Easton Area Middle School (Grades 5 & 6) Handbook & Easton Area School District Code of Conduct I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone to our Easton Area Middle School community! The two years that you and your child will spend with us hold the promise of boundless opportunities to promote and to stimulate your child’s growth and development. They will be two of the most challenging and exciting years in their young lives because these years are critical to the development of a child. The research has determined that the educational and social experiences of an adolescent child often influence greatly the success that the child will attain later in life. Our children are experiencing a period of growth during which they embark on a quest to discover the uniqueness that each one has within him/her. I like the comparison of this journey of self-discovery to that of the Lion, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Man in the “Wizard of Oz”, who sought their hearts, brains, and courage. We hope that we may be privileged enough to share in this exciting time of discovery with you! It is with pride that I commit every member of the Easton Area Middle School community to a partnership with you and your children to facilitate their discovery of “their brains, their hearts, their courage” in a safe environment that fosters a celebration of uniqueness, a respect for one another, and a love of learning. We are honored to be partnering together with you and your child during this school year! I look forward to an enjoyable year with you as we work together to facilitate success for every child who enters our door! Sincerely, Dr. Charlene Joseph Symia PARENTS ARE THE FIRST TEACHERS I dreamed I stood in a studio and watched two sculptors there. The clay they used was a young child’s mind and they fashioned it with care. One was a teacher--the tools he used were books, music and art. The other, a parent, worked with a guiding hand and a gentle, loving heart. Day after day, the teacher toiled with touch that was deft and sure. While the parent labored by his side and polished and smoothed it o’er. And when at last their task was done they were proud of what they had wrought, for the things they had molded into a child would neither be sold nor bought. And each agreed they would have failed if each had worked alone. For behind the teacher stood the school and behind the parent the home. Children from each elementary school within the Easton Area School District are united for the first time in an academic environment at EAMS 5/6. This union presents EAMS with the opportunity to celebrate the rich diversity that characterizes our community and to access resources that will effectively prepare our children to become outstandingly productive citizens who will assume vital roles in their 21st century world. This handbook has been created to facilitate your entrance into our Easton Area Middle School community. Students and their parents are advised to utilize the information in this book as a guide to the expectations and opportunities available to them within EAMS. Welcome to your new school…may your stay with us be a pleasant and productive experience! EASTON AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT MISSION STATEMENT The Easton Area School District respects the diversity of its student population and is dedicated to the importance of developing our students into responsible citizens. We will provide each student with an academically challenging program that enhances creativity, develops an ability to use technology, and encourages critical thinking and problem solving. In support of this mission, we will ensure a safe instructional environment and promote life-long learning. Easton Area School District Design by Excellence (DBE) In April 2003, the Easton Area School Board sanctioned a district-wide initiative, entitled Design by Excellence(DBE), that continues to impact the life of each member of the school district community. DBE entails a continuous, comprehensive review and evaluation of the programs it offers to its children. It regards the past accomplishments etched in the rich history of the EASD, the resources and opportunities flourishing in the present, and the hopes and expectations for the future. Most importantly, DBE is a review process that will ensure that each school in the EASD is continually renews and improves the standard of educational opportunities that it offers to its students.
