Later this month I shall be in an off-the-beaten-track part of western Kenya, with other members of our parish, as we make a swift visit to the orphanage which we support via clothing, school fees and in other ways too. On ‘google earth’ a blue roof somewhere in a sea of green fields north-east of Kimilili is all there is to identify it, but to me, and others, it’s a vital part of our lives. It’s wonderful to visit and see the difference that time, care, good food and education can make to children who would otherwise have few opportunities in life. Isaac, our oldest resident at nineteen, has now left and is at university in Nairobi, where we plan to meet him for a short while before an internal flight, and a three-hour, very bumpy road-trip lands us with the children at the orphanage. This involvement marks only one small part of the ways each of us is inter-connected with the world out there beyond the parish, the county, the UK;-think about where you are jetting off on holiday, look at the labels on your food, on your clothes, on your new electrical goods- and see where they were produced. We cannot ignore the fact that we depend on the rest of the world, and the rest of the world depends on us. Climate change only underlines all this. We shall have heart-warming stories to tell on our return, I’m sure, but also new challenges to face, too. There are always more children, more issues. And I know that we can count on your interest, and support. Because it’s personal- you’ve heard our stories, seen our pictures – you know that the orphanage is making a difference. As is every other charity you and we support. Our churches gave in the region of an extra thousand pounds to charities local and national during Lent. Thank you for that. St. Paul urges us to ‘keep on keeping on’. That includes generosity across a wide and inter- connected spectrum. We only imitate in this respect a wildly generous God, and can never out-give Him. I pray my generosity and yours may be something that’s at the forefront of our lives. So we make a difference for others. Your vicar, Roy 01423 359003/ [email protected].

NEWS FROM THE CHURCH OF THE EPIPHANY TOCKWITH

To most people May is the favourite month of the year. We forget the dullness of the winter months and enjoy the warmer days as emergence of new growth in the spring brings us blossom and greenery in gardens, hedgerows and countryside. This new life is at the root of many centuries -old traditions and customs which are observed during May and May Day is celebrated across the country with different festivities. Maypole dancing is a popular children’s activity in schools and on village greens whist morris dances are performed in towns and villages. Some of the dances reflect the movements and actions in planting crops and are thought to originate from fertility rites to encourage growth and good harvests. Tockwith has its own May day celebrations on 7th May.

At the Annual General Meeting of the Village Church Committee on 4th April we heard not just how busy the church was in the community but further afield with support for the Church Urban Fund and the St Dorcas’ Orphanage in Bungoma. Three of our church members and Rev Roy are travelling out to the orphanage at the middle of this month and will be delivering items gifted by the village and school. We look forward to hearing about their visit very soon. It is hard living in the comfortable surroundings we do to forget not too far away from us there are people living in hardship. The community of Tadcaster have still not recovered from the after effects of the flooding and some have still not returned to their own homes or businesses. Church members made additional donations in their offertory collection during lent and £214 was sent from this church to the Tadcaster Flood Relief fund. A new Food Bank has started in Wetherby and Tockwith is now within its catchment area. Please leave you donated items in the church porch as normal.

Don Hale and Jenn Waller stood down from the VCC and Janet Marriner was voted on to the Committee. Don who is now in his 90’s has been a stalwart member of the VCC and has been a great service to the church. He is passionate about the Companions Drama Group and still hosts home readings in the hope that one day they will stage a production in church. Jenn has been doing church rotas for several years endeavouring to ensure that on service days there are sufficient people to carry out the various duties. Thank you both for all you have done and continue to do.

By the time you read this Archbishop Sentamu will have visited Tockwith as part of his Pilgrimage around the Diocese. He is without doubt a most charismatic church leader and there could not be a more dedicated person to the Christian faith if you were seeking a role model. On 16th April we welcomed Gospel Choir for their first ever visit to Tockwith and it will probably not be their last. Their enthusiasm over flowed and their harmonies were brilliant. So many of the choir stepped up and did solo items you felt that each and everyone of them could quite easily have solo singing careers themselves.

