Parnell Club Incorporated - Established 1858

Update No. 89 – 31 Oct. 2015 Congratulations to the ABs, Now Go the Black Caps!

Blacktown, Sydney – at Lunch, Day 2., match abandoned Orakei Domain, Auckland – we can grow grass here in October!

The Blacktown pitch – no wonder the Black Caps walked away from their match vs. Cricket Australia XI Mike Hesson’s description of the pitch - “Like a jigsaw with half the pieces missing!” At Orakei, over Sun. 25 & Sat. 31 Oct., 660 runs were scored, 31 taken - something in it for all! Should we invite the Aussies over to play on a decent club pitch? May the Gabba suit the Black Caps better this coming Thursday when the 1st Test vs Australia starts!

Our Juniors Have Started

SOME AT ORAKEI

OTHERS AT BLOODWORTH AND MORE, STILL, AT THE DOMAIN

MANY SPECTATORS

NOT ALL OF IT WAS CRICKET!

BUT THE GAME PREVAILED WITH SOME HARD FOUGHT CONTESTS

JUST FANTASTIC TO SEE SUCH HUGE NUMBERS OUT ENJOYING THE GAME, IN THE SUN!

Men’s Premier Grade – Hedley Howarth Trophy

31 October and 7 November 2015 PAPATOETOE vs. PARNELL Papatoetoe Domain

PAPATOETOE 105 (47) O Pringle 27 (67), B Singh 26 (56), Mike Ravic 4/30 (21o, 12m), Beenash Nambiar 2/9 (6o 3m)), George Harper jnr 1/3 (3), Billy Sanger 1/48 (9) Dave Goddard 2/14 (7) FOW 0, 4, 6, 18, 28, 37, 46, 62, 99, 105

PARNELL 171/5 (43) Tim McIntosh 49 (116), Jesse Simpson 22 (49), Mark Chapman 65 (64), Ben Horne 17* (12), L Instead 2/23 (11), N Ajula 1/51 (12), B Singh 1/51 (8) FOW 8, 43, 152, 158, 160

The junior Harper – a wicket + 3 catches! Tom, the sub, caught BhupinderSingh off Dave ending a 37 run partnership

Plenty of grass on the track and Ben (acting for Dave who will be sitting exams) had no hesitation in asking Papatoetoe to bat despite Ganesh being absent (also exams). Rav bowled their opener with his 5th ball but then Tom Hills, coming on at the other end, tweaked his hamstring with his very first ball. He completed his over but then his replacement, Beenash had the other opener caught at 2nd slip – the first of 3 taken there by George. Rav swopped ends, coming down wind and had further successes. Another to Beenash and then George came on and Ben took a catch behind – 6/37! Only opposition through all this was from Ollie Prngle. He lasted till the total reached 48 when Rav had him lbw.

Dave Goddard into the attack Ben Horne – across to leg to attempt a stumping

Sohal and Bhupinder Singh dug in but Billy Sanger bowled Sohal and, after a final flurry,Dave ended the innings with spin.

BEN HORNE’s ‘keeping – superb, he is yet to concede a bye this season. He has taken 9 catches and effected 1 stumping whilst 608 runs have been scored by opposition batsmen.

All out for 105 – Rav, a long spell, kept it very tight and fully deserved his excellent figures of 21o 12m 30r 4w.

Then the run chase: Sam was not able to get a start but Tim got going with good support from Jesse. Jesse fell at 43 – enter Chappie and he and Tim made hay.

Tim in full flow Jesse moved the score along

Tim and Chappie – two class left handers, what better sight in cricket? Tim, a little more circumspect, Chappie at a run a ball – Papatoetoe’s total was overtaken with ease and only the haste to boost the lead before stumps lead to a tumble of wickets before the close. Ben unleashed a series of reverse sweeps to end the day 66 ahead.

Tim down the wicket Chappie driving

Ben – one of several reverse sweeps in chalking up 17* David Goddard chimed in with just one shot for 1*

In all a most satisfactory day for our Prems. Over the next couple of weeks we will be without Dave Goddard (exams) but Lockie could be back to add an edge to our pace attack. Mark Chapman will shortly be joining the Hong Kong side but Ben Rainger, Auckland U19’s opener last season, is due back soon from Karori and Henry King, too. And there could be other surprises to come as well ……. 2015/16 promises to be a most exciting season!

