From Small States to Universalism in the Pre-Islamic Near East
REVOLUTIONIZING REVOLUTIONIZING Mark Altaweel and Andrea Squitieri and Andrea Mark Altaweel From Small States to Universalism in the Pre-Islamic Near East This book investigates the long-term continuity of large-scale states and empires, and its effect on the Near East’s social fabric, including the fundamental changes that occurred to major social institutions. Its geographical coverage spans, from east to west, modern- day Libya and Egypt to Central Asia, and from north to south, Anatolia to southern Arabia, incorporating modern-day Oman and Yemen. Its temporal coverage spans from the late eighth century BCE to the seventh century CE during the rise of Islam and collapse of the Sasanian Empire. The authors argue that the persistence of large states and empires starting in the eighth/ seventh centuries BCE, which continued for many centuries, led to new socio-political structures and institutions emerging in the Near East. The primary processes that enabled this emergence were large-scale and long-distance movements, or population migrations. These patterns of social developments are analysed under different aspects: settlement patterns, urban structure, material culture, trade, governance, language spread and religion, all pointing at population movement as the main catalyst for social change. The Parthians
THE PARTHIANS This volume provides a comprehensive overview of the history and culture of the Parthian Empire, which existed for almost 500 years from 247 BC to 224 AD. The Parthians were Rome’s great opponents in the east, but comparatively little is known about them. The Parthians focuses on the rise, expansion, flowering and decline of the Parthian Empire and covers both the wars with the Romans in the west and the nomads in the east. Sources include the small amount from the Empire itself, as well as those from outside the Parthian world, such as Greek, Roman and Chinese documents. Ellerbrock also explores the Parthian military, social history, religions, art, architecture and numismatics, all supported by a great number of images and maps. The Parthians is an invaluable resource for those studying the Ancient Near East during the period of the Parthian Empire, as well as for more general readers interested in this era. Introduction The aim of this article is to provide a full view on our current knowledge of the figurative wall paintings of the Sasanian period from Iran, Iraq and Syria. All possible information has been collected, examined and finally resumed to this study. The themes that will be looked at are: the exact location of the paintings and function of this place; iconography (subject- composition-style); plastering, colour use and painting techniques; dating; and lastly the function of the murals (decorative-ideological/symbolical). As conclusion, they will be compared both with each other and with Sasanian art in general. Likewise, attention will be given to the profession of the painters. I just want to emphasize that only published data, drawings and pho- tographs were used (I have not been able to study the paintings themselves) so no new information will be given. Moreover, it concerns a summary but bibliographic references to more extensive descriptions and analyses will be provided. 1 This article is a summary of a part of my MA-thesis which I finished -under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ernie Haerinck- in May 2002 at Ghent University and in which I studied the art of wall painting from both the Parthian and Sasanian empires. These people to people attachments also resulted in interactive influences between these two cultures and arts. Qualitative and quantitative investigation on these interactions is a basic issue in identifying both cultures. The current paper, among all miscellaneous influences of Hellenism on the culture and the art of the Parthian realm, attempts to analyze only the influences of basics and rules of the Greek aestheticism on the Parthian sculpture and come to a historical conclusion based on an inductive method. Archive of SID Historical and Cultural Backgrounds of André Godard's Research Activities in Iran Hossein Soltanzadeh* Department of Architecture, Faculty Architecture and Urban Planning, Central Tehran Branch, Islamic Azad University, Tehran, Iran Received: 09 June 2020 - Accepted: 02 August 2020 Abstract Numerous foreign architects and researchers came to Iran from European countries in the first half of the contemporary century to carry out various activities. One of these figures was André Godard, whose cultural and research activities are of special importance in terms of variety and effectiveness. The present study hence aims to discuss the cultural and historical backgrounds that made it possible for André Godard to conduct different activities in Iran. The main objective of this study is to investigate the historical contexts and factors affecting André Godard‟s activities in Iran. The research question is as follows: What historical and cultural phenomena made a distinction between André Godard‟s cultural and research activities and those of other foreign architects in Iran in terms of breadth and diversity? The research theoretical foundation is based on the fact that the cultural and historical features of a country influence the activities of its architects and researchers in other counties. This was a qualitative historical study. The results showed that the frequency of historical and cultural studies on Iran with a positive attitude were higher in France compared to other European countries whose architects came to Iran during the Qajar and Pahlavi eras. In addition, the cultural policies of France in Iran were more effective than those of other foreign countries. -

ELECTRUM * Vol. 15 Kraków 2009 Gholamreza F. Assar SOME REMARKS ON THE CHRONOLOGY AND COINAGE OF THE PARTHIAN “DARK AGE” A. M. Simonetta, in an interesting contribution to the present memorial volume honour- ing the Late Professor Josef Wolski, once again treats the chronological and numismatic diffi culties of the years 91–55 BC in Parthia. He recommends to examine “the available evidence without any reference to previous opinions”, including his own, and then “try to reach some conclusions”. However, it appears that Simonetta’s primarily objective is to “invalidate” my revised chronology and associated coin attributions that differ from his deductions. I have used elsewhere1 a series of Late Babylonian cuneiform colophons and historical notes to support the sequence of Parthian “Dark Age” drachms and tet- radrachms proposed respectively by D. Sellwood and O. Mørkholm.2 As Simonetta confi rms, I have had the opportunity of reviewing his earlier drafts, detecting and pointing out to him several inconsistencies. Yet, his revised note does not accommodate all of my recommendations. For example, while Simonetta gives Mithra- dates II 30 “annual” Susian bronzes, he claims that I have erroneously assigned to this ruler 28 coins.3 A glance at my work would confi rm that I too have attributed to Mithra- dates II 30 “annual” bronzes,4 not 28, nor even 32 as Le Rider mistakenly does.5 Accord- ingly, and after consultations with the editor of Electrum, it was agreed that to offer the readers the opportunity of assessing Simonetta’s latest work, it would be advantageous if I set out my objections to his preferred solutions in a separate note. -