Church members will once again be hosting the TEA TENT at the Tockwith Festival. Come along for a rational tea with a choice of all your favourite cakes, who could possible resist that lemon drizzle cake or Victoria sandwich cake? If you are able to donate any cakes or biscuits then please contact Karen on 01423 358979.

CONFIRMATION CLASSES Some of you have enquired over recent weeks about Confirmation and I can now confirm that Rev Roy will be running some classes later this year. Timing is likely to be end September/early October. A date has been booked for a Confirmation Service for Sunday 4th December.

If your child is interested in this please let me know. It would be good to have a group as it will be good fun to do it together. If you have any questions please see me at Youth Club or church. Thanks Angela Churchwarden - Tockwith UNITED PARISH SERVICE Celtic Holy Communion 10am Sunday 29th May 2016 Church of the Epiphany Tockwith

Celtic spirituality has deep roots for us here in the north, and the wider church has not been slow to rediscover the treasures and insights of our earliest Christian forefathers. Once a quarter we try as a parish to worship in a slightly different way, hence the Celtic Service in Tockwith.

Usual refreshments following the service; come along and try a slightly different slant on how we do church that morning!

It’s a great way to keep in touch with busy mums and dads and remind them of events that are coming to church. We pop lots of photos on of various events at church.

VOLUNTEERS Volunteers are not paid, not because they are worthless but because they are priceless. The smooth running of your church is reliant on volunteers in various areas from church cleaning, grass cutting, duties during services and helping out at various fund raising activities, we are always on the lookout for helpers. Eight of us set off in Thorp Arch from The Pax; perhaps the pub least likely to entertain a bar room brawl. The interest starts immediately with quaintly cottaged village green and exposed Crunchie-coloured limestone crags and continues over the River Wharfe by one of the most picturesque bridges in Yorkshire.

Everywhere is evidence of Boston Spa’s watering hole glory days: elegant Georgian buildings and queerly shaped stone booths, not least the Bath Houses we passed by on the Ebor Way. Here very rich people would pay to be dunked in icy cold tubs. Oh if only they were still in use! Many today would gladly provide the service for free, should our celebrities and fat cats choose to visit.

After skirting the old chain link fences of the Papyrus paper factory, now being developed for housing and a nature reserve (NB a brownfield site) we passed under the significant Wharfe Bridge which once bore the railway line from Wetherby to Church Fenton.

The footpath turns right soon after this as it joins our old friend The Rudgate; as everyone knows, a Roman Road, but here reduced to a farm track. We crossed over Tadcaster Road and got as far as Toulston, a collection of stone farm buildings and dwellings which is close by a deserted mediaeval village. A plaque was spotted by the path which declared that “On this spot nothing happened.” How interesting, we all thought.

The path became impassable because of a blocked conduit and we had to turn back and walk for a short way along the A659, before turning off along Bar lane towards Clifford. We crossed Firgreen Bridge then followed the public footpath along Carr Beck. This was a charming section of the walk with the waters of the beck running remarkably clear down a tree lined dell.

Just before we reached Low Mills Farm we came across two artificial stepped ponds full of watercress. Was this the site of a now defunct Boston Spa watercress industry? The bleached bones of a ribcage belonging to some mammal floated to the surface. We became discouraged from tasting the stuff as part of our research.

We went down a ginnel and came back onto the river bank and were soon at our starting point. About 6 miles. The pub (as always) was shut.

Our May walk will go at 2.00pm on Monday May 9th from MacDonalds in the St James Retail Park, Knaresborough. 6.5 miles and hopefully there’ll be bluebells. All welcome. Please come along. Pete Pozman 01423 359731 07854 313112

Craft Club

The Craft Club meets in Tockwith Village Hall every Monday afternoon during term time, between 1 and 3pm. We enjoy a wide range of crafting activities, learning new skills and making beautiful things whilst having a good natter. You don’t need to be an experienced crafter to join. Everyone is welcome. Come and have a go. Just £2 per week, including refreshments. Your first week is free.

