  • Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo
Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo SAINT OF THE DAY 23-03-2021 Twenty-five years of episcopal ministry in the New World, and thousands of kilometres travelled almost always on foot to proclaim Christ to the indigenous people of Peru (and beyond), where the fruits of his boundless charity are still reaped. Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo (1538-1606) was born into a noble family in Mayorga, in northern Spain. After his legal studies he became a professor of law in Salamanca and was then called to preside over the Inquisition Tribunal of Granada. Knowing his virtues, King Philip II proposed him as possible Archbishop of Lima to Gregory XIII, and in 1579 the Pope authorized the appointment of Turibius, who was then still a layman just over forty years old. The jurist took seriously the very high office to which he had been called and within a few months he was ordained priest and then consecrated bishop. At that point everything was ready for his departure to America. On 12 May 1581 Turibius took possession of the archiepiscopal see of Lima, which had been without a guide for six years and was in a situation of serious moral decadence: the Spanish viceroys intervened in ecclesiastical matters, giving rise to frequent disputes between temporal and spiritual power, while few religious intervened to correct abuses. The saint's work was instead immediately energetic, aimed at raising the Church from its subjugation. To those who justified themselves by saying “this was the custom here”, he replied: “Christ is Truth and not custom”. He had to face disputes and ordeals, but Turibius was not discouraged because he was aware of his mission: “The only one whom we must always make happy is Our Lord”.

    N. 180120c Saturday 20.01.2018 Apostolic Trip of the Holy Father Francis to Chile and Peru (15-22 January 2018) – Marian Celebration in Plaza de Armas in Trujillo Marian Celebration in Plaza de Armas in Trujillo This afternoon, at 16.00 local time (22.00 in Rome), the Holy Father Francis presided at the Marian celebration in honour of the Virgen de la Puerta in Plaza de Armas in Trujillo. After greetings from the archbishop of Trujillo, H.E. Msgr. Héctor Miguel Cabrejos Vidarte, O.F.M., and a couple of young people, the Pope gave an address. Following the Marian prayer, the Holy Father crowned and placed a rosary on the Virgen de la Puerta, while children brought candles and sang the litanies of the Mother of God of Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo. At the end of the Marian celebration, after the final blessing, the Pope transferred by car to “Capt. FAP Carlos Martínez de Pinillos” Airport in Trujillo where, after farewell greetings from the archbishop, the Governor and the Mayros of Trujillo, Huanchaco and Victor Larco, at 17.10 local time (23.10 in Rome) he departed for Lima on board a LATAM A319. The Holy Father then returned to the apostolic nunciature. The following is Pope Francis’ address during the Marian celebration: Address of the Holy Father Dear Brothers and Sisters, I thank Monsignor Héctor Miguel for his words of welcome in the name of the whole pilgrim people of God in 2 these lands. In this beautiful and historical square of Trujillo, that awakened dreams of freedom for all Peruvians, we are gathered to meet our “Dear Mother of Otuzco”.

All of the Churches recall her memory under this title in their daily Eucharistic prayers, and especially in the annual celebration of Christmas. The Virgin Mary was already venerated as Mother of God when, in 431, the Council of Ephesus acclaimed her Theotokos (God-bearer). As the Mother of God, the Virgin Mary has a unique position among the saints, indeed, among all creatures. She is exalted, yet still one of us. Redeemed by reason of the merits of her Son and united to Him by a close and indissoluble tie, she is endowed with the high office and dignity of being the Mother of the Son of God, by which account she is also the beloved daughter of the Father and the temple of the Holy Spirit. Because of this gift of sublime grace she far surpasses all creatures, both in heaven and on earth. At the same time, however, because she belongs to the offspring of Adam she is one with all those who are to be saved.
