Local sailor Dick Tillman (Merritt Island, FL), finished the day in third.

Saturday night featured a wonderful dinner of smoked ribs and chicken, prepared by MYC members. Sunday's forecast was for southeast 20-30 mph and thunderstorms in the afternoon. The RC got two good races off, the first in a backing southwest 8-10 mph breeze and the second in the predicted 20-plus southeaster. Heffernan, with a second place and a not so shabby 11th place throw-out, sealed her victory over Blouin. Martinborough, winning the day with a 1-3, moved up to third overall.

The championship concluded with more food and drink, and awards of miniature hand-crafted wooden Sunfish rudders, created by Noble Awards. The regatta chairmen and the MYC organized an outstanding event. Jim Edwards presented a special award, a Sunfish half hull plaque, to Jack and Marty Bibb for their efforts in helping make the event a success.

Masters Scoring Update By Gai l M. Turluck Class members will note a change in the format of Masters regattas score reporting with this year's International Masters Regatta. Some years ago the Masters agreed that Masters regattas are age group regattas held concurrently and coincidentally a few overall leaders are recognized. It was the Sunfish Masters desire that the most senior competitors be listed first in regatta results, by age group, down to the apprentices. The overall standing is noted in an extra column; this primarily facilitates the awarding of World Championship berths. Sunfish Masters are most interested in having racing in their age group, also enjoying those occasional "age-outs" and "age-ups, " and not necessarily focusing solely on qualifying for the World Championship. Masters like to race for fun!

Hans van der Gulik and Mike Kolvenbach Strong at Rudy Dovale Regatta By Myra Rauchbaar and Alex Roose Again great races have been sailed for the traditional Curac;ao Rudy Dovale trophy, held January 21, 2010.

As the grand maestro Rudy Dovale himself watched the races from his porch, 25 Sunfish started the races. Participants would obtain qualification points for the World Sunfish Championship, which will be held in Curac;ao in 2011. This resulted in a big and strong group of participants as every Sunfish sailor wants of course to compete and qualify as there are limited spaces available for the World Championship 2011.

In the junior's class, the class of the Rudy Dovale races, Mike Kolvenbach showed that he was there by winning all races. In view of his qualities, he will soon switch to the "seniors," who have to seriously take account of him. The A-class consisted of an extremely strong field of well matched participants. Especially in the second race where the first eight boats finished within one-and-a-half minutes of the first boat. During the race boats continuously switched position. This promises many spectacles during the next qualification races as we may expect that the mega stars like Ard and Cor van Aanholt, Niek Kort, and Dolf van de Giessen will also participate.

All in all, a wonderful sailing afternoon topped by the 88-year young Rudy Dovale, accompanied by his charming wife Jacqueline, who personally presented the prizes.

After extreme weather forced cancellation of both the team race on Thursday and opening day on Friday, the 78 boats finally got started on Saturday. Eight to fifteen knot westerly winds prevailed Saturday and Sunday. With a giant starting line to accommodate the big fleet, RC Chairman Cindy Clifto n and her crew did a remarkable job getting off seven races in two days.

The first woman was Lee Parks (Newport, RI), US Sailing Inshore Director. The first junior, weighing almost 120 pounds, was Kathy Remer, 31st Fernando Monllor from Pu erto Rico. Monllor finished a respectable 8th overall.

Saturday night festivities included a gulf shrimp dinner followed by an adventure race invented by Chip Clifton. The adventure race featured night Opti sailing and a safari through the wilds of the adjacent park. Then everyone packed up and the Masters headed for Melbourne.

Windward Leg- Issue 1, 2010 USSCA Regattas

By Cindy Clifton Ron McHenry, What started out as a horrific set of weather patterns ended in 34th two beautiful days of sailing for the Sunfishers at the Midwinters. Thursday's National Team Race was cancelled due to high winds. Most teams did not want to go out and damage their boats, ruining their chances in the Midwinters. Winds from 25-35 knots kept all but a few determined sailors on shore, so fortunately for them, last year's winners are still the reigning champions!

Then Friday happened! Line squalls followed by line squalls made the day unsafe for boating so the first races of the Midwinters were postponed until Saturday. Most took the time to renew friendships, the girls made it a 1novie day, and Malcolm Smith went shopping. A catered chicken dinner and was followed by a showing of the movie "Morning Light" on a sheet tacked to the wall. The movie is the story of young sailors racing from California to Hawaii in the TransPac. Disney funded the boat and David camera crews followed the whole way. The two-hour movie was a Mendelblatt, nice respite from the bad weather. Some of our tenters found a 2nd, leads the hard roof with locals or hotels for the rainy night. Don and Jean fleet downwind Bergman subsequently returned to their tented platform. As usual, Ron McHenry and Tom Katterheinrich lived in their vans. And a group followed Eduardo Cordero to his hotel to see if some of his mojo would rub off.

On Saturday, however, the strong predicted winds did not materialize and the racing was started an hour earlier than scheduled. A low country boil was served following racing. The entertainment for the evening was the Not So Extreme Amazing Race, designed by Chip Clifton. Filling up a tube (with holes) full of water proved hilarious and the sail to the buoy in an Opti was Chip Clifton, 14th hard for Juan Jose Delgado, who sailed out without a daggerboard. He was towed in by Marguerite Koehler. That was followed by a series of knots that had to be tied and then the clue hunt began. Getting started as dark settled in gave just about everyone trouble finding the clues Chip had placed around the island. Most teams gave up in anticipation that an enticing drink was waiting for them at the end. Make-it-yourselfMojito supplies were set up for the racers and Chip took the heat for putting clues in hard to see locations. We will rework this event; everyone had fun but it was a bit too dark for complete success.

Most sailors stayed with locals, thanks to Ursula Olson, making new friends and visiting with old friends. Everyone was glad to see Eric Erickson and Will White who both came by. Colombia Worlds' organizer, and now a Sarasotian, Luis Eduardo Baron hosted some of the teenagers from the DR and Colombia. It was Jean Bergman, great to see some newcomers to the regatta including Mark May, 38th Tony Collins, Greg Gust, and Bill Jackson. Lee Creekmore, David McCary, Ellen Burks, and all of the Caribbean and South American sailors are also a few of the newcomers. Some who came back after many years include Dave Dunn and Chris Friend. Nine countries were represented, including: Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Bermuda, The Bahamas, Canada, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Yugoslavia, and Italy. The Midwinters continues to be a great social event, as well as a very competitive (Photos: regatta. Cindy Clifton)

Awards and door prizes from Tackle Shack followed on Sunday, and the boats were packed for the next great Sunfish experience!