The group is currently making a quilt for Martin House in Boston Spa. It is made from patchwork and applique squares and has a nautical theme reflecting the links that the charity has with Whitby. We hope to have it completed for use by the end of July. The photograph shows some of our members laying out the squares before starting the job of ‘sashing’ them together

Tockwith C.E. Primary School

The end of March brought some celebrities to Tockwith School in the form of BBC Look North’s Paul and Harry. The children were thrilled to wave them off on the last stage of their 3 counties on 3 legs Sport Relief journey. We are really proud to announce that we raised over £1000 for Sport Relief this Year!

We also held a wonderful Easter Service in church and a parents lunch prior to the Easter break.

"I did find it rather disconcerting," the preacher admitted.

"It's not a reflection on you, sir," insisted the church-goer. "Ralph has been walking in his sleep ever since he was a child."

Official figures show has lowest crime rate in - Published (Thursday 21 April 2016), the "Crime Statistics for England and Wales, year ending December 2015" report has placed the North Yorkshire Police area as the lowest crime location in England.

There were a total of 36,335 crimes in North Yorkshire giving a crime rate of 45.1 per 1,000 of the population. While this reflects a 5% rise in crime in comparison to the same period the previous year, it is below the 8% increase in England and Wales and takes into account improved crime recording standards nationally.

Broken down into the main crime categories, the Office of National Statistics’ figures for North Yorkshire show:

 Drug offences decreased by 7% (1,881 crimes in total, 151 fewer crimes)  Possession of weapons offences down by 22% (178 crimes in total, 51 fewer crimes)  1% decrease in theft offences (16,934 crimes in total, 233 fewer crimes)  Theft from person down by 9% (482 crimes in total, 49 fewer crimes)  All other theft offences down by 8% (4,708 crimes in total, 389 fewer crimes)  Overall burglary increased by 4% (4,130 crimes in total, 141 more crimes of which 50 were dwelling and 91 non-dwelling burglaries)  Criminal damage and arson went up by 9% (5,641 crimes in total, 442 more crimes)  1% increase in Vehicle Offences (2,266 crimes in total, 19 more crimes)  Robbery increased by 24% (168 crimes in total, 32 more crimes)  Sexual offences went up by 18% (1,150 crimes in total, 179 more crimes). As previously highlighted, this rise is regarded as a positive reflection of the confidence victims have in North Yorkshire Police, particularly those making historical complaints. This has been influenced by Operation Yewtree and Operation Hibiscus (Jimmy Savile/Peter Jaconelli investigations), and the opening of a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) in York two-and-a-half years ago  Violence against the person went up by 22% (8,572 crimes in total, 1,570 more crimes). Of these crimes, almost half - 4,156 - come under the Violence Without Injury category. This is largely attributable to the Violence without Injury category. This includes Common Assault and Harassment offences. Recent analysis confirmed this rise is linked to improved recording following a recent HMIC inspection, an increase in historical reports, increased pro-activity around enforcement of orders and improved victim confidence  Public order offences increased by 4% (1,267 crimes in total, 50 more crimes)  Miscellaneous crimes against society, which includes the possession and publication of extreme sexual images, remained at the same level with 544 crimes in total  Shoplifting increased by 1% (4,040 crimes in total, 45 more crimes)  Bicycle theft remained at the same level with 1,308 crimes in total

Assistant Chief Constable Paul Kennedy said: “North Yorkshire Police remains determined and resolute in our efforts to keep people safe from a range of dangers, including the emergence of cyber-based crime. Our officers, staff and volunteers work around the clock, every day of the year, targeting and disrupting criminal activity across the county and beyond our force borders. Our Road Crime Teams and Roads Policing Group officers, working in tandem with the Force Control Room and intelligence officers using advanced automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology, are at the forefront of this proactive approach to policing. There will be no let-up from North Yorkshire Police, particularly in those areas showing an increase. We are constantly striving to improve the way we operate and provide the very best service possible for the people and communities we are proud to serve.”

