TILT-UP CONCRETE ASSOCIATION (TCA) Board of Directors - 2018 Nominees Presented by Jeffrey Brown, Chair, TCA Nominations Committee CRAIG COPPERSMITH, P.E. VP, Technical Sales & New Business Development Nox-Crete - Omaha, Nebraska Craig Coppersmith is an Engineer, first and foremost, with a passion for working and collaborating with others to achieve team goals. Vice President at Nox-Crete Products Group, Craig holds multiple Degrees; a Mathematics Degree from Doane University and a Civil Engineering Degree (Structural Analysis emphasis) from the University of Missouri – Columbia. His first position as a Structural Engineer designing curtain wall systems for high rise buildings led to him obtaining his Professional Engineer’s License and a realization that he: 1. Did not enjoy sitting behind a desk “plugging and chugging” calculations 2. A desire for more interaction with people Understanding these realities, Craig’s career transitioned to Project Management and, ultimately, Technical Sales and Troubleshooting. For the past 25 years, Craig has worked for manufacturers of engineered products used in the concrete industry, first at Sika Greenstreak and currently at Nox- Crete Products Group. His career is focused on collaborating with the Project Team, from Design through Construction, serving as a resource to help meet and maximize project expectations. It is a role that Craig embraces with passion. A past Speaker at the World of Concrete, Craig is an active member of several Organizations and Committees, to include: • Tilt Up Concrete Association (TCA) • American Concrete Institute (ACI) • Active Member of ACI Committees – o ACI 360 – Design of Slabs on Ground o ACI 302 – Construction of Concrete Floors o ACI 551 – Tilt-Up Concrete Construction • ASCC Craig and his wife, Juli, live in Omaha, Nebraska with their boys, Cole (11) and Chance (8). They also have a daughter, Brianna (27) who lives in St. Louis, Missouri. KAREN S. HAND, P.E. Engineering Manager Needham DBS - Lenexa, Kansas Karen began working in tilt-up construction shortly after joining Needham DBS in 1998. Trained in tilt-up design by Jeffrey Needham, FTCA, a protégé of David Kelly, she has been instrumental to the success of the concrete tilt-up division for Needham DBS. She has a clear understanding of construction methods as a result of hands on experience and the close relationships developed with design-build clients and contractors. With 20 years of experience in design and detailing of tilt-up panels, including innovative and specialty applications, she is known and admired in the industry. With a Master’s Degree in Engineering Management, Karen has grown the concrete division within Needham DBS and has turned over many of her accounts to next generation leaders to focus efforts on business operations, business development, marketing and sales for the firm. Karen is currently responsible for engineering management, project management and engineering for Needham DBS. In April 2018 she will be promoted to President of Needham DBS where she will go through a year of succession transitioning for CEO Jeff Needham as he prepares to retire. Karen actively participated in the High Wind Task Force that assembled a report in response to the Joplin MO EF5 tornado. This engagement enabled her to work with peers in the industry, gathering information and effectively disseminating it to others. Kansas City companies, Needham DBS and Summit Concrete, worked together with the TCA and the Kansas City Parks and Rec to construct the Missouri Korean War Veterans Memorial which debuted at the Kansas City Tilt-up Concrete Association Annual Convention in 2011. Karen was instrumental in the structural design and managing the project in the short time frame allotted. Professional Affiliations: Karen is a member of the Tilt Up Concrete Association and is a regular attendee of the TCA Conventions and events. She has represented her firm, Needham DBS, as an exhibitor at TCA Conventions in multiple cities. Ms. Hand has stepped up as a leader in her local engineering community as a Charter Member of the Structural Engineers Association of Kansas & Missouri in 2001, serving as Member Services Chairperson in 2001-03, Secretary of the Kansas City Chapter in 2003-05, President of the Kansas City Chapter in 2005-06 and finally served on the Bi-State Board of Directors from 2006-2010. During her nine years of service she also actively organized and performed event planning for multiple Kansas City sponsored Annual Meetings. Karen is also active in her local Concrete Promotional Group as member of the Structural Concrete Group and a speaker for tilt-up related presentations to AIA, ACI, Johnson County Contractors Licensing, Kansas State University, as well as local architectural firms. Karen is currently serving on the ACI 551 Tilt-Up Concrete Committee. The appointment began Spring 2015. Notable award-winning tilt-up projects: The EPA Region VII Science and Technology Center was spotlighted in 2004, receiving the Tilt-Up Achievement Award in Innovation boasting a 32-inch thick panel and named fourth on the top ten list for heaviest panel (at the time). Best Buy at The Shoppes at Shoal Creek received the Tilt-Up Achievement Award in 2007, Zona Rosa Building C in 2009, Korean War Memorial in 2012, Warren Theatre - Moore Oklahoma in 2015, Warren Theatre – Broken Arrow OK in 2016, iFly Overland Park in 2017 and Olathe West High School in 2017. Degrees: Karen received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Missouri – Rolla in May 1993 and earned a Master of Science in Engineering Management from the University of Kansas in May 2013. Registered Professional Engineer: Iowa, Maine, Missouri and Nebraska. Publications: "The Great Wall of Kansas", The Construction Specifier, February 2004; "Breathe Easy", TCA Newsletter, 2006. BOB MURRAY Vice President and General Manager Alston Construction – Edison, New Jersey Bob Murray is a Vice President/General Manager with Alston Construction, one of ENR’s top 20 design-build construction firms in the country. Bob is a third-generation member of a construction family, with more than 35 years of experience in the industry. He has hands-on experience in every facet of the business, ranging from Field Superintendent, Project Manager, Business Development and Project Executive. Throughout his career, Bob has successfully managed the construction of all building types including commercial, government, healthcare, industrial, education and multi-family. A native of New Jersey, Bob has spent most of his career shaping the state that he loves with significant contributions to many civic and charitable organizations. An active member of TCA, Bob was heavily involved in the 2015 Tilt-Up Convention in NJ, and a judge for the TCA Tilt-Up Achievement Awards. Bob consistently meets the client’s timetable because his team of seasoned individuals and younger staff are all trained in the Alston way. Bob’s belief in the Alston way motivates him to continue educating teams to drive them toward success in the industry. His biggest strength is the design end of the process: value engineering to design a building at the best price. At the end of the day, Bob truly loves what he does. JOHN PAESANO Category Director of Concrete and Chemicals HD Supply Construction & Industrial White Cap - Canton, Georgia John Paesano is the Category Director for Concrete, Chemicals, Forming, Tilt- Up and Accessories for HD Supply White Cap In Norcross, GA. HD Supply has over 165+ branches and is the largest national distributor of construction materials across the country. In addition to the concrete products, we also provide our contractors with the products and services for Building Materials, Tools, Equipment, Rebar, Lumber and Safety. John has a BS degree from West Liberty University (Wheeling, WV); an MS from West Virginia University (Morgantown, WV) and an MBA from Samford University (Birmingham, AL). After a long career in sales and sales management with large suppliers such as Chemrex, Degussa and BASF, John joined HD Supply in 2012 and works closely with top suppliers such as Dayton Superior, Meadow Burke and others who provide their products and services through HD Supply for the tilt-up market. .
