Ever since, her activism and Twitter presence have sparked media attention, catalyzed youth activists globally to organize marches and strike from school, and have drawn critique. This thesis employs McKerrow’s (1989) critical rhetoric to uncover dominant discourses within tweets that undermine Thunberg based on identity and to explore the potential that Thunberg’s Twitter presence might or might not hold for future youth activist response to similar critique. I highlight implications of Thunberg’s Twitter presence on her own and other youth activist’s agency and on the collective identity of Fridays for Future, as well as pose questions that Thunberg’s Twitter presence raises for the potential of a more intersectional, networked youth climate movement. ii Acknowledgements I have so many to thank for helping me along the way while writing this thesis. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (the IPCC’s) 2018 “Summary for Policymakers of IPCC Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5℃,” limiting warming to 1.5℃ would require “rapid,” “far-reaching” and “unprecedented changes” that would drastically decrease human-caused emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere (“Summary for Policymakers of IPCC Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5℃ approved by governments,” 2018). While the science behind the climate crisis is undeniable and straight forward, the climate crisis is also embroiled in complex systems as well as varying ideologies that make taking action political and polarizing. Research on public attitudes and the climate crisis indicates that the “not- surprising politicization” and “institutionalization” of the climate crisis have made and continue to make communicating the climate crisis a “perfect storm” for those striving to effect change (Moser & Dilling, 2011, p. 161). Nevertheless, youth activists globally have taken action to combat the climate crisis in many ways: marching and writing bold messages on signs in support of saving the planet, communicating to their governmental leaders, and advocating for lifestyle changes towards more sustainable living, among other methods. What began in 1 September, 2018 with Swedish student Greta Thunberg sitting outside the Swedish Parliament building to demand climate action from her local government has evolved into a much larger youth activist movement: Fridays for Future. Fridays for Future is a global effort to save the planet, and it consists predominantly of youth activists who strike from school each Friday. In the words of Thunberg: “We are not just some kids who are skipping school...this is actually something much bigger. This is a movement and it will not stop....I think we are only seeing the beginning” (Good Morning America, 2019). While Fridays for Future is larger than any individual youth activist, Thunberg is nevertheless the catalyst of the movement. Her large Twitter following of 4.1 million followers and her deep connection to Fridays for Future make Thunberg’s Twitter presence especially important to considerations of social movement, collective identity, and youth activism. Despite lack of drastic systemic change Thunberg and Fridays for Future call for, Thunberg’s rhetoric and Fridays for Future activists have spurred reactions and acknowledgement from world leaders, have encouraged youth who haven’t participated in activism before to engage, and have changed voting turnout in some areas. German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated on July 17, 2019 that “the seriousness with which Greta, but also many, many other young people, are telling us that this is about their lives, and that their life spans extend further, has led us to approach

Amazon.com has removed The Turner Diaries from its store, along with merchandise associated with the group QAnon, citing violation of its terms of service. The Turner Diaries, which was published in 1978 by William Luther Pierce under the pseudonym Andrew Macdonald, depicts a fictional coup in the US conducted by an underground group of white supremacists. It has been cited as a foundational text by modern racist and white nationalist groups, most famously in relation to the 1995 bombing of the Federal building in Oklahoma City. The availability of Andy Ngo’s forthcoming book, Unmasked: Inside Antifa's Radical Plan to Destroy Democracy, on the Powell’s Books website was the subject of protests in Portland during the week following the Capitol attack, as well. Yet today, one Swedish activist’s fame is next to none. Alast Najafi examines how the “Greta effect” is symptomatic of structural racial bias which determines whose voices are heard loudest. Mainstreaming an intersectional approach in the climate movement and environmental policymaking is essential to challenge the exclusion of people of colour and its damaging consequences on communities across the globe. The story of Greta Thunberg is one of superlatives and surprises. In the first year after the schoolgirl with the signature blond braids emerged on the public radar, her fame rose to stratospheric heights. Known as the “Greta effect”, her steadfast activism has galvanised millions across the globe to take part in climate demonstrations demanding that governments do their part in stopping climate change. Since she started her school strike back in August 2018, Greta Thunberg has inspired numerous and extensive tributes. She has been called an idol and the icon the planet desperately needs. The Church of Sweden even went so far as to playfully name her the successor of Jesus Christ. These days, Greta Thunberg is being invited into the corridors of power, such as the United Nations and the World Economic Forum in Davos where global leaders and chief executives of international corporations listen to her important message. Toward the end of 2019, her media exposure culminated in a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize and an extensively covered sail across the Atlantic with the aim of attending climate conferences in New York and Chile.