TICKETS £10 including light refreshments Available from Liz Schmidt 01423 358538 [email protected] Linda Thornber 01423 358967 [email protected] [email protected] Revised plans for the Linden Homes Development 15/01484/FULMAJ Update The planning committee were due to make a decision on the Linden Houses development on 12th April but because a number of key people from Highways, Yorkshire Water and the Education Authority could not attend to answer questions it was decided to defer the application. A new date was set for 26th April. The outcome cannot be reported on in this magazine as it was at the printers on this day.

The Parish Council’s concerns have not changed and following the floods and sewerage problems over the Christmas and New Year period they have asked for assurances that no development should take place without guarantees from developers that the necessary infrastructure will be put in place to prevent similar occurrences again. The Parish Council are far from confident that the sewerage works in Fleet Lane can cope with the additional houses planned without substantial investment. It is for this reason that we have contacted Yorkshire Water and asked for this application and the Lonsdale Development (Evans) to be investigated further.

We also believe that if the two developments are to go ahead the provision of two additional passing places in Southfield Lane is inadequate provision for the expected additional traffic. The road needs to be two lanes in its entirety. If this is not done we will seek that the existing passing places be improved and enlarged as they were only meant to cater for the occasional farm vehicle.

It is also illogical and devoid of common sense that the two developments have to be considered separately. We believe that the two developments are so intrinsically linked that their impact needs to be considered together.

In 2015, the Corporate Customer Service Team from HBC introduced a new service for customers to receive information about council services and or promotions and have received a very positive response to this service. So far we have sent out a number of texts and emails including informing customers of alternative waste collection services over the bank holiday periods and details of the expanded recycling service. This service has not been widely advertised. If you would like to personally receive information on Council Services and/or promotions please email [email protected] with Your house number Your postcode Your personal mobile number Your personal email address and they will add you to their list. The Parish Council recently signed an on line petition asking for the right to appeal planning decisions

The Government has responded to the petition you signed – “Give parish councils the right to appeal planning decisions.”.

Government responded:

The Government places great importance on community involvement in the planning system. Parish councils have statutory rights to contribute their views in the planning process.

The planning system is centred on community involvement. Communities, including parish councils and individual members of the public, have statutory rights to become involved in the preparation of the Local Plan for their area, through which they can influence development in their area. The local community can also come together to produce a neighbourhood plan, which sets out how the community want to see their own neighbourhood develop. Neighbourhood plans are often initiated by parish councils. Local and neighbourhood plans form the basis for decisions on planning applications.

In addition to input on local plans and neighbourhood plans, which set out the local development strategy, communities are also able to make representations on individual planning applications. Interested parties can raise all the issues that concern them during the planning process, in the knowledge that the decision maker will take their views into account, along with other material considerations, in reaching a decision.

The right of appeal following the refusal of an application is an important part of a planning system which controls the ability of an individual to carry out their development proposals. The existing right of appeal recognises that, in practice, the planning system acts as a control on how an individual may use their land. As a result, the Government believes it is right that an applicant has the option of an impartial appeal against the refusal of planning permission. This existing right of appeal compensates for the removal of the individual’s right to develop.

However, the Government does not believe that a right of appeal against the grant of planning permission for communities, including parish councils, is necessary. The Government considers that communities already have opportunity to guide and inform local planning issues via Local Plans and Neighbourhood Plans, and it would be wrong for them to be able to delay a development at the last minute, through a community right of appeal, when any issues they would raise at that point could have been raised and should have been considered during the earlier planning application process. The Government does not think that the planning system would benefit from the grant of a community right of appeal which would lead to added delay, uncertainty and cost for all those involved.

A NOTICE RE: BAPTISMS

Baptisms take place within our normal services – usually a service which will be a Holy Communion plus Baptism. This is because Baptism signifies a welcome into the church, and the beginning of a Christian journey. It only makes sense therefore, if this sacrament takes place within the worshipping community, who along with the family, welcome the child into God’s great family.

