FACT SHEET  The site for the historic Langston Golf Course was selected in 1929 as a reaction to the demand for an African American golf course in the District of Columbia; construction however, did not begin until the mid 1930’s. The historic Langston Golf Course was officially opened in 1939 as a venue for minority participation in the game of golf with the strong support of Harold Ickes, Secretary of the Interior.  The Course was named after John Mercer Langston, a renowned Howard University educator and prominent political figure of that era.  Langston Golf Course is now on the National Register of Historic Places, maintained and preserved by the and managed by the Langston Legacy Golf Corporation.  In 2002 a partnership was formed with Howard University to open the Interpretive Education Center and in 2003 this program was integrated into the Langston community schools.  For more than 15 years, three junior golf programs have made Langston their home, Masons Army, Langston Junior Boys and Girls and the First Tee, DC; juniors from these programs are nationally and internationally known as The Jimmy Garvin All-Stars and are required to utilize the Education Center.
