PAGE 8 | BASEBALL SA BASEBALL SA | PAGE 9 From the PRESIDENT irst and foremost, I would like to take the opportunity Fto thank Mark Snelgrove for his time and effort over the past 11 years as a board member and the last 7 years as President. Mark has contributed a great deal of his personal time in both Baseball SA and Diamond Sports SA, and has put our sport in a great position moving forward.

This year has brought some challenges, with the pandemic ongoing; we were continually adjusting to the challenges to ensure our great game continued. In saying that all the hard work is done in the office by our experienced team lead by Sarah Kelly, Rowena Trevaskis, Laura Bond, Giang Danh, Tyrone Hambly and Riley Moore. Tyrone left us during the year, however returned to assist with the delivery of the Australian Junior League Championship in May. We welcomed Riley Moore who comes with a wealth of knowledge in baseball, including his background in College Baseball. Riley also heads up our High-Performance Program.

PAGE 12 | BASEBALL SA Along with changes to the Board of Directors, there was some staff movement at Baseball SA seeing Riley Moore hired as the Performance Pathway’s Manager. Riley brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience in international baseball, having been born and bred in the USA, played for the University of Arizona and for the Stuttgart Reds in Germany. Tyrone Hambly parted ways with Baseball SA in February 2021 after spending almost 4 years in the role of Pathways and Development Manager, choosing to further his career outside of baseball. I would like to thank Tyrone for his time spent in growing our charter programs and including our regional centres, along with the successful changes made to Super League to align our best senior players with our junior charters.

We also saw Neil Poulton appointed to the position of Officiating Officer, which was a newly created position within the BSA structure. Neil has been instrumental in the appointment and education of umpires across our league and we look forward to working with Neil again in the coming season to implement new strategies in growth, development and education of umpires.

Season 2020/21 got off to a roaring start with the Super League launch prior to the start of the SABL. The new Super League concept going to three teams in line with Little League and Junior League charter teams (Seahawks, Rays and Marlins), proved hugely successful. Super League for the first time since its inception had a naming rights sponsor in Just The Thing Furniture Warehouse and every team had sponsors onboard, ensuring that the competition was self-sustainable. The Northern Marlins became the first team to win Super League under the new model defeating the Southern Seahawks in the grand final.

Regular SABL competitions kicked off in early October 2020 and except for the small two week “circuit breaker” interruption due to a COVID scare in Adelaide, the season went through relatively unscathed. We saw Goodwood and Sturt go head-to-head at West Beach in the Division 1 grand final three game series, where Sturt got up in both games 1 and 2, proving too strong for Goodwood again as they did back in 2018/19.

INDEPENDENT AUDITOR’S REPORT

To the members of the South Australian Baseball League Inc.

Report on the Audit of the Financial Report

Qualified Opinion

We have audited the financial report of the South Australian Baseball League Inc. (the Association), which comprises the Board’s Report, the Statement by Members of the Board, the Profit and Loss Statement, the Statement of Financial Position, the Statement of Changes in Equity, the Statement of Cash Flows and a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory notes for the year ended 30 April 2021.

In our opinion, except for the effects of the matter described in the Basis for Qualified Opinion section of our report, the accompanying financial report presents fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the Association as at 30 April 2021 and its financial performance for the year then ended in accordance with the accounting policies described in Note 1 to the financial statements and the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act (SA) 1985.

Basis for Qualified Opinion

We have issued a Qualified Audit Opinion on the financial statements on the following basis;

As is common for an organisation of this type, it is not practical for the Association to maintain an effective system of internal control over cash receipts until their initial entry in the accounting records. Accordingly, our audit in relation to cash receipted transactions recorded within Administration Income was limited to the amounts recorded as it is not practical to extend our examination beyond the amounts recognised in the records of the Association nor to express an opinion on whether income recorded is complete.

We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Our responsibilities under those standards are further described in the Auditor’s Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report section of our report. We are independent of the Association in accordance with the ethical requirements of the Accounting Professional and Ethical Standards Board’s APES 110: Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (the Code) that are relevant to our audit of the financial report in Australia. We have also fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with the Code.

We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion.

Emphasis of Matter – Basis of Accounting

We draw attention to Note 1 to the financial report, which describes the basis of accounting. The financial report has been prepared to assist the Association to meet the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act (SA) 1985. As a result, the financial report may not be suitable for another purpose. Our opinion is not modified in respect of this matter.

Responsibilities of the Board Members for the Financial Report

The Board Members are responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in accordance with the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporations Act (SA) 1985 and for such internal controls as the Board Members determine are necessary to enable the preparation and fair presentation of a financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

Liability limited by a scheme approved under Professional Standards Legislation PAGE 22 | BASEBALL SA In preparing the financial report, the Board Members are responsible for assessing the entity’s ability to continue as a going concern, disclosing, as applicable, matters relating to going concern and using the going concern basis of accounting unless committee intends to liquidate the entity or to cease operations, or has no realistic alternative but to do so.

Those charged with governance are responsible for overseeing the entity’s financial reporting process.

Auditor’s Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report

Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial report as a whole is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an auditor’s report that includes our opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance, but is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance with the Australian Auditing Standards will always detect a material misstatement when it exists. Misstatements can arise from fraud or error and are considered material if, individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be expected to influence the economic decisions of users taken on the basis of this financial report.

