But now he's helming a band called The Disciplines. "I liked that the word could connote something scientific and nerdy, and at the same time something sordid and nasty," said Ken. The Disciplines play scruffy balls-to-the-wall rock – 70s Detroit-style. Oh, and three of the band members are Norwegians still studying for medical and educational qualifications. All fuel to the fire for Ken's punky mix of sarcasm and political riffing on latest album Virgins of Menace. So how does an American, now living in France, form a band with three Norwegians? "Well, my Norwegian sucks," joked Ken. "Jeg snakke ikke Norsk!" Ken was approached by the band Briskeby, who had chart success in Norway. "They looked me up, being fans, and we ended up collaborating on a hit single," explained Ken. "Then they broke up. Just like that." So Ken formed the Disciplines with three of the band members from Briskeby. "In many ways, I'm the musical equivalent of academia," said Ken "It's important I publish, but almost no one in the wider world can understand what I do, nor do they even hear it. Thank god for enthusiastic, more successful musicians who scoop me up and give me gigs, right?" After the critical success of their first album Smoking Kills released in 2009, Ken has taken fame and success in his stride.

Roots Report: On the Road Again Okee dokee folks … I am on my way back north going 70mph along Route 95. No, I am not driving. My girlfriend is. I have written my column in odd places before, but never in a moving car. We just spent a week at her father’s in South Carolina. It was interesting to be there considering I am not a fan of the south nor am I a fan of the hot weather. The temperature averaged ABOVE 95 degrees the whole time that we were there. Thank goodness for air conditioning. It took two days of driving to travel the 1,100 miles. We went the long way around and down in order to avoid cities and traffic. No, we weren’t on the lam! Route 95 tends to attract traffic, which we are hitting only 20 miles into our return journey. GRRRRR!!! It seemed an odd time to be visiting SC in light of the church shootings and Confederate flag controversy. Honestly, other than the news on TV, we didn’t hear anything about those issues. In fact, I didn’t see one Confederate flag anywhere. We were kind of in a bubble. We stayed at a gated community for people 55 and over. It was a HUGE place that felt like a small town. They have their own rules and security force. Oh, and alligators! The gators will just hang out in people’s backyards or along the side of the road depending on the time of day. Unfortunately, I only saw the top of one’s head and another one swimming away along a drainage ditch.

  • An Interview with Daughters Guitarist,Keep on Moving: Howling
Anthony Savino Does a Good Job: The artist discusses his evolution and facing the abyss What better way to kick off the new year than discussing Anthony Savino’s thoughtful, ambitious release Good Job, which tackles weighty topics like wealth, work and love — ideas that might have made an appearance in your resolutions for 2020. For a decade, Savino fronted the New Bedford-based punk band Half Hearted Hero, which now plays as Dream Job. Savino’s solo work takes a more straightforward approach and puts the spotlight on the lyrics. Good Job’s unvarnished production doesn’t add a lot of fluff, and the playing is subtle enough to make the songs a vehicle for Savino’s rich storytelling. “North” has a sort of bossa nova lite feel and explores the realities of growing up. “Someone Else’s Dime” is a take on the enterprise that is the American desire to succeed: “One size American dream/I’m free and bored and rich on someone else’s dime/I see the stores and silver circles fill my eyes.” The stripped-down “Work Harder” candidly explores what it means to build your craft as an artist while balancing the need to make money and keep the plates spinning. “Thick Line” has a country ballad vibe and talks about the powerful men called out for their behavior in this more enlightened era. I recently spoke with Savino about the new album and his thoughts on songwriting. Jake Bissaro (Motif): You’re probably best known in punk/alternative circles for your work in Half- Hearted Hero.

Stream Amy Cook’s Gorgeous New Album ‘Summer Skin’ 08.22.12 Marissa G. Muller “I try to be bleak and hopeless but it never works out,” says Austin, Texas-based singer/songwriter Amy Cook, letting out a slight chuckle. The alt-Americana musician maintains a level-headed optimism instead on her mellow slow-burners, like “Waiting 4 the World 2 End,” the opener of her latest album Summer Skin. “That song is an affirmation like, ‘Let’s not sit around and wait for the world to end,’” she adds. Cook’s done anything but, though, in her decade-spanning solo career, where she’s written songs that have appeared on primetime TV shows like Dawson’s Creek, Veronica Mars and The L Word and collaborated with people like famed cowpunk Alejandro Escovedo — whom she met after moving to Austin from California — and Ben Kweller, among others. For Summer Skin, she’s brought in an impressive group of contributors that include producer Craig Street — who worked on Norah Jones’ debut Come Away With Me — Robert Plant, Patty Griffin, Kweller, and a backing band that consists of Me’Shell N’Degeocello, David Garza, Chris Bruce, and Jonathan Wilson. “We recorded the whole record live in about five days with the band in Los Angeles and went back to Austin to do some background vocals and some overdubs,” she says. “That’s when Ben and Robert and Patti came in. Robert had known my songs for a while — [because] Patty, his girlfriend, is a good friend of mine — and [when] he heard “Airplane Driver” he really liked it and said, “Oh, I can hear some sort of mantra bits at the end.” So, he and Patti sang on the end of it.
