural resource based parks that are significantly larger than county parks which people visit for a day as well as for overnight stays. State game lands, forests, and fish and boat areas are primarily focused on natural resources but often provide visitors with limited recreational opportunities.

Why should I, a really peaceful individual, write on such a bellicose subject? First, because I have not always been so pacific, having served with the American Expeditionary Force in France during the old war; and, second, I am by profession a geologist. But, what is this geology? Perhaps it is years since you attended lectures on the subject, or maybe you are one of the lucky ones who escaped such an ordeal. At least a brief recapitulation may be tolerated. Geology is earth lore, a relatively new science among man's explorations of his environment. Modern geology has been developed during the last two hundred years. Its application to human needs is hardly half so old. Concerned chiefly with the surface of the earth and its outer crust, the geologists leave to the geophysicists and to the seismologists the investigation of what lies deeper. There are many subdivisions or ramifications to earth science. Physiog- raphy is concerned with the earth's surface features, their origin and characteristics. Through mineralogy and petrology, respec- tively, the geologist attempts to understand the composition and origin of minerals and rocks.