Premier Reserves

31 October & 7 November PARNELL vs. ELLERSLIE Orakei Domain 1.

ELLERSLIE 95 Rudi Bisschoff 4/42, Mohan Wali 3/7, Prasant Dhanjee 3/22 & 23/1 PARNELL 205/4 dec. Simon Wood 65*, Stu Wood 57, Justin Rosenberg 38, James Mulvey 27 To be continued next Saturday

Pre game warm-ups & stretches Stu despatches another to the boundary

‘SXL 3’ reporting: DAY 1. The Premier Reserves started their two day campaign at Orakei Domain against Ellerslie. Skipper Ryan Turner's day got off to a poor start when an over enthusiastic turbo touch saw him slip a disc in his back. He carried this poor form into the toss which he lost. Luckily the Ellerslie decided they would have a bat, providing the lads the desired outcome.

The opening bowling partnership of Rudi Bisschoff and Mohan Wali made early inroads with some excellent new ball bowling. Prashant Dhanjee continued the good start with quality bowling of his own. The away side never recovered and slumped to be all out for 95 just after lunch.

Stuart Wood didn't make the day any better for the guests. Another display of powerful hitting propelled the side toward the moderate first innings total. He missed an innocuous straight and was dismissed just short of the win. Simon Wood joined Justin Rosenberg who made an important contribution at the top of the order. The pair saw the home side through to the first innings result uneventfully. Rosenberg was dismissed for 38 and was replaced temporarily by Chey Barnes. Barnes received perhaps the best ball of the day, swinging away and jagging sharply to take the top of off stump. Blue Hammel was made to feel welcome as he came out to the middle. His stay was also temporary, a lapse in judgement costing him his wicket. Debutant James Mulvey backed up stand in Skipper Wood with some powerful hitting helping reach 200/4.

The declaration came not long after with the home side hoping to grab a few sticks before the close of play. It was Wali who capped off a good day with the only wicket of the last hour. The victors finished the day trailing by 90 with 9 wickets in hand. Parnell are in commanding position and hoping to push to an outright win next week.

Thirds – 2B Grade

31 October PARNELL vs. GRAFTON Thos. Bloodworth Park 1a

PARNELL 270 Venu Bhamidipathy 57, Mike Gedye 64, Gavin Poole 25, Rob Taylor 24 GRAFTON 176 Elliot Humphries 2/54 (9), Gavin Poole 5/41 (6.2) RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 94 RUNS

Team Manager, Richard Humphries reports: As Dinah Washington almost used to sing, “what a difference a winter makes…” was exemplified by the 3rds this week.

This team has struggled early on over the past couple of seasons as the younger players needed time to evolve their games against wily older opposition, often getting into chorus singing winning positions, but often forgetting the final verse.

A new dynamic has emerged, with last year’s Reserve’s Captain, Venu Bhamidipaty, stepping down to mentor the younger guys. Elliot Jaffe and Peter Hickman have stepped forward and up, enthusiastically organising a mixture of existing younger guys, older club members, and a few newcomers, into a vibrant group, who expect to perform well, and are prepared to put the effort into achieving this.

Newcomer Mike Gedye bowling for the Thirds

A commanding win vs Grafton is the culmination of this new found fervour, Parnell batting first and 7 players reaching double figures, 5 scoring more than 20, 2 over 50, and totalling 270 runs. Grafton struggled to respond, stingy bowling by our openers, Gedye and Nuttall, restricting them to just 16 runs after the first 11 overs, before astute captaincy, saw the change bowlers do the damage. Humphries took his customary quota and a concerted spell by Gavin Poole ripped them apart, collecting a stanza of 5, knocking them off for 176.

‘One Day Premiers’

31 October PARNELL vs. EDEN ROSKILL HYDERABAD Thos. Bloodworth Park 2a

PARNELL 218/7 (40) Chris Horner 69, Rob Samuel 60 EDEN ROSKILL 178 Chris Horner 2/32, Mark Murphy 4/41, 2/41 RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 40 RUNS

Caught this lot between innings (and trousers) – very pleased to have notched up what proved to be a winning total

This is a composite team made up of ambitious, and possibly, senile Presidents, existing OD players, and the overflow from the 3rds. They play in the OD2B comp.

A close game ended in Triumph, with man of the match, Chris Horner, excelling with bat and ball. Apparently, he is in contract negotiations with his employer, and the Finance Director of his company was in attendance. We trust the said FD must have been suitably impressed and await news of any remuneration adjustments.

