Report on activities relating to the Momentum for Change initiative and Action for Climate Empowerment at the UNFCCC Conference in Marrakesh, Morocco (COP22) I. Background The secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement (the secretariat) has recognized the need to give visible recognition to the positive action on climate change already occurring, to encourage successful activities to scale up, going beyond the technological, economic and social tipping point, and ushering in the low-carbon, high resilient society of the future. Taking advantage of the high visibility and international attention afforded to the UNFCCC process, during the seventeenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) and the seventh session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parities to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 7) in Durban, South Africa, the secretariat launched Momentum for Change to highlight successful activities already occurring on the ground. Showcasing activities at this level assists in stirring higher levels of interest and aspiration, whilst also sharing lessons learnt by established practical climate change projects. Momentum for Change currently has five pillars: • Women for Results: recognizing the critical leadership and participation of women in addressing climate change, implemented in collaboration with Masdar’s WISER initiative • Financing for Climate-Friendly Investment: recognizing successful financial innovations for adaptation and climate mitigation, implemented in partnership with the World Economic Forum Global Project on Climate Change • ICT Solutions: recognizing successful climate change activities in the field of information and communication technology. This focus area is implemented in partnership with the Global e-Sustainability Initiative Planetary Health: recognizing novel solutions that balance the need for both human health and a healthy planet, implemented with the support of The Rockefeller Foundation Climate Neutral Now: recognizing efforts by individuals, companies and governments that are achieving real results in transitioning to climate neutrality, implemented in partnership with the secretariat’s Climate Neutral Now initiative. Through its work in promoting Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE), the secretariat collaborates and coordinates with national governments, United Nations organizations, other intergovernmental organizations, the private sector, civil society and youth organizations, to catalyse action for the implementation of the Doha work programme on Article 6 of the Convention related to climate change education, training, public awareness, public access to information, public participation and international cooperation on these issues. Connect4Climate, a global partnership program of the World Bank Group on climate change communication, works to support the UNFCCC secretariat’s work on ACE to catalyse action for the implementation of the Doha work programme on Article 6 of the Convention related to climate change education, training, public awareness, public access to information, public participation and international cooperation on these issues.