Baptism can only take place when a priest is present at a service, and if you are thinking of having your child baptized, you need to give a long ‘lead time’ to the clergy. It may not be possible for a priest to be available on the Sunday you have in mind, and you may need to be flexible over the date, although every effort will be made to meet your wishes. In the first instance, please contact one of the Wardens to arrange a date.

Please note: Remaining Allocated Baptism dates for 2016 - 11th September

Your attention is drawn to part 2 of the history, which provides a glimpse into the lives of the people who have influenced the journey here at St Helen’s. Strong forthright individuals like, The Hagets, Lord Wharton, The Vavasours, Lady Sarah Hewley and others, they all made a difference, which we are grateful for.

We hope you will enjoy the account, which does not profess to be an academic work but simply a readable alternative to the archive material available. We suggest you find a quiet corner with a glass of wine or better still a ‘cuppa’ and absorb the moment of Bilton W.I. singing Jerusalem in church during WW1 (Lyrics included – so go for it!!!). It could be you find inspiration from reference to the ‘Bible Lands.’ Hear how lord Wharton issued ‘Coal money’ to parents of children who were to learn passages from the Bible, to achieve his awards. If Medieval England is your pleasure then the Vavasours/Hagets with their Royal connections cannot fail to impress. Last but not least is Lady Alice Vavasour, her story and connection with Bilton and surrounding villages, takes us to the heart of life in the Medieval Ainsty. There is a strong possibility that she and our female effigy of the late C13 are one of the same. Please Enjoy!

A selection of delicious homemade cakes

Through the kitchen door Coffee & Cream Gateau with Walnuts

Ingredients 4oz/125g soft margarine 4oz/125g caster sugar 2 large eggs

4oz/125g self-raising flour 1 rounded teaspoon of baking powder ½ pint of strong coffee, sweetened with 2 teaspoons of sugar 1 tablespoon of brandy (optional), if not using brandy, use 1 teaspoon of brandy flavoured essence ½ pint of double or whipping cream 8-10 shelled walnut

Method You will need two 8-9 inch sandwich tins. Grease and line the two tins with greaseproof paper. Collect all the cake ingredients and place in a large mixing bowl. Whip them all together until the mixture becomes lighter in colour and slightly fluffy. It should drop off the spoon easily with a little shake. Divide between the two prepared tins and place in a pre-heated oven at gas mark 8 or 350F, 170C (if you have a fan assisted oven follow instructions for your cooker for Victoria sponge) for about 18-20 minutes, until the centre can be pressed lightly and doesn’t leave an indentation. When cooked the cake should be a light golden brown. Cool on a wire rack until nearly cold. Return to the tins without the greaseproof and prick all over with a fork. Take the coffee and add the brandy or brandy essence. Pour a ¼ pint evenly over each sponge and let it soak in. Whip the cream until firm but easily spreadable. Place on sponge on a pretty dish taking care not to drop the cake as the coffee mixture will have made it a bit difficult to handle. (If the worst happens andit breaks up, just push it into shape again!). Spread the cream all over it, keeping about a third for the other half. Place the other sponge on top and spread the remainder of the cream over it. Fork it into swirls and then decorate with the walnut halves.

We sad to report the death of Ethel Alton (96 years) mother of Edward Alton and long- time supporter of the Show who since the purchase of our Show field has so generously made available a field adjacent to the main show field for car parking. Mrs Alton was a gentle person, never one to make a fuss and always happy to assist the Show Society in improving our facilities. We send our condolences to Edward, Dee and family.

Yes it is Christian Aid Week again. Thank you to all the willing collectors, giving their time freely and to all who put something in the red envelopes, which should appear. 7 million envelopes were delivered in May last year and the week raised 11million pounds – more than half from house to house collections. We in Tockwith have been giving to this once a year collection which provides relief to people in need whatever their faith, for over 30 years. And it is working, there are many less people living in absolute poverty than 40 years ago. However, climate change, droughts and floods plus the cruelty of war means people still need our help. Please give what you can, all donations welcome. Thank you. A prayer for Christian Aid Week

This red envelope, Lord, has been put through my letterbox. It seems such a small thing, In the face of such global hunger, poverty and injustice.