International Criminal Defence Lawyer, Rob Samuel, also showed his experience. He has never lost an International case, and this firm resolve was in evidence with a composed and resolute batting performance.

Mark Murphy, Captain for the Day, snaffled four wickets, and then blew it by allowing a certain Rod Smith to bowl 2 overs, and the candy man, to the surprise of all, actually took a wicket.

Rod’s subsequent over exuberant boastings to his fellow Presidents later on in the clubrooms, saw the second part of Rudyard Kipling’s poem, Disaster, occur, when they nobbled Murph, stamping on his foot for allowing Rod a bowl, resulting in Murph needing an operation on his toe, therefore being unavailable for a month.

Any donation’s to help speed Murph’s recovery should be handed into the Manager, in a plain unaddressed envelope. Cash only please.

From the Herald on Sunday

Per Auckland Cricket’s website “Here’s a great story from The Herald on Sunday’s Andrew Alderson on the strong numbers of people signing up to play cricket this season:”

“Six-year-old Riley Hoon will don cricket gear for the first time next weekend when the junior season starts in Auckland, with the Black Caps’ sustained success responsible for his, and many other, registrations.

After New Zealand co-hosted the Cricket World Cup and the national side qualified for their first final in March, there has been an unprecedented boost in junior numbers this season. Auckland Cricket have reported a 20-30 per cent increase - clubs are clamouring to ensure they have the resources to deal with it.

Riley’s father Damien says the sport is a family tradition – he played at age-group level for Wellington and Riley’s maternal grandfather John Carson represented Auckland and Northern Districts – but the current New Zealand side have been a catalyst.

“Riley saw the World Cup and I think it registered how well New Zealand did,” Damien says. “A resurgence doesn’t surprise me. New Zealand have been inspirational on the international stage and they performed as a team rather than relying on one or two individuals.

“Their sportsmanship seems to be held in high regard around the world, too. If he could emulate that, we’d be pretty proud. Their values have filtered through to the public.”

The Hoons spent happy hours last summer playing in front of a stumps sticker on their wheelie bin. Riley tended to want to “whack it more than block it” but will soon learn more about the game’s nuances.

“We’re going to the Parnell club which seems really organised,” Damien says. “They’re teaching them the skills prior to Christmas, before letting them play.”

[Johnny Carson was an outstanding schoolboy cricketer for Parnell, AGS and EDCA who went on to represent Auckland and Northern Districts in the Plunket Shield. An immensely talented batsman and very useful left arm spinner, he played 24 1st Class games with a highest score of 77.

We wish young Riley well and hope he enjoys his cricket at Parnell. Also that we catch up with Johnny – will be wonderful if we can have him involved with the Club again! Ed.]

Obituary - TW (Tom) Graveney

Tom Graveney batting in 1962 – from The Telegraph’s Obituary, photo Rex Features

News came this morning that Tom Graveney, that splendid batsman of the 1950/60s, has died. Graveney was a tall, elegant stroke player – a magnificent driver. He came to NZ with Len Hutton’s all conquering of ‘54/55 and was, along with Peter May and Colin Cowdrey, a mainstay of England’s batting post Hutton and Denis Compton.

In 79 Tests, he scored 4882 runs at 44.38. His highest score was 258, vs West Indies in 1957, and hit 11 Test centuries. In his 1st Class career Tom Graveney scored 122 centuries and amassed 47,793 runs between 1948 and 1971.

Hoon Damage on Thos. Bloodworth Park

This damage was done sometime last week – despicable. What mentality brings some idiot to do wheelies and doughnuts on a sports field? Fortunately, this damage was outside the field boundaries but it is a warning that unless proper protections are put in place our new fields on Shore Road Reserve could be similarly attacked.

Lost Property - Last Chance

This bin of clothing and gear left behind in the Terry Jarvis Centre is, really, a disgrace. A couple of months ago it was cleaned out, owners of a few named articles were contacted and some items claimed and the rest given to the St Aidan’s Mission Shop.

In next to no time it has grown again – sheer carelessness of the part of some youngsters!

PLEASE, PLEASE, COME AND COLLECT YOUR GEAR FROM THE TJC! ITEMS NOT COLLECTED BY 31 OCTOBER WILL AGAIN BE GIVEN TO ST AIDAN’S MISSION SHOP

where you can buy them back at very reasonable prices. Note: the St Aidan’s Mission Shop is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10am – 2pm, St Aidan’s Church Hall, corner Remuera Road and Ascot Avenue. Remuer