As part of an audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards, we exercise professional judgement and maintain professional scepticism throughout the audit. We also: – Identify and assess the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error, design and perform audit procedures responsive to those risks, and obtain audit evidence that is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion. The risk of not detecting a material misstatement resulting from fraud is higher than for one resulting from error, as fraud may involve collusion, forgery, intentional omissions, misrepresentations, or the override of internal control. – Obtain an understanding of internal control relevant to the audit in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the Association’s internal control. – Evaluate the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates and related disclosures made by the Board. – Conclude on the appropriateness of the Board’s use of the going concern basis of accounting and, based on the audit evidence obtained, whether a material uncertainty exists related to events or conditions that may cast significant doubt on the Association’s ability to continue as a going concern. If we conclude that a material uncertainty exists, we are required to draw attention in our auditor’s report to the related disclosures in the financial report or, if such disclosures are inadequate, to modify our opinion. Our conclusions are based on the audit evidence obtained up to the date of our auditor’s report. However, future events or conditions may cause the Association to cease to continue as a going concern. – Evaluate the overall presentation, structure and content of the financial report, including the disclosures, and whether the financial report represents the underlying transactions and events in a manner that achieves fair presentation.

We communicate with the Board regarding, among other matters, the planned scope and timing of the audit and significant audit findings, including any significant deficiencies in internal control that we identify during our audit.

I’d also like to commend both Darcy Barry and Max Stagg on making the initial 60-man roster for the under 18 Australian team. BASEBALL SA | PAGE 39 HERITAGE COMMITTEE

he Baseball South Australia Heritage Committee was initially formed for the purpose of recording the history Tand managing the heritage memorabilia of baseball in South Australia, but over the last 10 years has also been given the responsibility of recommendations of nominees to the BSA Board of:

Baseball SA Life Membership Baseball SA Hall of Fame Baseball Australia Life Membership Baseball Australia Hall of Fame Sport SA Hall of Fame Sport SA Annual Awards

In 2020 the Board approved the start of the process of forming a Baseball SA Hall of Fame which will recognise a person who has contributed to the development of Baseball in South Australia through either on-field performance, voluntary sport administration (Team Executive Officers/support staff etc.), Baseball Administration (committee members, volunteers etc.), Game Officials (umpires and scorers) and Media.

The committee formed the criteria and nomination form which has been submitted and approved by the Board. This was a long process but the committee was dedicated to formulating both the criteria and form appropriately.

With the potential increase in nominations the committee formed a sub-committee whose responsibility is to scrutinise each application. They then inform the full Heritage Committee if the nomination has fulfilled all requirements as per the criteria and has submitted all correct details and is worthy of presenting to the Board for approval. This sub-committee will also scrutinise all nominations for all BSA Life Membership, BA nominations and Sport SA nominations.

Each member of the committee has been delegated and responsible for the following portfolios:

Ron Harvey Chairperson/Hall of Fame, Life Membership Sub-Committee Member/ BA Hall of Fame Delegate/Umpires Greg Bradshaw Secretary/Hall of Fame, Life Membership Sub-Committee Chairperson/ Country Baseball Robert Laidlaw BSA Historian/Hall of Fame, Life Membership Sub-Committee Member/ BA Hall of Fame Delegate Phil Burgess Data Researcher/Hall of Fame, Life Membership Sub-Committee Member Enza Henty Women’s Baseball Lorraine Dunn Scorers Chris Jones Claxton Shield Club Gordon Penhall Museum

During the year Peter Fischer resigned as Secretary due to ill health. We are extremely grateful for the amount of work Peter has done in starting off the process of the history website, the gathering of procedures and criteria of the Hall of Fame application. He was a diligent Secretary. Peter’s resignation left a huge hole in the committee and has taken some months to get back on track.

Brian Cakebread also resigned during the year and we thank Brian for his work in negotiating with Claxton Club and the Adelaide Giants in the formation of the Claxton Shield Club.

Lorraine Dunn & Chris Jones both joined the committee during the year.

PAGE 40 | BASEBALL SA The website has been progressing slowly over the year, mainly due to the illness of Peter Fischer and the work load of the BSA office staff, but hopefully will be up and running during this year.

Phil Burgess has compiled a huge amount of information which will be able to be sourced through the new website; this will include premierships and medal winners of all grades, State Team and Australian team members and administration positions. Once this is available we will encourage all baseball supporters to access it and if there are any gaps, please help us to fill them in.

Through Baseball SA historian Robert Laidlaw, the heritage committee has a Facebook page with articles pertaining to baseball history, mainly in South Australia, with now more stories going up every month or two. It is a great opportunity for people to reminisce about or understand the history of baseball in South Australia through the stories - on games, people and all aspects of the sport.

After meeting with the Claxton Club, the Heritage Committee collaborated with the Adelaide Giants organisation to form The Claxton Shield Club. The club will integrate all Senior State teams, Adelaide Giants and Bite past members. All have had the Claxton Shield as their common goal and will maintain the Claxton Shield name for past representatives from 1934 when the Claxton Shield was introduced.

As last year’s season of the ABL was reduced due to the COVID restrictions, it is our intent to have a Claxton Shield Club every Friday were there is a home series of an Adelaide Giants game. The Adelaide Giants will manage the entrance passes, etc and organise a dedicated area for members to meet. Baseball SA will support the nights through the Heritage Committee budget.

Merchandise will be organised for members to purchase. A complete list of players, managers, scorers, umpires etc for communication needs will be compiled.

Donations of memorabilia showing the history/heritage of baseball in South Australia can be lodged at the offices of Baseball South Australia, West Beach. All items of interest are welcome (books, photos, clothing, uniforms etc).

Greg Bradshaw Heritage Committee Secretary