And yet, small and slight as it is, this red envelope is a sign, a symbol, of an unwillingness to do nothing, to let the powers and principalities of entrenched inequality remain unchallenged and unchanged. Thank you for these red envelopes, for those who deliver and for those who fill them.

Let your blessing Lord God be on the work of Christian Aid and people of good will everywhere who seek and pursue your peace. Amen May 2016

MARSTON MOOR PROBUS CLUB

At their meeting on Tuesday 22rd March 2016 Mr Malcolm Coward introduced Mr Geoff Craggs to talk about “65 years as a Radio and TV engineer”.

Mr Craggs started working with radios at the age of 8 and after leaving Knaresborough Grammar School at the age of 15 he was an apprentice at a radio and electrical shop in Knaresborough High Street. He studied on a correspondence course with EMI to pass radio theory and qualified fully when he was 18. In 1950 he went into National Service and became a radar engineer. In 1952 TV started as a full service and a 9 inch Pye TV cost 49 guineas which was very expensive when you consider Mr Craggs was paid £3 per week! Mr Craggs related a number of amusing stories about visiting homes and farms to collect and deliver radios and TVs and after a few changes in employers Mr Craggs started his own business in Boroughbridge which of course continues with his son in the lead position. Mr Craggs’ first love is still radio but times change and modern TVs have almost eliminated repairs since they are more reliable and “repairs” when they are done simply involve changing a plug in panel.

Mr Craggs answered a number of questions and in thanking him Mr Coward described him as a “James Herriot” of radio and TV because of the amusing happenings during his work.

BBC Breakfast host who honours the Sabbath

The new host of BBC Breakfast, Dan Walker, is to be given Sundays off because as a dedicated Christian he refuses to work on the Sabbath.

Dan Walker, 38, was a sports presenter before replacing Bill Turnbull. He is the son of a Baptist preacher, and has reportedly built his career around his religious beliefs. On first becoming a television presenter, fronting sports events and hosting Football Focus on BBC One, Dan struck a deal that meant he did not work on Sundays. “I was convinced that it was the right thing to honour God… Observing the Lord’s Day is a great privilege and brings with it loads of blessings.”

BBC Breakfast has an average daily audience of six million viewers. Dan Walker will continue presenting Football Focus.

Do you enjoy painting or drawing? Perhaps you like the idea but have never got round to it. Whether you are a beginner or more experienced you will be most welcome at Tockwith Art Group.

Join us for two free (taster) evening sessions.

We meet on Monday evenings (school term time) from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in Tockwith Village Hall.

We also host occasional demonstrations and workshops by professional artists. Visitors are very welcome to join us. Entrance is £3.00 ( includes refreshments)

THOUGHT4TOMORROW Personal reflections by Henry Woods

We have all just celebrated The Queen’s 90th Birthday, and it is timely to reflect on the notable example to all of us which Her Majesty has set . Throughout her reign she has exemplified to all her people her dedication to the concept of duty. She has carried out the duties of the Sovereign with dignity and warmth, together with a clear interest in the work and pursuits of her subjects. At all times she has been a true Christian, and a zealous Head and Supreme Governor of the Church of England. It is one of the glories of the Book of Common Prayer is that we pray for The Queen in Evening Prayer and during Holy Communion. The Liturgical Commission need to look again at Common Worship to explain to the laity why they omit the Head of the Church. The argument that this is no longer relevant does not hold water when one considers that The Queen approves all nominations to be Archbishops and Bishops, all of whom swear an oath of allegiance in person to Her Majesty.

It all depends on whether we regard an oath as binding or merely as a means to get at the truth in a court of law. The Queen takes the view, as evidenced in her radio broadcast from South Africa and in the terms of the Coronation Oath, that in her own words “ I dedicate my life to your service”.

