Who Are You and Why Are You Here Worksheet Dan Miller, Life Coach Author, 48 Days to the Work You Love Hi this is Dan Miller, your host for this thinking session addressing the question: “Who are you – and Why are you here?” Answering this question is a common struggle for people I talk to – whether they are eighteen and trying to decide what to choose as a college major, midlife at fifty and confronted with an unexpected career transition, or a successful physician, housewife, attorney or pastor who somewhere along the way is asking “Who am I and why am I here?” There is an old story about Akiva, the rabbi, who lived in the same area as Jesus had – just outside Capernaum. Akiva had been in the village to gather some supplies. Walking back to his cabin he was silently reciting scriptures in his mind – over and over again. Deep in thought, when he came to a fork in the road he went to the right rather than taking the path that would return him to his home. As he continued now on the wrong path, darkness set in, and on top of that fog had also settled across the valley. But the old rabbi kept trudging along – unaware that he was getting farther and farther away from his intended destination. Suddenly a voice came through the darkness – “Who are you, and why are you here?” The old rabbi stopped momentarily at the interruption in his reciting the scriptures. And then he continued on – Again the voice came through the darkness, now with more urgency. “Stop – who are you and why are you here?” Rousing his senses the rabbi now realized he was in unfamiliar territory. Was this the voice of God? Straining to see through the darkness he recognized the Roman fortress – the military barracks – and slowly he realized the questions were coming from the sentry on duty – “Who are you and why are you here?” But being a rabbi and a scholar he answered the question with a question. “Young man, how much do they pay you to stand guard and ask those questions of those who approach?” Rather than being defensive, the guard could then see that he was dealing with a man of the cloth – not an intruder. He answered, 4 drachmas a week ($100). The rabbi replied immediately – “I’ll double your pay if you come with me, stand at the door of my cabin and ask me those same two questions each morning as I leave for the day. That is the fundamental question in the Jewish mind – those in Jesus’ time and those of today who are serious about their calling or purpose. And that’s my question for you tonight – “Who are you and why are you here?” www.48Days.net Look for the post-it note for 48 Low-Cost Business Ideas www.48Days.com “The Best Way to Predict Your Future is to Create it” We’re going to address 5 questions to help us shape our own answer to this timeless question. October 07, 1996 Concept Statement TRUE COLORS (working title) is a biographical story of part of the life of a young man who is stricken with the disease AIDS. This young man, Danny Keel, has one last dream, to die in the theatre. The theatre is where he has always found his hopes and dreams, his friends and family, and most importantly the love of his life. This is partially a memory play and partially a present-time lounge act. For his final bow he must tell his story, instead of using other people's words. The audience is made up partially of friends and family and partially strangers. Danny simply wants to bring some happiness into people's lives while giving them some thing to think about at the same time. This also allows him to bring some closure to his life by getting some things off his chest that have been haunting him for years. In many ways, just as Torn Wingfield, not to mention Tennessee Williams, does in THE GLASS MENAGERIE. He speaks about the loss of his mother when he was young, the meeting and then loss of his lover as he got older.

  • Bruises on the Fruit
ruises onon thethe fruitfruit B A BRIEF HISTORY OF NIRVANA & THE EVOLUTION OF THEIR MUSIC by Gary Vehar From the moment Nirvana’s landmark CD Nevermind was released, the world of rock music has never been the same. I for one will always be thankful that that album came out when it did, slightly over a week before my eighteenth birthday. I was a still-wet-behind-the-ears college freshman, away from home for the first time. Just as my life was changing drastically, so was the culture. Music, politics, fashion and art underwent an enormous change as the 90’s sloughed off the last vestiges of the 80’s. Concealed as I was in the quiet town of Ellensburg, Washington, within the tiny confines of my third-floor door room, it was the change in musical guard that first caught my attention. Friends from Seattle regularly brought over dubbed tapes to share with those of us here in college, and among one batch was an advance tape for a band called Nirvana. Nevermind was already causing excitement before its official release of September 24th, 1991. Leaving my friends for the night, I couldn’t get the songs, the sounds, out of my head. About a week later I was in yet another dorm room, listening to a brutish lout rave about the same album. Even at this early date it was obvious Nirvana was crossing all boundaries, even if the fellow who owned this copy (the real CD, this time) made fun of the over-the-top screams that so captivated me.

  • Johnson, Jay Cee (JC) Collection, 1896-1981
Jay Cee (J. C.) Johnson Collection (September 14, 1896-February 27, 1981) BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Jay Cee (J. C.) Johnson, a Jazz and Pop composer, was often referred to as the “composer’s ‘composer.’” Johnson was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 14, 1896, and died on Friday, February 27, 1981, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Manhattan (New York City), at the age of 84. He received early education in the Chicago Public School System. His mother, Ellen, and his father—who worked as a waiter on the railroad, was away from home most of the time—is unknown. J. C. expressed an interest in music at an early age, but his mother, who sang in the church choir, did not encourage her son to pursue a career in music. Later, while studying the violin, a friend began to give him piano lessons, and because of his attention dedication sounds better in learning to play, his mother decided that this would be his instrument of choice. At the age of 19, following the death of his mother, he moved to New York City, where he began to study piano with a man named Sam Patterson. Around 1920, he began to work as a session pianist, working with singers such as Ethel Waters, who sung in his first recorded hit titled “You Can’t Do What My Last Man Did,” and would go on to record many of his songs. Johnson would go on to compose more songs, including his first version of “Travel’ lin All Alone,” with Billie Holliday as vocalist (one of her first significant hit songs).