Rhode* This article explores the leadership challenges that arose in the wake of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic and the widespread protests following the killing of an unarmed Black man, George Floyd. Lawyers have been key players in both crises, as politicians, general counsel, and leaders of protest movements, law firms, bar associations, and law enforcement agencies. Their successes and failures hold broader lessons for the profession generally. Even before the tumultuous spring of 2020, two-thirds of the public thought that the nation had a leadership crisis. The performance of leaders in the pandemic and the unrest following Floyd’s death suggests why. The article proceeds in three parts. Part I explores leadership challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic and the missteps that put millions of lives and livelihoods as risk. It begins by noting the increasing frequency and intensity of disasters, and the way that leadership failures in one arena—health, environmental, political, or socioeconomic—can have cascading effects in others. Discussion then summarizes key leadership attributes in preventing, addressing, and drawing policy lessons from major crises. Particular attention centers on the changes in legal workplaces that the lockdown spurred, and which ones should be retained going forward. Analysis also centers on gendered differences in the way that leaders addressed the pandemic and what those differences suggest about effective leadership generally. Part II examines leadership challenges in the wake of Floyd’s death for lawyers in social movements, political positions, private organizations, and bar associations.

The Rules of #MeToo Jessica A. Clarke† ABSTRACT Two revelations are central to the meaning of the #MeToo movement. First, sexual harassment and assault are ubiquitous. And second, traditional legal procedures have failed to redress these problems. In the absence of effective formal legal pro- cedures, a set of ad hoc processes have emerged for managing claims of sexual har- assment and assault against persons in high-level positions in business, media, and government. This Article sketches out the features of this informal process, in which journalists expose misconduct and employers, voters, audiences, consumers, or professional organizations are called upon to remove the accused from a position of power. Although this process exists largely in the shadow of the law, it has at- tracted criticisms in a legal register. President Trump tapped into a vein of popular backlash against the #MeToo movement in arguing that it is “a very scary time for young men in America” because “somebody could accuse you of something and you’re automatically guilty.” Yet this is not an apt characterization of #MeToo’s paradigm cases.

School of Media and Communication, University of Leeds May 2019 Word count: 11,996 Abstract The ‘Never Again’ movement, also known as the ‘March for Our Lives’ (MFOL), is the first notable statement about gun violence made by Americans born after 1999. On February 14th, 2018, a former student murdered 17 people at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School (MSDHS) in Parkland, Florida. After Congress failed to ban assault rifles, survivors vocalised their dissent on Twitter. The students’ activism has disrupted the liberal democratic tradition of rational deliberation in the public sphere by circulating a solidary discourse of anger, empathy, hope, passion and humour. While this research is framed around a particular protest against gun violence, it contributes to academic debates about the public sphere, social media, emotion and young people’s political participation. Content analysis and a Foucauldian multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA) examine how a coalition of high school students endeavours to mobilise Generation Z within a digitally-equipped private sphere, subsequently engendering political action in a counter-public sphere resistant to dominant discourses. The activists’ tweets incorporate several performative, linguistic devices to communicate an informal, discursive solidarity. By operating in tandem with Twitter as a conduit of emotion, it disrupts the rational public sphere and advances the political participation needed to sustain a youth-led social movement.
