I write to let you know about all the good things happening here in the Department of English. This year has been the culmination of four years of strategic planning, hiring, and curriculum revision. The nine people who joined the department last year have settled in. And this fall we welcomed two new people: Doug Trevor in Early Modern Studies comes to us from the University of Iowa; and Daniel Hack in Victorian Studies comes to us from the University of Sidonie Smith, Buffalo. This year we also completed the total revision of our undergraduate Department Chair concentration in English, adding the opportunity for concentrators to gain depth in at least one area of literary and cultural studies through an array of sub-concentrations. The U‑M English Alumni Newsletter is published once Faculty members continue to earn awards and honors. Alan Wald has been awarded our a year by the Department of English Language and Literature, newest Collegiate Professorship. -

Together they form the very first military wives choir, helping each other through some of life’s most difficult moments and also becoming a media sensation and global movement in the process. Peter Cattaneo (The Full Monty) directs Oscar® Nominee and BAFTA® Winner Kristin Scott Thomas (Darkest Hour) and BAFTA® Nominee Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe) in this feel good crowd-pleaser. MILITARY WIVES stars Kristin Scott Thomas, Sharon Horgan, Greg Wise (A Private War) and Jason Flemyng (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels). Rounding out the cast and playing the military wives are Emma Lowndes (Downton Abbey), Gaby French (Victoria), Lara Rossi (Robin Hood), Amy James-Kelly (Safe) and India Ria Amarteifio (Line of Duty). Co-written by BIFA award-winner Rachel Tunnard (Adult Life Skills) and award-winning writer Rosanne Flynn (Crossbones, Meconium) MILITARY WIVES is produced by Rory Aitken and Ben Pugh of 42 and Piers Tempest for Tempo Productions. Josh Varney is the executive producer for 42 and Emma Willis and Hana Carter for Twenty Twenty TV. Also, executive producing are Rene Besson, Orlando Wood, Jo Bamford, Josh Horsfield, Emma Berkofsky, Stephen Spence, Liz Gallacher, Hugo Grumbar, Tim Haslam, Peter Touche and Zygi Kamasa. MILITARY WIVES was shot on location for six weeks around London and Yorkshire at the end of 2018 and will be distributed by Lionsgate in the UK. Embankment Films arranged the financing and is handling International sales, co-representing the USA with CAA. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact Jeanne Juneau Telephone (360) 221-8262 or (800) 638-7631 Email [email protected] WICA 2013-14 Theatre Series: Blithe Spirit A Comic Play by Noël Coward Langley, WA, October 3, 2013— Whidbey Island Center for the Arts opens the 2013-14 Theatre Series with a ghostly comedy, Blithe Spirit, on Friday, October 11. Written by Noël Coward and directed by Phil Jordan, the production will run through October 26—just in time to get in the Halloween “spirit!” Blithe Spirit was first seen in the West End of London in 1941, creating a new long-run record for non-musical British plays of 1,997 performances. The play concerns the socialite and novelist, Charles Condomine who invites the eccentric clairvoyant, Madame Arcati, to his house to conduct a séance, hoping to gather material for his next book. At the séance, she inadvertently summons Charles's first wife, Elvira, who has been dead for seven years. Madame Arcati leaves after the séance, unaware that she has summoned Elvira. Only Charles can see or hear Elvira, and his second wife, Ruth, does not believe that Elvira exists until a floating vase is handed to her out of thin air. The ghostly Elvira makes continued, and increasingly desperate, efforts to disrupt Charles's current marriage. She finally sabotages his car in the hope of killing him so that he will join her in the spirit world, but it is Ruth rather than Charles who drives off and is killed. Ruth's ghost immediately comes back for revenge on Elvira, and though Charles cannot at first see Ruth, he can see that Elvira is being chased and tormented, and his house is in uproar. -

OCTOBEROCTOBER HOME CHAT 20012001 THETHE NEWSLETTERNEWSLETTER OFOF THETHE NOËLNOËL COWARDCOWARD SOCIETYSOCIETY THE SOCIETY’S 3rd YEAR BECKONS On November this year the Society will enter its third year of existence. During this formative period it has been very successfully led by Michael Imison as Chair and Gareth Pike as Secretary and General Manager. Michael is to retire from his role in November but will remain on the Society’s committee and stay as a director of Noel Coward Ltd., the charitable company that has responsibility for the Society. Gareth Pike who retired from his post last month will also stay with us on the committee. The Society owes a great deal to their efforts in establishing and directing its work over this period - we thank them both! The new Chair for the next year is to be Tracy Cutting who has been a member of the committee during this last year and is the representative of Warner Chappell the music publishers. Tracy’s incisive, imaginative style and dedication will bring opportunities to develop further the work of the Society. John Knowles has taken on the role of Secretary and General Manager and has a brief to develop and share the work of the Society amongst its members. He and other committee members are keen to see the establishment of new Society groups and events across the globe, regional groups in the UK and activities that involve members in the work of the Society. We wish them both well! John Knowles and Robert Gardiner have also become directors of Noel Coward Ltd. -

118 Book Reviews Peter Holland (ed.). Shakespeare, Memory and Performance. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2006. Pp v, 357. Peter Holland’s wide-ranging collection of essays seeks to fill a gap within studies of Shakespeare and performance. As he argues convincingly in his introduction to the volume, there have been no substantial studies of mem- ory in Shakespearean performance despite the burgeoning field of memory studies and despite the fact that ‘memory is fundamental to the process of performance’ (4). The essays he has assembled testify to the many and varied issues raised by this potent area of study. Some of the topics covered by these essays include acts of remembering within early modern plays; the manner in which audiences remember performances; the importance of the actor’s (sometimes faulty) memory; the ways in which performances (including film and television adaptations) remember Shakespeare’s plays and previous pro- ductions; the roles played by theatrical artifacts (such as costumes and props) in encoding memory; and the remembrance of textual and performance his- tory in major editions of Shakespeare’s plays. The collection is impressive in its scope and contains some excellent essays that suggest new and vital areas of inquiry. At times, however, the pieces tend to be overly anecdotal and given to reading individual images at the expense of a larger argument. Holland’s essay, which is placed in the middle of the volume, acts as a microcosm for the collection. In a single piece, he touches on audience mem- ory (especially his own recollections of particular performances), the actor’s memory (particularly a gaffe by Harriet Walter in a 2002 rsc production of Much Ado About Nothing), the role of the prompter (whose job is to inspire failing memories), anxiety over memory in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Love’s Labour’s Lost, and memorial reconstruction (in both the early modern period and Kristian Levring’s 1999 film The King is Alive, whose cast per- forms King Lear from memory). -