Let us therefore give thanks not only for The Queen’s devotion to her people but also for the dedication of so many at local level. In the Church we should salute the Priest-in-charge, Church-wardens, the Chairman of the Village Church Council and all the volunteers who contribute so much time and effort to Church affairs. In the village we should pay tribute to the Parish Council, and the volunteers who run the village hall. Until a few years ago UK was almost unique in the extent of voluntary effort on which our society ran. Even today we lead in this field and long may this last.

See you in Church.

Archdeaconry of York Prayer

Generous God, you look upon us with love and mercy.

Build up your people in this Archdeaconry of York, we pray, and make your churches places of generosity and welcome, that we might nurture disciples of your Son.

May we seek to work as partners in mission, desiring the guidance and strength of the Holy Spirit, as we live out your Gospel in our parishes.

This we ask in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. THE DIOCESE Archbishops call for ‘great wave of prayer’ for evangelism during Pentecost

The Archbishops of Canterbury and York are inviting churches to pray for the evangelisation of the nation during the week leading up to Pentecost Sunday. The Archbishops have written to every serving parish priest in the Church of England expressing their longing “to see a great wave of prayer across our land, throughout the Church of England and many other Churches” from 8th-15th May.

The week of prayer will culminate in ‘Beacon events’ around the country over Pentecost weekend, where people will pray for the renewal of the Holy Spirit and the confidence to share their faith. In their letter the Archbishops said: “At the heart of our prayers will be words that Jesus Himself taught us – ‘Thy kingdom come, thy will be done.’

“It is impossible to overstate the life-transforming power of the Lord’s Prayer. It is a prayer that is reassuring enough to be on the lips of the dying and yet dangerous enough to be banned in cinemas. It is famous enough to be spoken each day by billions in hundreds of languages and yet intimate enough to draw us ever closer into friendship with Jesus Christ. It is simple enough to be memorised by small children and yet profound enough to sustain a whole lifetime of prayer. When we pray it with sincerity and with joy, there is no imagining the new ways in which God can use us to His glory.”

The Archbishops are suggesting various ways churches can engage with the week of prayer. These include holding a day or week of continuous ‘24/7’ prayer as parishes, teams or deaneries; saying special prayers in Sunday worship; prayer walking; or handing out a novena prayer card to every congregation member.

The Beacon events will take place in the following places: St Paul’s Cathedral (Saturday 14th May) – hosted by the Bishop of London, the Rt Revd Richard Chartres, and Pete Greig, founder of 24/7 prayer, with sung worship led by Tim Hughes and Jake Isaac. Durham Cathedral (Sunday 15th May) – with sung worship led by Lou Fellingham. Coventry Cathedral (Sunday 15th May) – with sung worship led by Noel Richards. Winchester Cathedral (Sunday 15th May) – with sung worship led by Matt Redman. St Michael le Belfrey, York (Sunday 15th May) - hosted by Matthew Porter & Miriam Swaffield with sung worship led by Tom Holmes Canterbury Cathedral (Sunday 15th May) – hosted by Archbishop Justin Welby and Pete Greig, with sung worship led by Tim Hughes.

Archbishop Justin will send a message via live video link to other Beacon events taking place at the same time as the Canterbury event. Partners in the week of prayer initiative include 24-7 Prayer, HOPE, the World Prayer Centre, the Neighbourhood Prayer, Network, and the National Day of Prayer and Worship. Jottings from the Methodists …… From The Methodist Manse

The saying " better together" has been used by a number of people and organisations over the years. In a service I took recently I asked the congregation what they thought was best done together. One little boy was keen to answer and said "finding an escaped gerbil!" Apparently it took quite a few hands to catch his little furry friend! More answers followed, football, singing, orchestra, playing games etc. the more we thought about it the more we realised that there are many things which we can do by ourselves, but often they are enhanced by doing them together. In the life of the church this concept is so appropriate too. The Anglican and Methodist church signed a covenant a few years ago which used this better together term and encourages us to work together wherever we can. So it is together we seek to be Gods Church, and its always a privilege to write my thoughts in this magazine. In recognising our differences we also celebrate our unity as the body of Christ.
