Wildlife SOS

The Agra Bear Rescue Facility was established by Wildlife SOS in 1999 in collabo- ration with the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department and currently houses 174 rescued sloth bears. Wildlife SOS had rescued more than 600 Dancing Bears from the streets of . This centre is today the largest centre for the conservation, protec- tion and rehabilitation of Sloth Bears in the world. Wildlife SOS has provided reha- bilitation support and alternative livelihood support to more than 3000 tribal families from the kalandar community (bear dancers) to eradicate this brutal practice of dancing bears across India.

Wildlife SOS also provides sponsorship for the education of the kalandar children to ensure that future generations of kalandar do not become wildlife criminals. In addi- tion this Wildlife SOS also supports women empowerment projects where in women are provided adequate training skills for using sewing machines so they can be self- sufficient through tailoring, carpet weaving etc. Support for kalandar girl’s marriages is also provided to ensure legal age of marriage is complied with. This discourages child marriages in the community. Thus, rehabilitating both Kalandar community and their animals wildlife crime is tack- led and moreover giving both Man and Animal a life of dignity.

Vision Today this organization responsible for taking action against animal cruelty, rescuing wildlife in distress, working to resolve man-animal conflicts while promoting and edu- cating the public about the need for habitat protection. Wildlife SOS is committed to working with communities who depend on wildlife for sustenance and providing them alternative and sustainable livelihoods as that is the key to sustainable conservation. Wildlife SOS also emphasizes the value of ex-situ research in veterinary areas, be- havioural studies, reproductive physiology and other fields in collaboration with na- tional and international universities and organizations.

Although Wildlife SOS is mainly known for its work with the “Dancing Bears” of India, we also have active projects to help Leopards, Elephants, Reptiles and other ani- mals. We work on various projects targeted at environment and biodiversity conser- vation as well as reducing our carbon footprint. With the help of our dedicated staff and volunteers, grant programs and supportive agencies, both national and interna- tional, every day they renew their commitment to the animals and to finding innova- tive ways to sustain and grow their mission. Wildlife SOS has formal ‘co-operative’ agreements in place with state governments and forest departments in more than nine states in India.

Wildlife SOS

Mission

Wildlife SOS is committed to saving India’s endangered wildlife and threatened habitats by working in partnership with indigenous communities and creating sus- tainable solutions while inspiring passion for nature through education, animal care & conservation research. Objective

Wildlife SOS was established in 1995 by a small group of individuals inspired to start a movement and make lasting change to protect and conserve India’s natural herit- age, forest and wildlife wealth. Today, the organization has evolved to actively work towards protecting Indian wildlife, conserving habitat, studying biodiversity, conduct- ing research and creating alternative and sustainable livelihoods for erstwhile poacher communities or those communities that depend on wildlife for sustenance.

India’s wildlife is under severe threat – every animal from the majestic elephant and the tiger, to the shy sloth bear and rare pangolins have fast become “the hunted”. While time is running out for these creatures, it’s not too late to help. Wildlife SOS consistently makes a difference to give back to the planet, to give back to nature and help protect the environment and wildlife.
