INFORMATION FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS

Middle school requirements are explained on the following pages. Use the planning sheets to map out your three-year middle plan for the required 6-period day. We also encourage you to think ahead about the sequence of courses you will want to take in high school. This way you will know what courses to choose in middle school to be prepared for the high school courses that interest you.

MIDDLE SCHOOL COURSE REQUIREMENTS

• Three years of English taken in *6th, 7th and 8th grade • Three years of Social Studies taken in *6th, 7th, and 8th grade. • Three years of taken in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. • Three years of Science taken in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. • Three semesters of Health & Fitness (one semester taken in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade). • One quarter of in 6th grade *Honors Humanities 6 is a combination of 6th Grade English & Social Studies

SUCCESS AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL

Students in middle school are transitioning into a more rigorous course load and becoming more independent learners. Students will begin to practice self-advocacy with , be able to identify when they need additional help, and develop study skills habits that will help them be successful. Students should also consider stretching themselves by taking a course for high school credit, and/or getting involved in extra-curricular activities.

ADDING/DROPPING CLASSES & INVOLUNTARY SCHEDULE CHANGES

Shoreline plans and budgets teaching staff and class offerings based on student needs and interests. Registering for a class is your commitment to take the class if offered. Your registration should be based on course requirements in balance with your interests. Consult with your parents/guardians, teachers and counselor. When you register for a course during your middle school’s designated registration period, you are indicating your interest in a specific class. Your registration form is not a guarantee that you will be enrolled in the course or that a specific course will be offered. Final decisions are based on enrollment, staffing and budget considerations. The following policy applies for schedule changes after registration:

• A student’s schedule may be involuntarily changed to a more appropriate placement by , counselor or IEP manager recommendation. • A student’s schedule may be involuntarily changed by administration to balance class sizes and manage offerings.

2 • Requests for specific teachers or a specific teacher (for example, a certain class during a certain period) will not be honored. In addition, requests to take a semester-long class during a specific semester will not be granted There will only be a limited number of days at the beginning of each semester to consider a schedule change, and students should not count on their request being granted. Schedule changes will only be considered if they do not affect the student’s plan to meet their course requirements and fall within the following criteria; the student has been academically misplaced, there is a true error (i.e. missing core class) or in the event of an exceptional life circumstance.

FAMILY ACCESS & CANVAS

Shoreline middle use Family Access and Canvas programs, which allow parents/guardians to view student grades and information online. At the beginning of each school year (usually in late September), families are provided with instructions on how to access information on these websites. Family Access shows the student’s class schedule and teachers’ names, attendance, report card grades, overdue fines and fees, the balance in the student’s lunch money account, and more. Canvas is an online system that allows you to see your student’s grades, assignments and course information. Please call your school’s office if you need help accessing either platform.

HIGH SCHOOL RIGOR COURSES TAKEN AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL (NEW PROCESS: WAC 180-51-030)

• For any High School Rigor courses completed successfully at the middle school level— World Language courses, , and —students will now automatically have this course record transcribed on their High School transcript.

• If a student fails any High School Rigor course, the school registrar will change the course to a middle school only course, in order for this not to transcribe onto their high school transcript. The grade will remain on the middle school report card.

• At the end of each semester, during both their 7th and 8th grade year, students will automatically have this credit awarded if they successfully pass the class with a D or higher. The letter grade will be included in their high school GPA.

• If the family/student decides to alter the letter grade to a non-numerical grade (such as “Pass”) for any High School Rigor course taken at the middle school level, the registrar will adjust the grade upon signed agreement. The non-numerical grade will not affect the student GPA, but the high school graduation requirement will still be met. (This request may be made at the end of 9th- 11th grade).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Algebra I+: MAT734; MAT735 COURSE LENGTH: Year PREREQUISITE: Math 2 FEE: None OPEN TO: Grades 7, 8 DESCRIPTION: Algebra 1+ is a compressed course taken after Math 2. It combines essential concepts from Math 3 with Algebra 1 content. Algebra 1+ aims to deepen and extend student understanding built in previous courses by focusing on developing fluency with solving linear equations, inequalities, and systems. These skills are extended to solving simple exponential equations, exploring linear and exponential functions graphically, numerically, symbolically, and as sequences, and by using regression techniques to analyze the fit of models to distributions of data.

On a daily basis, students in Algebra 1+ use problem-solving strategies, questioning, investigating, analyzing critically, gathering and constructing evidence, and communicating rigorous arguments justifying their thinking. Under teacher guidance, students learn in collaboration with others while sharing information, expertise, and ideas.

The course is well balanced among procedural fluency (algorithms and basic skills), deep conceptual understanding, strategic competence (problem solving), and adaptive reasoning (extension and application). The lessons in the course meet all of the content standards of Appendix A of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The course embeds the CCSS Standards for Mathematical Practice as an integral part of the lessons in the course.

Geometry: MAT741; MAT742 COURSE LENGTH: Year PREREQUISITE: Algebra I+ FEE: None OPEN TO: Grade 8 DESCRIPTION : This high school level course focuses on using inductive reasoning to test conjectures about geometric relationships and use deductive reasoning to prove or disprove their conclusions, using precise mathematical language and symbols. Students explore more complex geometric situations and deepen their explanations of geometric relationships, moving towards formal mathematical arguments. The Mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout each unit and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations. The critical areas are as follows: congruence, similarity, proof, trigonometry, circles with and without coordinates, and applications of probability. As an extension of Algebra 1, students also engage in methods for analyzing, solving, and using quadratic functions.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Completion of this course will result in a full high school credit and a letter grade reflected on students’ high school transcript. Please see page 3 for additional information.
